I reckon this choice has been made by EON for name value only, not his direct talent and range in singing.
Well of course, and it's the reason why Adele was chosen. There were far more talented and versatile singers back in 2012, but like Smith her album had topped the charts and she had crossover appeal.
From a technical standpoint, Smith is a better singer than Adele and he's demonstrated more range and control between registers. This is no surprise when you consider his years of formal training and experience as a choirboy.

I don't think he's got much range, and not much....power. I dunno, I can't imagine him doing ANYTHING like Skyfall. I could be wrong of course, so prove me wrong indeed Mr Smith.
And the trailer is very effective with the song indeed!

Having said that I think the two official trailers we've had for the new movie are also very good, imho.

The second trailer for 'SPECTRE' really builds up fantastically IMO.
But going back to topic a little, I will welcome anything from 'WOTW' in the final trailer, just to 'seal the deal'. Here's hoping.

Sam Smith apparently said in an interview earlier in the year that 'Another Way to Die' was his favourite Bond theme. Although maybe that was part of the big lie too...How so? Sam Smith is not Jack White or Alicia Keys struggling to sing in unison."The highest song ever"?
Doesn't bode well, I must say.

I mean, over here he was known as the winner of The X Factor.
Smith never competed on the X Factor or any other talent show. I don't what you mean by "his entire personality is purely from reality tv." To me he comes off as a genuine, articulate and good humoured guy - he's not a Miley Cyrus or Justin Bieber ego.
He didn't at all did he? Apologies for how misinformed that post was. Dunno where I got that bollocks from. Totally fits the X-Factor mould though. Probably why I got a tiny bit confused.

A neat little feature via EMPIRE Online; the Bond themes thought lost. Probably heard them all, or some, or none - either way, enjoy!http://www.empireonl...ost-bond-themesJohnny Cash sings 'Thunderball'?! YES PLEASE.
Those are varying levels of horrible except for Rogers' YOLT and Straw's TWINE. Bassey's QoS is still spectacular though.

Noel Gallagher says he'd love to do a Bond theme if asked, but comments that the artist chosen needs to be famous in the US.

I would also suggest that the artist needs to be very famous in the US and in the UK/Europe to be chosen, and this rules out a number of artists, who are known in only one. This scenario has been true for every Bond theme song artist since 1985.

i'd add Alice Cooper's Man with the Golden Gun to the list along with Julie Rogers. But most of the time, I'd say the producers made the right choice. Still, it'd be nice if David Bowie, Kim Wilde, Sade, and Marillion got to do Bond songs. I mean, a-ha got a song. Another Way to Die is god awful. Blondie's song wasn't as good as Sheena Easton's, but better than a lot of official Bond songs. Same for Ace of Base's GoldenEye entry. If Gladys Knight and Annie Lennox both disapproved of the violence in Licence to Kill, wouldn't Gloria Estefan have been a better choice given the latin elements of the story?
"Writing's on the Wall" isn't a bad Bond song title, especially given the wall names in the SPECTRE trailer. But "Spectre" isn't that hard a title to incorporate. Perhaps it will be in the lyrics. With the song written so early, perhaps Thomas Newman incorporated the them into more of the score.

I must admit I'd never heard the Lorraine Chandler version of YOLT - was it really written by John Barry? Doesn't sound like it to my admittedly tin ear.
As for the new song, since it was writtten early on there's no reason why it couldn't be intergrated into the score. As for the word "spectre" - well, how many times have you heard or read the words "the spectre of" or "a spectre is"? I think the word could have been included in the lyrics without difficulty.

. Still, it'd be nice if David Bowie, Kim Wilde, Sade, and Marillion got to do Bond songs.
I assume you mean in the past? They wouldn't get the job now - they are too old and too old-fashioned. Kim Wilde plays cheap concerts in cheap venues and who knows what Marillion are up to these days?
One of the pre-requisities of the Bond theme artist is to have had a big hit at least in the last 5 years!

I'm ok with "Writing on the wall," but there were numerous ways that "Spectre" might have been used as title for the main theme. Over in the Bond musical thread, I suggested that there might be a song titled "The Spectre in your eyes," and Mrs. Tallon rather liked that.
Then I got silly and composed a goofy lyric line: "You know it's Spectre, Spectre; Eviller than Hannibal Lector." An idea best forgotten, I'm afraid.

I'm sure there will be a mention of a spectre in the lyrics, much like Bond does casually to Largo in 'TB' - "the spectre of defeat" and "it's your spectre against mine" etc.

Listening to those rejected songs, only Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and the Julie Andrews Rogers You Only Live Twice standout as a good songs. The Alice Cooper one is pretty awful and derivate and none of the 90s entries standout, except for maybe the Saint Etienne Tomorrow Never Dies.

I don't claim this for all the artists mentioned.... But Bowie with his latest album The Next Day (2013) was no. 1 in the UK and no. 2 in the US, and also had a Top Ten (no.6) single in the UK from that same album. And his music, according to several critics, was pretty current in that record.

Not entirely convinced about that. But maybe this is true from a technical standpoint, in a parallell universe somewhere. From a technical standpoint, Smith is a better singer than Adele and he's demonstrated more range and control between registers. This is no surprise when you consider his years of formal training and experience as a choirboy.

I do favour Adele and her power and range over what I've heard of Smith any day of the week.
