I guess that's fair, especially as there weren't 10th, 20th or 30th anniversary films. I just think that they tend to get silly after awhile and there is absolutely no reason that the 22nd Bond film needed to be so self-referential.

Agreed.  The anniversary films don't need to be either, since they'll be arriving with more frequency given that EON is taking more and more time between films now.

With this set well under way with construction and talk of needing people for the end of November/ beginning of December, perhaps Eon are going to do the start of shoot press conference on location.
Back in the day, that's how they did the press launch for films like FYEO, AVTAK and TLD. With the worlds media gathering in Corfu, Chateau Chantilly and Vienna, respectively.
I think it might be a possibility. With Mendes's approach of not wanting to talk too much about the film's content, it might go some way to keeping the journalist more occupied and give them lots to write about other than loads of 'no comment'.

That would be a very sensible move. Still not that much more revealing, but at least coming from a place a lot closer to the action. Also the press can already get some whiff of the atmosphere, something that would normally only come later.

I think a few interesting things have come to light here.

They need extra people from late November until February. (with some people needed from early November, according to an e-mail circulated in the area)

Baz at the Mail said on the 9th October that filming starts in 6 weeks, that takes us to around 21st of November. That's two weeks earlier than his earlier 6th of December start. Has production been brought forward or has he just got the maths wrong?

A 21st November start of shoot fits well with them needing lots of extra people on location come the end of November.

Either way, it looks as if there is a lot to be done in Austria.

November and Feb?? Ahh!! So its possible filming could have been bumped up a wee bit?? Or maybe its just some 2nd Unit stuff that will be filmed before the official Dec. 6th start date... Exciting nonetheless!

Guys, for the sake of clarity: my German is a bit rusty, but my understanding is that they are looking for workers to do actual work on the set / with the production, not extras for shooting. Maybe a better germanist could confirm?

Oh, and because first-hand information is always better, I've found the original advert, see for yourselves:

They're looking for workers, not henchmen.

"Für Bond-Abenteuer in Obertilliach werden 150 Helfer gesucht. "
Helfer means "helpers".

"
Gesucht werden unter anderem Bergretter, Pistenraupenfahrer und Handwerker."
They're looking for mountain rescuers, people who can drive a snow groomer and manual workers.

That's correct, they look for skilled labour with a skiing/mountaineering background. Frankly, it would be a bit odd to look for 'henchmen' in an add in an Austrian - or German - newspaper...

So the workforce is most likely involved in preparing slopes and sets, transporting people and material from A to B and other such jobs. But I think it's not out of the question part of them might actually end up as extras for scenes where they need to live up the background or want to avoid the impression the location has been fenced off.

The local TV reported on 007 in Obertilliach:

http://tvthek.orf.at...illiach/8598762

As far as I can grasp, nothing new except that everything is kept very secret.

One interesting thing though: on the footage, one can see that the house they are building is actually very, very close to real houses - something that is much less evident on the set pics. I don't think they can possibly crash an aircraft in this house, or even blow up the house itself, without creating mayhem in the real houses around. Since there's plenty of space available around, it seems strange. I wonder what are the real plans for this house.

Some more details:

  • The Altauseer Lake is also being considered as a shooting location (http://de.wikipedia....Altausseer_See)
  • The production decided 3 weeks ago not to shoot at the Dachstein for logistical reasons
  • A 25 day shot is planned, with most of it to take place in Obertilliach
  • A helicopter landing and the blowing up of a ski lift are planned

Nice details there.

Can imagine a scenario with the ski lift exploding just as someone jumps to safety.

My personal theory is that might be loosely inspired by Ian Fleming's Octopussy - Major Dexter Smythe on the hunt for a cache of Nazi gold, and killing mountain guide/ski instructor Hans Oberhauser.

Same rumour, with an added detail: it would allegedly be capital for filming that the lake would not be frozen over.

Boat chase in view?

I've also seen contradictory reports that say the do what the lake frozen. There is even talk of them building an ice rink there.

One of the most interesting things that has come out in the last few days is that there is a plan to film at Altaussee from 6th January.

Putting this together with other information, that they will be in Obertilliach until early February - that's a decent amount of time in Austria.

And from what I can tell, that's the first unit.

Is it possible that the villain's lair is in fact in Austria?

Definitely possible, given how little we know.

From Twitter. I think the photo was taken at Altaussee.

I suspect that this is part of why Eon has said that they don't want the lake to freeze.

Guess this also buries the Norway rumors once and for all. The boat on the picture seems to be a Plätte boat, traditionally found in the Alps/ the Danube region.
