Sometimes they are better. TND comes to mind.
Bassey would be a cool choice since the film is sort of evoking a retro theme for the series. You can't deny that the lady has still got it.
She sure does.

It would be nice to get an end credits song as opposed to the Bond theme yet again. One would think that Sony would be on board with doing that, as it would give them a chance to get a second single out into rotation.

Licence to Kill too. "If You Asked Me Too" is far superior to Gladys Knights' song.

I'd agree that "If You Asked Me To" is the superior song. But, I do think that the version of "Licence to Kill" that's in the actual film, which begins about midway through the actual song and drops the extra backup singers that makes Knight sound like she's saying "Licence to Kilt", is actually pretty good and a solid title song for the film.
I used to advocate for the fact that "If You Asked Me To" would have been a better title track for Licence to Kill, but the more I think about it, I think it's perfectly placed where it was. Regardless of the way the final scene began, with a tone deaf phone call between Bond and Felix, the ending with Bond jumping into the pool to stop Pam from leaving and then fading off into "If You Asked Me To" is a darn near perfect way to end Licence to Kill.

The same feelings I have for "Surrender." While it's clearly superior to Sheryl Crow's "Tomorrow Never Dies," I think "Surrender" works perfectly over the end credits.

I'm a fan of both songs and I agree with you about the end of LTK.
I actually prefer the full version of Licence to Kill by Gladys Knight.

My favorite end credit song is and probably always will be, "If There Was A Man." The last piece of John Barry music ever heard in a Bond film.
"Surrender" works at the end, but I really really wish it was the main theme.

Oh yeah, I love "If there was a man".
I love the music as it fades away too.

I've said this before, I know I'm probably the only one, but I'd love to see and hear James Blunt singing the title song.
Or Justin Timberlake

I must be the only person who prefers the Sheryl Crow song to the k.d. lang song.
Crow, points in favor:
- orchestrations
- slinky guitar lick
- opening musical hook
- melody in the chorus with the high note peak on the first downbeat
Points against:
- Crow's husky vocal still sits a bit odd with Bond
- bland lyrics
Lang, points in favor:
- opening musical hook, which also made for great incidental music in the film
- Lang's vocal: full, rich, and powerful; a good fit
- classic sounding orchestrations, esp. the "dirty" brass on the opening hook
- lyrics fit the movie
Points against:
- lyrics are a bit "on the nose" -- "write me Bond lyrics centering on news... and GO!"
- not musically innovative at all; sounds like it's imitating "Goldfinger" & "Thunderball" without being particularly memorable in itself
I think TWINE's theme sounded like it was cut out of the same mold as "Surrender" with a borrowed bit from "TND" and came out even less inspired. Arnold was so inside the box that he was beginning to imitate himself, and didn't get out of it until "You Know My Name".

Re TND: I like Sheryl's better as a song, but prefer k.d. lang's as a Bond song.

I prefer "Surrender" like most people. It sounds more Bondian and is much more bombastic. That said, I still feel it works better as an END credits song than an opening credits one. Also, "The World Is Not Enough", while not one of my preferred films, is one of my favorite songs. Shirley Manson sounds right at home singing a Bond theme. However, it´s another one that feels like it would work better over the end credits. As it stands, TWINE´s end credits music is probably my least favorite of the whole series, except for maybe Die Another Day´s horrible techno version of it´s already abysmal theme song. I´ve never enjoyed that particular remixing of the Bond theme.

I'm not going to be surprised if they don't use SPECTRE as the sole title. I'm thinking it could be another 'You Know My Name', 'Another Way to Die' scenario.

or maybe OHMSS style with no singing at all

I'm hoping Thomas Newman can incorporate more of the title song into his score this time. It wasn't a mark down on his Skyfall effort - which is actually very close to being my favourite Bond score overall, but it's always a nice bonus touch.

I'd love that as OHMSS is my favorite title song. But it won't happen.

I imagine the word "spectre" will be used in a verse, the same way that the line "the spy who loved me" features in Nobody Does it Better, and "solace" features in the one of the verses of Another Way to Die.

Still ... "Spectre" isn't the hardest title to write a song for. It's not like it's "Thunderball" ...

And here are the lyrics to the chorus:
You´re a spectre
My little inspector
don´t steal my lector
or I´ll be a defector
just don´t call me Hector
only calculate a vector...
Sorry, I obviously had too much gluehwein.

SPECTRE
by
JCRendle
Like a whisper in the wind
Like a shadow in the dark
Like a needle in the straw
They'll watch you like a Shark
They are an illusion
You will not know they're there
They will cause great confusion
before vanishing into thin air
SPECTRE are the key to every great crime
They've been in the shadows
Since the beginning of time.
A ghost, a goul, a spirit, a dream.
You better worry if you're part of the scheme
Like a whisper in the wind
Like a shadow in the dark
Like a needle in the straw
They'll watch you like a Shark

They could always channel Aretha Franklin's 'Respect', and spell out 'Spectre' if they're stuck for ideas.
Was Aretha Franklin ever considered to sing a Bond theme?

With the focus on marketing the Bond theme as a single and using current popular singers, I think the days of an instrumental Bond theme are over, permanently, unless instrumental tracks start getting massive radio play and mp3 download popularity.

My Mum text me this morning at 1:03am to say:
"Did you know Caro (Emerald) is doing the theme for Spectre? X"
I've asked where this random text came from. Can't find anything myself.
For those not aware, this is Caro, a Dutch pop/jazz singer:
