I'm glad Adele isn't returning, but I'll be wishing they brought her back if we end up with someone as dreary as Sam Smith.

When is it likely to be announced?

Agreed. He would be a big step back, in my opinion.

A return of Adele wouldn't be the worst thing to happen, but I can (very comfortably) live with it if she doesn't do it. Never heard anything by Sam Smith - and I don't really have the desire to. People on who's musical taste I can very much rely told me that it's not worth time and effort. Heard some stuff by Lana Del Rey, and I must say that I never understood all the fuss around this semi-talented (at best) marketing hype person. Please, No.
Agreed on Sam Smith and Lana Del Rey. The people who have told you that it's not worth the time or effort to try to get into Smith's music have done you a considerable service. He's easily the most overrated artist to come along since, well, Adele.
And your analsysis of Del Rey is spot-on. I have no idea why she keeps getting mentioned as a possibility. She has far less talent than the marketing team that's been pushing her for the past several years would like to lead you to believe.

It won't be Adele. Or Sam Smith. Or any of the list of contenders currently out there.

I know this is an old thread however, i have a friend who is working on spectre and in a meeting with Sam Mendes he expressed that he wanted Radiohead to do the theme tune. The next day i checked the odds on the bookies to find that they were really high up the list. To me this confirmed the rumour, no where on the internet or in any press have mentioned that radiohead might do the theme tune. so i think that its quite likely that it will be radiohead!!

Who did? Mendes, or this person's friend?

There's no way it's Radiohead. (And, really, the window for a Radiohead Bond song has passed.)

Sam Mendes knew who was doing the song in December 2014.
We will find out "very, very late in the day."
When the song artist is released, perhaps there'll be no surprises.

Not the first person I'd think of, but wouldn't be opposed. Chasing Yesterday was a very good album with some very grandiose songs on there. "In The Heat Of The Moment" is presently being used to advertise Assassins Creed Syndicate if anyone hasn't heard it already.

I wouldn't mind Noel Gallagher & High Flying Birds.
Please NO Lana Del Ray please.
Radiohead? I love them, but damn that would be depressing. I am hoping for something at least more upbeat than Skyfall (but knowing Mendes, I'm not holding my breath).

IF it is Radiohead, I think it will be a stunning artistic and demographic positioning coup for SPECTRE.
OK, I love Radiohead, but any basic knowledge of their work shows they are capable of writing cinematic, atmospheric, soaring anthems.
They have a new album out this year coincident with the film and a Bond theme song would be
a) entirely unexpected (of them);
b ) a huge awareness booster for their record;
c) position the film to the usual marketing demographic Lia Vollack at Sony Music tends to aim at; and
d) avoid direct comparison with Adele.
Radiohead obviously are Craig and Mendes favourites. Radiohead might be Bond fans too.
They did cover Nobody Does It Better and wrote this song - Big Boots - for The Avengers 1998 movie (Steed, not Stark) which ultimately didn't make the cut.
This is a cleaned up cover but I would not be disappointed hearing something like this over a Daniel Kleinman title sequence...

Thom Yorke is a noted Bond fan (has called Nobody Does It Better the greatest love song ever written), and Johnny Greenwood has worked on MANY film scores so I don't think either would say no if offered a chance to do a Bond film with Daniel Craig and Sam Mendes (not to mention the highly acclaimed Thomas Newman)

The Sunday Times claims that it will be Sam Smith according to their "senior music industry source".

Ellie Goulding? That's even worse.

Could just be the usual misdirection. When it comes to these types of things, you can't really believe a word out of anybody's mouth until the song and/or film actually makes its debut.
Hopefully this is true, however, at least in terms of Smith not getting the gig.

Indeed.
So too did Chris Evans rule himself firmly out of the running for presenting the success that is Top Gear...
And the new presenter is... Chris Evans.

Unless he's doing the in-thing of lying about involvement in a project, I'm happy he's not involved. Never liked his one-trick pony singing style and would hate to hear him warble over a Bond theme he would make sound more dreary that it deserved.

Unfortunately, Sam Smith saying he's not doing the Bond theme does nothing to convince me that Sam Smith really isn't doing the Bond theme.
Doesn't convince me at all either.
Unfortunately, it makes me think that it's more likely he's the one. Seems odd that he would throw out the name of another artist, since I can't imagine that that's information that he would have. If it was Goulding, surely they would tell her what they've always told talent that they've secured before an official announcement, that they aren't supposed to say anything to anyone.

I'm not convinced too.
I saw the actual interview on a video on the Capital FM website. He seemed quite coy as he said all this.
What was he supposed to say if asked directly but had been told to say nothing until an official announcement?
The video has since been removed - Interestingly.
Personally I would rather someone else.
