But still, I felt quite moved by the ending.
Genuinely sorry to see Tennant go. If I was 9 years old I probably wouldve been in tears. I imagine there are a few kiddies round the country having to have the whole regeneration thing carefully explained to them tonight.
I hope that theres a line drawn now, and we wont see Moffat's era recycling too many of the same characters. But...

The regeneration was handled well. Very moving and atmospheric, aided by the choral chanting of The Doctor's Theme. The special effects were great and the transition to Smith was seamless. David Tennant, I salute you. The end of an era.

The whole scene just felt, wrong. I know it's a new guy, but I really didn't like the upbeat music or anything. I just didn't feel he had a good introduction.
9's first words: RUN
10's first words: Hello
11's first words.... Legs.

I really think Smith ruined the atmosphere. Don't get me wrong, the series 5 trailer looks amazing, but It was like stamping all over 10's grave.

Well, I suppose ultimately it had to end on a triumphant note of sorts. "The song ends but the story goes on..." and all that.

Yeah, I get that feeling too. Smith's scene was was pretty good. But I think they should have just shown his face and then cut away. I know it was there to get you out of that dark, sad mood - but it is a tonal change that I don't really want. Tennant's been around for a long time and I'm attached to him. I want to wallow in that feeling. I want it to simmer. I think Smith's first scene should have opened his first episode. That's how I'm feeling at the moment, anyway.I really think Smith ruined the atmosphere. Don't get me wrong, the series 5 trailer looks amazing, but It was like stamping all over 10's grave.

I'm looking forward to Series 5 a great deal. Smith is going to be fantastic.

And even though I've been watching that trailer endlessly since 3 or 4 something, it never gets any less fantastic. I swear, I'm in love with Eleven already.

Full agreement. Series 5 looks to be very high quality. It feels very slick and gleaming to me. Scary and quite dark. Bring it on.And even though I've been watching that trailer endlessly since 3 or 4 something, it never gets any less fantastic. I swear, I'm in love with Eleven already.
And I now think placing Smith's scene after the regeneration is fine. I was just in a state of mourning I think. As has been said, reason tells me "The song ends but the story goes on."

It's actually taken the whole "mourning" thing a little bit to kick in for me. I was still a bit upset but oh-so-excited when Smith popped in. It's only been the last ten or so minutes since the episode ended that my brain is finally registering a "That's it. Ten's gone." Still, quite looking forward to Series 5. And it's probably sad to say, but what honestly won me over most, even though the whole trailer was brilliant:
1. Takes a guy out with one punch
2. Smacks a Dalek with a stool or a broom or something
3. Exploding sonic screwdriver (I don't care if I already knew about that one, it's just awesome to see)
4. Firing a pistol
Not that I think Eleven will be some doom-and-gloom kick- action hero (although I wouldn't mind, honestly). But I do like the look of those moments. And, admittedly, I do sort of like the darker, more violent Doctors. Most days I prefer Nine to Ten, Seven is still my favorite...which reminds me, I was a bit hurt by that, I have to admit. The Doctor talking about his past lives and pretty much hating his Seventh form. Happens, I know, and makes sense, but still.
But I have no idea where I'm taking any of this. My brain is still processing the whole episode and the regeneration and all that, so I'm just going to keep quiet until the wheels stop turning upstairs and I can talk sense again.
And am I the only one who gets a strangely Alice in Wonderland vibe from the "What do you have for me this time?" clip.

Clearly, Tennant the actor does OR HE WOULDN'T BE LEAVING so he's taking the piss out of fans.
While on a fictional level, a major part of DW is the brilliance of regeneration and the concept that while its a different man ITS THE SAME MIND! "I don't want to go" is a callous double-hammer hit to both the legend of The Doctor that he is able to regenerate and all will, therefore, be well, and serious Who fans who follow the character. And, if you like, to human beings who, er, just die.

Could be spoilerish here so be careful...
Simm stole the show pretty much with a "masterly" understated performance - every scene he was in was quite riveting I must say.
Tennant was good but I didn't much care for his tantrum in front of Wilf and Dalton was sadly underused but did remarkably well with a static role. Didn't care for the Groundhog Day style ending though (pimping for Jack?!?), thought the freefall was b*llocks and wished Murray Gold would just shut up, took me right out of the lovely scene with Wilf and the Doctor on the Vinvocci ship - but these quibbles aside I thought it was a very fine episode of DW and gives me a lot of enthusiasm for 2010.
Very much like the look of Matt Smith's episodes - Sea Devils? Vampires in Venice? Weeping Angels and WW2 by the looks of it... Actually, does anyone else reckon the Weeping Angels might be those two Timelords of Rassilon's who covered their eyes?
Yep I do agree. Cynical definitely. Considering how metatextual DW is nowadays it is taking the p*ss somewhat and putting a very negative spin on regeneration as a whole. It did cheapen Tennant's exit a little bit... the way some people are talking about Smith stamping all over Tennant's grave by appearing at the end is more than a bit much! He's not "dead" - the Doctor has regenerated. Big difference and a crucial one.Isn't "I don't want to go" one of the most cynical things the "entertainment" industry has offered an audience?

Absolutely, tone perfect. a brilliant piece of theatrePart Two was brilliant. I know Part One was just moving things into place, but if Part One had a better plot than just moving stuff into place, it probably would've been brilliant too. Because this, really, was just wonderful. I think the weakest part of the episode was Ten going around and seeing everyone last time, although the Verity Newman and Rose trips I did like. Wilf/Donna trip was fine up until the last couple of moments. Loved the Doctor's death. Loved Smith's introduction. Brilliant send-off. So much better than I expected of Russell at this point.

Indeed, after Tennant's lip-quivering Farewell Tour, Smith's enthusiastic arrival was the perfect sobering slap in the face.
Moffatt saying enough, you drama queen.

No official word yet, so far as I am aware, but common rumor at the moment is the first episode airs in the UK on Easter, which according to Wikipedia, Easter 2010 is April 4. I imagine they'll announce a date once it starts getting closer to spring.

I’m of the mind that if it didn’t happen (or wasn’t referenced) on screen then it didn’t happen. My one exception is that I’d like to totally ignore the McGann movie. Nothing against McGann, but the McCoy Doctor had the streak of ruthlessness necessary to bring the Time War to an end. I can never imagine his girly haired replacement doing that.
The movie also fires a photon torpedo through fanboy speculation on the identity of Claire Bloom’s character.
