Gerard Butler is also one of my new top prospects along with James Purefoy.

I don't think Gerard Butler would work. Like Eric Bana, he's too much like Russell Crowe. He has a thick, meaty face and no hardness. I suppose he could manage in the role, but it would be a stretch. He has no edge.

Purefoy is no better. He has an edge, but he also has bad hair and a dull, unattractive face.

I would prefer Ioan Gruffudd to either of them (and I can tell you he's not my first choice either).

The Bond prospects are looking increasingly boring. Jackman and Owen seem to have fallen out of vogue, although I don't think Owen is really out. I just hope we don't get stuck with Dougray Scott.

I agree that Eric Bana and Russel Crowe do not look Bondian at all, but Gerard Butler does. We're used to seeing him in a rough and tumble look but if you see him in the tux, he looks the part. He has tons of charisma too that would ooze on screen.

As far as Owen, it's over. His schedule is piling up as he is a hot ticket thanks to the oscar nomination which gives him what he wants, diversity. Jackman is an Aussie so forget him period. If it's not Butler then I hope Bale bails on Batman sequels otherwise Gruffudd is third. Again, I wouldn't be surprised at all if it was nobody mentioned to date.

Only two actors in the last 2 weeks have mentioned publicly that they screen tested for 007, Dominic West and Julian McMahon. Mcmhahon recently stated it was betwen him and another actor (West I would assume). Lets all hope it's McMahon and not West. West is just so harsh looking I cannot understand his appeal to EON.

Yesh, I forgot he was an Aussie. I still like McMahon because he's not overexposed like Jackman. My Aussie comment was more directed to EON's reluctance to cast an Aussie Bond after Lazenby.

If CR isn't released until late 2006 then we will not hear about Bond until late 05 or early 06. That sucks.

Julian McMahon is one of my top choices. Definitely better than Dominic West, who looks like a drunk male model.

Quite so, though up until recently (when I first saw his name on here) I thought he was an American. That kind of detracts from his potential in my mind, but he doesn't look that bad really. I'd prefer neither him nor West...

Crowe looks quite Bondian in a scene from PROOF OF LIFE when he's on the river boat during a company party wearing a tux. But 2 minutes does not make a Bond candidate, I know.

He wears a suit not a tux as I recall (not that it matters) but crowe would've been good a couple of years ago..I think he's to old now...

Russell Crowe would have been a decent Bond years ago but is too chubby now. He struggles with his weight too much to be Bond.

As for McMahon vs. West, I quite agree that neither would be best. If it had to be one of them, then I would prefer McMahon. That's what I was saying.

I think McMahon would be OK, but he just doesn't look tough enough. I'd like to see Connery's Bond again. He was tough and had a strong physical presence, and was very believable in a fist fight. Jackman has that quality too. McMahon is more of a pretty boy.
He would be much better than West though. But who wouldn't ? :)

I agree that McMahon is more pretty but he, like Connery was a body builder and personal trainer at one point in his career. I saw some pics of him in an Austrailian film running on the beach and he was much more muscular than the other candidates. His face is a little boyish but he would age well into the role.

I know I sound like I'm endorsing him, but I'm not. I still think there are better choices out there, but he would be the worst choice either.

I agree with that! He's far from being the worst choice, actually he's just the worst among the choices I would accept, which is not that bad :)

i think McMahon is a kinda in the middle choice.
He's (almost) nobody's favourite choice but everyone thinks he could maybe be ok. Personally I (still) don't think he's a real serious candidate, but his name does keep coming up.

I gotta say, at this point I'm thinking one of two things: either EON has really blown it by losing Owen, Jackman, et al. and everyone here is simply trying to make the best of it they can ("He wouldn't be that bad..." "He`s not the worst they could do"), in which case this forum is incredibly depressing because we've all decided to settlefor someone OR we are not giving EON enough credit and they have someone great and unknown lined up that is going to blow us away. This is a company that has nearly everything riding on this francise, and aside from the odd mistep here or there (A View to a Kill anyone?) do seem to be geniunely concerned about this character, beyond the dollar and cents aspect. I for one am going to keep hoping for the best!

I dont want any of the actors mentioned to date ( Clive Owen seems i suspose) if we are looking for a youngish bond. The problem is i don't know that many young actors these i guess its my age showing !

I created this little photo collage so folks can look at all the real Bond candidates next to each other. Forgive me for the picture of Greard Bulter in that awful hair style but it showed his face the best.

Top : Bale,Bana,Bloom,Butler,Craig,Crowe,Davenport,Farrell,Gruffudd,Jackman

Bottom : Law,Ledger,McGregor,McMahon,Northam,Owen, Paul,Purefoy,Scott,West

True, but you're probably right anyway. There's not much I DO remember about that flick.

It looks like he's trimmed down for THE CINDRELLA MAN. At least he looks it in the face from the advance trailer I saw the other day.

Thanks for the collage, it really puts some things into perspective! Based on a comparsion of the photos it is easy to see why Owen si leading the race, but there is definitely potential in McMahon, Craig (I gotta say it), Butler (although I do have to ask about choosing a photo with that hair!?!)and Paul (still think he is too old, and he will always be the Highlander with that ponytail in my eyes). Let's be honest: Law, Ledger and Bloom look like they could star in Silverfin, but they are not old enough to be Bond. Jackman looks good, but I am sure he is too well known and committed to to many other franchises, as is Bale, plus I just think he is too serious. As for the rest, there is just something missing. Grufford and McGregor: too skinny; Crowe, Bana and West: not smooth enough. There are two on there that I don't know: top, fourth from the right and bottom second from right. I recognize the actor that is bottom fifth from the left, but can't place his name.

Thanks for the kind words about the collage. I know the Gerard Butler hair is bad, really bad in that picture, but it was the best one showing his face I could find. I left off Robbie Williams, Hugh Grant and Rikki Lee Travolta because they are not real candidates by any stretch of the imagination. I may follow up with a better on tomorrow.

Davenport does look like Byrne a little I agree. He doesn't have the Bond look though in my opnion, although I like him a lot in every film I've seen him in. He's the one endorsed by John Cleese and is some relative of his I believe I read.

Russell Crowe, like Clive Owen, has no interest in the Bond role whatsoever. A few year back he probably would have made a decent Bond, but he is hell to work with and EON does not want to repeat Connery's nightmares.

I know I've written this somewhere else (just can't remeber where!), but does anyone else think that Owen's reluctance to take on Bond in Casino Royale has anything to do with the fact that he has already basically played the part in Croupier and "The Hire" shorts? As a character he may just not hold that much interest to Owen.

Cillian Murphy.

I'm beginning to feel a little mixed about Clive Owen. Leaning over to the Hugh Jackman side, but not by much. Both could pull it off, but I like Clive Owen as an actor better than Hugh Jackman.
