This is the text from AFP
The 37-year-old has been offered a three-film deal by Bond producer Barbara Broccoli and is expected to sign up formally in the next few weeks, The Sun newspaper reported Wednesday.
Craig, a tough-looking character actor who has mixed up appearances in many art-house titles with roles in blockbusters such as "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider", just beat fellow Briton Clive Owen for the role, the report said.
Craig would be the sixth Bond in the official series of films based on the novels by Ian Fleming, following Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton and most recent incumbent Pierce Brosnan.
According to The Sun, Owen -- nominated for an Oscar this year for film "Closer" -- had told casting agents he did not want the job, although Broccoli was already favouring Craig.
While Craig remains relatively unknown outside Britain, he is well respected as an actor and also has the necessary reputation for being something of a Bond-esque ladies man, having recently dated supermodel Kate Moss.
Citing an unnamed "movie source", The Sun said that staff working at Eon Productions, which makes the Bond movies, had been told Craig would star in the next films.
"Daniel is the new 007. He is going through the deal with his lawyers. It's a big commitment for a minimum of 10 years, but he has indicated he will take the job," the source said.
Brosnan's last film as Bond was "Die Another Day" in 2002. Since then a string of possible replacements have been mooted, including Britons Jude Law and Ewan McGregor and Australian actors Hugh Jackman and Eric Bana.
Fleming's novels chronicling the adventures of the British spy codenamed 007 were first turned into a film in 1962, with "Dr No".

Although Daniel Craig is a fine actor he is not James Bond. Craig looks much older tha he is at 38 and is rather frail looking compared to the other candidates. He is very unattractive and would not appeal to the masses at all. I truly think that Daniel Craig is going to be Le Chiffre and that's why he screen tested recently. Gerard Butler would be a much better choice and far more appealing to the masses. If Craig is cast as James Bond I will never watch a James Bond film again.
That was also my theory about Craig also--that he is being tested for Le Chiffre. About his suitability to Bond i'm not sure. I'd have to get a closer look at his performances. His looks on first glance don't look promising though.

1.) He was born in London.
2.) He's younger than Brosnan.
3.) He's charming and debonair.
4.) He looks exactly like Brosnan.
5.) After listening to Fran Drescher's voice for 6 years on The Nanny, he'd be able to handle any torture scene that EON could imagine up.
Alright, so maybe not the best reasons, but I thought he would have been an obvious choice.

This one was mentioned in an article on MKKBB: Matthew Macfadyen

Been mentioned a bit before I'm pretty sure. Perhaps by fans on Bond sites.

I think he'll be a fine Bond, hasn't been known off the tv set as well, but he could pull off a 3 film Bond contract.

Now I don't know if there's anyone who's name has popped up that I'd really not want to do it. So I am just going to join the growing number of forumers who are getting tired of all this discussion of the pros, cons and possibilities, and just sit back and wait for an announcement. Whoever it is, I am sure they will be fine.

Adrian Paul, the bloke from Highlander? Can't see him as Bond at all.
Does he still have the ponytail?
No, the ponytail is gone and we're left with dark handsome looks, good acting, athletic ability that exceeds all other candidates, brooding intensity when called for, a sexual appeal and charm for the ladies, and an edgy sense of danger that spells Bond, and the entire package is wrapped in a lovely masculine presentation that doesn't look childlike or delicate.

I think the best candidate would be 35 but looks mature. And have dark hair and be about 6'2...
