I was hoping for a stand-alone sequel to "Man of Steel", too. Then I warmed to the idea of getting a new (and older) Batman in the mix. To have him in first place (since he is the more consistent earner) makes sense but changes the dynamic of the film, of course. Still, I don´t think they will shortchange Superman in this. The "vs."-idea, well, that was already happening in the comics, and it does not leave any suspense - so why are they doing it? Maybe they really have thought out an interesting story here? Hope so.
When I read the new title, at first, I thought it would only be "Dawn of Justice". Which would have been fine with me. To attach it to "Batman vs. Superman" is, well, a bit unnecessary for my taste. But WB definitely wants to push the upcoming Justice League movie, therefore it shoves so many of its members in this film. Good move? Ask Sony...
Let me be honest here: I love the Superman character. For me, he will always be my first and favorite comic book hero. Batman is a close second. To get them both in a film, well, it still excites me. And I came to appreciate Zack Snyder´s "Man of Steel" on a second viewing much more. I actually love that film now. So I believe he can pull this off.
But to force this film to be a springboard for the "Justice League" movie remains dangerous. Obviously, they will try to set up a situation in which the human being (Batman) considers the alien (Superman) a threat - and vice versa. But then a situation will arise in which both realize that they have to combine forces because they want the same thing: save human kind. Also, Batman will find out that Superman is not the only alien on earth (or the only one with supernatural powers). That´s where all the other members of the future Justice League will come in. Together they will fight an extraterrestrial villain (who might join forces with Lex Luthor), and at the end of the movie they will get ready for a much bigger attack in the next film.
Whoops. My blabberings seem to have uncovered a very predictable plot, something that "The Avengers" already have done (and will be doing again)...
