And my gut says Tennant was topped before Tennant even came into the role.
For me, Tennant's Doctor is topped by no-one save for Pertwee's (certainly not the overrated Tom Baker's). And, even then, it's a close-run thing.

Eh, all a matter of personal taste. As I've noted numerous times in this thread, the Seventh Doctor is my favorite, and I think easily the best portrayal of the lot. I think both McGann and Tennant had the potential to topple him, but McGann was never given a fair shot (audio drama are not quite up to the caliber of television, even if the series is very good) and Tennant...well I've already gone over Tennant somewhere a page or two back.

Agreed. It is all a matter of taste. For the record, I don't think McCoy is anything like as bad as his reputation suggests but, for me, his stories were atrocious; not so much scraping the barrel as burrowing deep beneath it and it was right and proper that the series was cancelled when it was. But, granted, McCoy stood out like a sunflower on a dungheap.

Oh yes, a lot of McCoy's stories were crap, especially during the cream jacket days, but there are still some delightful gems to be found in that era, most of them coming from the brown jacket days. Personally Survival is my favorite of the McCoy era, and I think Ghost Light is brilliant (much as it gets ragged on) and Curse of Fenric is probably the only McCoy story that really gets the love it deserves. But as you noted with the last sentence, even in horrible episodes like Time and the Rani, McCoy himself was always good. And another boosting factor of the McCoy era for me is the Doctor-Ace relationship. The chemistry between the actors was just right and the writing was, I think, one of the best of a relationship between Doctor and companion. With a lot of the other companions, to me at least, they feel like just that, a companion. Ace was one of the few where it really felt like they were friends, traveling time and space because they love it. And I'm going to stop myself here before I start gushing.
Personally one of my favorite moments from the McCoy comes at the end of this clip, after the Doctor is warped back to Perivale, just that brief moment with the girl. Of course the "If we fight like animals, we'll die like animals!" is brilliant too.

It's amazing, but McCoy's performance from 1:16 on actually reminds me a lot of Tennant, especially his reaction to the Master's death at the end of Last of the Time Lords.Personally one of my favorite moments from the McCoy comes at the end of this clip, after the Doctor is warped back to Perivale, just that brief moment with the girl. Nice ones. There have been a couple of tantalising shots of the new TARDIS interior in these shots, but we still don't have the full picture. Looks BIG though.
There may be more. I hadn't been on the blog in a while and was about to leave. Only had time to relay the first post. And looking through the older posts there are some videos. Afraid that's all from that source, in the way of New Who spoilers. If you go back manually in the PB, there's photos of a night shoot at the same location that look rather lovely, and alun.vega probably has updated their flickr. New interior though, as the Ninth Doctor would say, fantastic!

I think it's fine. It looks pretty much the same, but not as 'coral', and more 'metal' - just like the new logo.

Intriguing. I hope that's true as that was my instinct for what would happen when I saw the announcement interview with Matt Smith on DOCTOR WHO CONFIDENTIAL. We might truly be in for the best, most epic WHO since the 1970's.Over the weekend I was told from a fairly good source that word from the DOCTOR WHO set is that Matt Smith is hot amazing in the role and could well upstage Mr Tennent quite quickly.
Can't say more (well, I could).

I'm pretty keen to get into Doctor Who. Where on earth do I start?!
I suppose Rose which kicks off the Eccleston series is as good as any other. If you're in the UK just wait for the BBC repeat! Otherwise it's not really too continuity heavy: just dip in at any point.

Thanks a bunch for the tips, guys. If it is that easy to get into, I might try to get my hands on the Timothy Dalton episode when it comes out. Maybe the new actor's (Matt Whatshisname) first episodes will be a good place to start too.

I would suggest starting with Rose. Classic series doesn't have a lot of terrific jumping in points, and An Unearthly Child (first story) is entertaining but slow. Rose does a good job of introducing one to Dr Who without being too "this is what happens on our show". Rose really is the ideal place to start I think, even if it isn't, imo, the best episode of the new series.

To be honest I think the Dalton ones might be a little more continuity-heavy than usual: they're the last ones for Tennant as the Doctor so I'll expect there'll be a bit of an 'end of era' feel about them with lots of characters returning etc. The new Matt Smith series will be a great place to start, though: they're even calling it 'Series One'!
Generally, as long as you're not watching a season finale, you're okay to hop on anywhere. All you have to know is that he's an alien who travels through time and space in a phone box that's bigger on the inside! That's it really!
I thought today's Sarah Jane was great fun: I can't believe they haven't had K9 in it before- he was great in this! Nigel Havers was a little underused but hopefully he'll get more to do tomorrow.

Lovely interview as well, Tennant confirms that the Christmas Special is the "biggest they've ever done" and that "Everyone on set was crying"
