I am surprised to find Dr. No with such a low following; honestly it hovers in my top two - it vies for top honors with From Russia With Love. Interesting.
Me too! Dr No is also in my top two - i can't decide between it and Thunderball.
I am currently re-visiting the Connery films and Dr No still stands up very very well. I primarily like it because it is faithful to the Fleming novel, has wonderful Jamaican locations, beautiful ladies (Ms Taro my fave), a great villain, and great support from Quarrel (always liked him in the novels) and Jack Lord as Leiter.
However Thunderball has Domino (my fave Bond girl), Adolfo Celli, great locations and diving scenes (I'm an amateur diver).
FRWL has also stood up well (3rd) but Goldfinger has gone down my rankings.

*** Is it a lot slower than we remember?
*** Is it because our hero doesn't really get to do much for long stretches of the movie?
*** Is it a natural contrarian feeling because people who don't know/don't care about Bond movies think it's wonderful?
BTW, my favorite Sean Connery Bond film is FRWL; my favorite Connery Bond performance is in Thunderball.

I'm curious: what is it about Goldfinger people dislike the most?

Bond: Shocking...
And:
Bond: Do you expect me to talk?
Goldfinger: No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die!
I actually enjoyed Oddjob more than Goldfinger. He made me laugh...

I'm now convinced that DR. NO features the finest Connery performance and is the best Bond film he ever did. Not only that, but I also now feel that DR. NO is the best Bond movie, bar none. But it's always an uphill struggle trying to convince others of that, since many fans are unsurprisingly unwilling to admit that it was essentially all downhill for the series after the first film!
However, I certainly won't budge on Connery's performance in DR. NO. Watch the film and you'll find it's all there, everything you could possibly want from an actor playing Bond on the big screen. No one has even come close to Connery in 1962, and no one ever will. Sure, Connery isn't terrific only in DR. NO, but even in a film as early in the series as GOLDFINGER there are signs of his growing boredom with the role.
Yes, yes, yes excellent post Loomis. You're spot on with Connery's performance in Dr No, he gave it his all.

Ditto. I would have expected it to be above Diamonds Are Forever and more on par with You Only Live Twice.

A great way to start off the series, Connery was at his best and the movie was extremely faithful to the book(Except for the Giant Octopus ), which was great too.
~Honorable Mentions~
- Thunderball
- You Only Live Twice

Interesting is, that when I first thought about such a question, my top choices were DN,FRWL and TB. By that time, I didn' t know they were the Terence Young ones. So, I 'd say, my votes go for Terence Young. If only he was around...

My vote went to Dr No as TB already had significant support, whilst Dr No languished in bottom place which it definately didn't deserve.

That puts you in the 1.2% who have voted for that movie, Darren.Never Say Never Again - far better than anything EON have ever put out.
Yep. Proud of it.
If you ever get back to this thread, I'd love for you to qualify your statement. I think it's an ok movie, but nowhere near EON's films.

Amazing that Golfinger isn't leading this poll. Aren't we conditioned to think it's best?
That always seems to be the general consensus, but there are some threads on CBn where it shows alot of members' love for others such as From Russia With Love and Thunderball.
I'm one of the Thunderball over Goldfinger fans.

Great title song, Sean at his best, a fantastic villain in Gert Frobe, a timeless henchman in Oddjob, a classic Bond girl in Pussy Galore, and a wonderfully enjoyable plot and storyline all-around.
