I can't help wondering if the reason the gunbarrel has been modified (CR) or moved to the back of the film (QoS, SF) is to distinguish the Craig era from what went before. Note that this started with one director, Martin Campbell, continued with Marc Forster and then with Sam Mendes.

We here on Cbn have sometimes talked about the Craig Bond films as a distinct new series of Bonds, inspite of the knowing references to the previous movies, most notably the inclusion of the Aston Martin DB5.

It might be for aesthetic reasons, as Sam Mendes suggested, that SF continued the gunbarrel at the back trend - or it might be a less than subtle hint that the films are not "just another predictable Bond".

For myself, I've posted before that I'd like to see the gunbarrel back where it used to be - but given the striking imagery which we know will be used in the PTC scene in Mexico City, I wouldn't be at all surprised if some other way of opening the new movie is used and the gunbarrel/James Bond theme combination is once more relegated to the end of the film.

Please no.

We've already heard it reported that the standard opening is being re-established, and I for one hope that this is true.

I want to come out of SPECTRE saying "This is the one I've been waiting for since the reboot!"

I'd certainly like the gunbarrel back where it belongs. CR was an understandable "one off" which I thought worked quite well. I couldn't understand why QoS started as it did, unless it was the direct sequel aspect. Nor could I understand why SF started without it. Unless both directors didn't want to be tied to a traditional formula Bond - QoS the one with the opener over that lake, SF with the out of focus stuff.

I'll be happy if we get the Monty Norman theme opening SPECTRE, the gunbarrel, and some bizarre image framed in the circle, opening up to show the Day of the Dead.

I'd love to see Craig wearing the white dinner jacket for the SPECTRE gunbarrel sequence.

I'm afraid I don't get the wave of enthusiasm for the white dinner jacket. It will work well in one scene which we've all seen in the trailers, as an homage to a certain Bond film, but I don't think it would work in the gunbarrel scene, not imho. In fact I'm sure in the early gunbarrels Bond was depicted wearing suit, collar, tie - not bow tie, and hat, rather than a tuxedo.

I'm fairly certain the gunbarrel will be back at the start of the film (for the first time in the Craig era).

We haven't had a proper traditional gunbarrel in sixteen(!) years. Not since TWINE. I want to see one at the beginning, with the classic James Bond theme, classic Binder gunbarrel design, and no CGI bullet.

I am hoping beyond all hope for the gunbarrel to return to the start. For no other reason than "Peace in our time" here on the boards........    :)

Wow...good point, Gobi. For 16 years we've not had a proper gun-barrel, as it should be with no tweaks. Man that's a long time to be without something I consider as iconic to the series as anything else.

It's at the beginning, I believe. Can't guarantee it won't be tweaked though. I wouldn't mind the white dinner jacket....

The white dinner jack would be nice but might blend in with the white background.

I am hoping for a black tux this time, though I did like the grey suit in Skyfall.

I think/hope it will be a suit rather than a dinner jacket.

I hope it is either the suit or black tuxedo. The white DJ wouldn't work for the gunbarrel, imho, although I've already stated it will work within a certain scene in the new film.

If Bond appears in the gunbarrel wearing the white jacket it will put me in mind of the following. I read a biography of a (then) reasonably famous UK politician a few years back. There's a chapter where he turns up at a function wearing a medium to light blue DJ and his boss, the PM, cut him down to size with a remark along the lines of "Ah, Reggie, turned up in your dance band jacket have you?"

This music is pretty cool. Sounds a bit gunbarrelish, if you discount that bloody sting at the end!

Mendes mentioned the gunbarrel in his Empire interview. It's one of the last things they shot. Four different sequences for Craig then.

Hopefully it looks nothing like Skyfall gunbarrel. Too shiny and smooth for me. Didn't particularly care for the colors either.

Oops! You're right antovolk - got that evident punch to it. Sounded a little similar for a moment, like something from the '007 Legends' game.

And I agree Ace - that gunbarrel design awful. Back to basics...or at least something recognisable as a Bond gunbarrel...this time hopefully.

Best one I've see for DC (fan-made) to encompass a classic look and brilliant music is this:

Of the Craig gunbarrels, I'm fondest of the QOS design and pose.

I'll be interested to see what it looks like this time.

If it's at the start - I wonder what sort of gunbarrel cue they'll go for - the sting at the start with the dots or have the ending sting after the gunshot, when the blood is coming down...

5 if you include the alternate Quantum of Solace version.

Did Mendes say much about it?

I'm confident that it will be at the start this time. (Been saying this for 7 years now.)
