Seeing how SPECTRE's taking shape, I think the only appropriate candidate right now is Lana Del Ray. She has vulnerability, a strong sexuality, and a bite that's been missing in Bond theme songs since 2002.

It's the same lyrics and all of that, but the version he released as a single is not the one heard in the film. I haven't listened to either in a long while, so I can't speak to the absolute specifics of how they're different, but from what I remember, the single version seemed to have a slightly faster pace to it and relied more on the guitar as its primary instrument. The version in the film indulges in the kinds of flourishes that we associate with what makes something sound "Bondian".
There you go then. Never really noticed, but then I just didn't like the song at all. If there were just subtle changes between the two versions I'd still wouldn't like the single release either.
One of my candidates for SPECTRE is Paloma Faith.

Lyrically, I like the song, so I find the single version to be a good listen. It's undeniably a superior version. The version from the film is a mess. The "Bondian" flourishes don't work with the song, it's a bit slower, and there's this awfully annoying scratching noise (for want of a better term) that should have been cleaned up in post-production.
This was the first demonstration that EON wasn't fully committed to the reboot. They had a superior version of the song sitting on the shelf, but went with an inferior version because it sounded more like what had come before.

According to music-news.com/William Hill, the current odds are:-
• 2/5 Sam Smith
• 7/1 Adele
• 8/1 Ed Sheeran
• 10/1 Lana del Rey
• 10/1 Lorde
• 25/1 Noel Gallagher
• 33/1 Coldplay
• 33/1 Ellie Goulding
• 40/1 One Direction
• 50/1 Tom Jones
Others on request
Outside of Tom Jones, I would hope EON would be able to secure a better performer than what's represented on this list.

You're making me want to listen to the bloody song now!

Can't say I've compared the two versions, or that there was even a difference. The song on his album is not the same as heard in the movie?
One is more rock based the other is more orchestral with more than one instrument.
Wouldn't say it's 'slower' or 'inferior'. Both versions are equally good.

I'm not too fond about her lyrics, but she does have a fantastic voice. I'd pick her any day over Sam Smith and a returning Adele.

Agreed, yes. But she's almost too obvious a choice, her name gets brought up for three years now. And will doubtlessly be suggested time and again in the future. I'm afraid she might end up as the Alison Goldfrapp of her generation, an excellent singer who never got to do the title song. I'd like to be surprised by the final choice for the song. But Del Rey I'd take on any day over most other names. Provided, as you said, that she's got the right producer and/or songwriter.A decent choice, provided she has some strong collaborators.Seeing how SPECTRE's taking shape, I think the only appropriate candidate right now is Lana Del Ray. The only thing I've heard Sam Smith do is mope and whine in his songs with no range, not like Adele who did a whole range of vocal and emotional range in her song. Smith just comes across that same-old monotonous style I loathe, so if he is doing the title theme then I KNOW we are in for a slow, dreary song as that's all he can do.

Which is why I don't want him. I'd be perfectly fine with Lana Del Rey since I think she's a got a great voice and vocal range and much more talented than Smith. It's just her lyrics I don't care for, but I'm probably (actually definitely) not her target audience.
I wouldn't want Adele back either. Sure Skyfall has grown on me as a song, I'd like a change of pace and allow someone else (LDR) to give their imput rather than a returning artist. Especially if we're in for another slow type of song.

Agreed.
Hopefully EON will look outside of the trio of Adele, Sam Smith, and Lana del Rey because they can surely find better and more exciting choices outside of those three.

Yep, bring Sir. Paul back. We need it, Bond needs it, heck, even Paul needs it (not in a monetary kind of way, of course).

She seems the only one that makes sense on that list to me.

Check out Latch or La La La. They might not be your thing, but they're less mopey than In the Lonely Hour.

What's wrong with Lizzy Grant?

I'd probably wouldn't mind Lana Del Ray, to be honest. Especially after hearing Big Eyes and her rendition of Once Upon A Dream. If not her then I'd suggest Jennifer Hudson or just bite the bullet and do an instrumental theme short attention spans be damned.
If they hadn't left this plain so soon when they did, Amy Winehouse or Freddy Mercury would be top notch candidates

Recall that Amy Winehouse did record a demo for Quantum of Solace, but was dropped because of her substance abuse issues.

I'd be curious to hear it. It can't be as bad as Bono's "GoldenEye".
