I am surprised that the DVD/Blu-ray is being announced and advertised already. This could easily kill any box office momentum the film had. I realise it is coming to end of its cinema release in most markets, but let it end naturally and not because people will just wait a few weeks for the home entertainment release. That billion dollar target will be further away now ( & I'm still hoping it makes £100million in the UK).
I'm not so sure about that. The DVD/Blu-ray release date was announced a week or so after the North American release (check the date at the beginning of the thread). It didn't hurt box office then so I don't think it will now. Anybody who has the "I'll wait for the DVD" mentality has likely had that since the beginning. Just my two cents. I do agree that it was surprising that it was announced so soon, but that seems to be how it goes nowadays. I nearly missed the release of The Expendables 2 on Blu-ray because I wasn't expecting it out so soon after it left theaters.
Theoretically, if Skyfall stopped making money in all existing markets right now (at $974 million worldwide), China would only have to give it $26 million to hit the magic $1 billion mark. For reference, Quantum of Solace doubled Casino Royale's business in China (Casino did around $11 million whereas Quantum did around $22 million). This year, The Dark Knight Rises made around $52 million in China.
All I'm saying is you shouldn't worry about it missing the billion mark, it'll be there in no time.
