Check out 1:04, as the Falcon swoops up above the dunes....lens flare!
And the fact the Stormtroopers are real costumes makes me feel fuzzy inside - practical costumes, not CGI.

It looks OK, based on what we've seen. I do greatly appreciate that they're going for more practical effects over just using CGI at every turn. The storm-trooper bit was probably the best part of the trailer, IMO.
Very surprised not to see any lense flare in the trailer. There's still plenty of time left, however, to fit it into the finished product.
Agree with all you said t., but I did see a bloody lens flare when the millennium falcon did her backflip. Gonna see it again for confirmation.
Edit: Yep, it´s there, briefly, but it´s a direct hit of the sun on the falcon´s fuselage.

I guess I missed the lense flare. It must not have been as obvious as the ones in his Star Trek films, but I guess we all had to know he was going to sneak one in there somewhere.

Not as obvious, no. But the guy does have a "flair" for danger. If he abuses the flare, Star War fans will eat him alive. His Trek films were very entertaining though. Got some hopes for this one.

I found the trailer underwhelming, and it hasn't really done much to excite me about the project.

I was expecting a bit more as well, which is why I thought it was just OK. I think that had there been an over-reliance on CGI that my opinion would have gone down even further, but the fact that there seems to be at least somewhat of an emphasis on practical effects has me somewhat optimistic.

My thoughts exactly. But it really did´t amp up the vibe for me. There wasn´t much vibe to begin with, mind you, but I expected to be even more surprised. As tdalton mentions, the really positive things about the teaser were the practical effects.

The trailer showed some awesome stuff, but for me it also left a lot to be desired. I can't wait for the film, but as a teaser for the first Star Wars film in 9 years. (31 years if those prequels didn't do it anything for you) it didn't raise my excitement levels as much as I thought it would. Nothing to do with the film itself though, it looks great. I think I was just expecting a better trailer.

I am surprised that the trailer actually had something there! JJ Abrams whenever he says he is giving someone a sneak peak it's like a 30 second long video.. so I am glad that he actually gave us a trailer. That being said, I like the narrating in that movie a lot! The triple bladed villain dude looks cool, do we know who the actor is that's playing him by chance?

Anyone else notice the Falcon's new rectangular radar dish? The original one was knocked off by Lando in ROTJ.

Although I did not want to... I brought my expectations with me to my first viewing of the teaser. And I was disappointed. No Luke, Han, Leia, Chewie, R2, C3PO? C´mon! What a letdown!
And then I slept over it. Watched it again.
And loved it.
This teaser is not about feeding nostalgia. It´s about using nostalgia to tell a new story. Its priority is to introduce the four major new characters and connect them to the world(s) we know - and at the same time moving forward into new areas.
I think this is one of the most intelligent and effective teasers in a long time.
I am psyched!

Three things:
1) X-WINGS!
2) TIE FIGHTERS! Love that sound.
3) Is it just me, or at the end of the first shot, can you faintly here the coded messaging of an Imperial probe droid a la Empire Strikes Back?

what are the chances that Daisy Riely character is not related to either Skywalker or Solo......there no way there no bloodline as another forum mention the resemblance to Padame and Leia

Well said. This is exactly the problem with the Jurassic World teaser. It made the new film (and don't get wrong, it totally got me psyched for it) feel too much like the old one. But at the same time, I think it wanted to show that this new film has far more in common with JP1 than either of it's poor sequels.
I think the SW7 trailer kind of did the same. It showcased the sets over flash. The film definitely has a Star Wars Ep 4 vibe vs. the prequels. Can't wait to see more.

I must have watched the trailer a dozen times now.
The music is wonderful. The shocking reveal of a storm trooper and the sounds of an Imperial probe droid make it so exciting. That Dasiy is beautiful.

That's what I got of that. I don't believe Boyega is playing a Stormtrooper and the probe does make the scene/shot interesting. What I got out of it was that something happened. Possibly Boyega is on the run. Who knows.

When I first saw the trailer for SP7 I thought it was good, then I eventually came to think of it as a little weak. After watching it again several times, I think it's terrific. I'm glad they put all the major scenes in it all, and left a little to the imagination. For the reasons you've stated: sets over flash, it brought familiar things to people and fans, whereas Jurassic World was a CGI highlight reel and some acting mixed in. While I appreciate the trailer for Jurassic World trying to be tongue in cheek with the original film, it felt as if it needed to showcase everything to get it by.

Yea, I felt the same way. Initially, the SW7 trailer underwhelmed, but after re-watching a few times and analyzing it you can really appreciate what Abrams did much more. I really like the sets, but especially the lightsaber, which (I think it was you who mentioned it as well, Ace) had the afterburners to keep from overheating. It really looked far more like the original, than the sabers from the prequels. Jurassic World, on the other hand, showed too much CGI and unpolished CGI at that. However, I'm confident that Trevorrow and Spielberg will have that taken care of in post-production. Bottom line is, I'm completely psyched for both films. 2015 is set to be a fun year at the movies.

I think the trailer should have shown something more to excite and entertain. This isn't pre-1999 anymore. The prequels have put a sour taste in people's mouths, and people are more skeptical about the series. I don't think this alleviated any real concerns one way or another. It just said another Star Wars film is coming out.

I just finished watching the Star Wars trailer again and I really liked seeing the Millenium Falcon. That was cool. I am trying not too hard to judge it too quick. I am just going to sit back and relax and wait and see for more news.

Again, no news or updated cast lists to my liking... WHERE IS BILLY DEE WILLIAMS?!? I need my Lando...
Posted 02 December 2014 - 01:12 AM
Saw on the news today, the voice over in the trailer is Andy Serkis....
Posted 02 December 2014 - 03:59 AM
Yeah I heard about that! I thought it sounded really cool though so it didn't bother me. Plus we know that he has some sort of role in this movie.

Here's an article about that actually.

I think this teaser does something we've forgotten what teasers do.....TEASE.
Flashes of characters, worlds and potential action without ruining anything or giving away anything major. It really is genius and I think we've come to expect more when really we shouldn't.
Everything was there to make me forget the prequels (not in a bad way), but to clearly say this is a sequel to Episode VI, not Episode III. No obvious CGI or prequel characters here to sell us, we have X-Wings, the Falcon, Stormtroopers and TIE Fighters...what more do we need to tell us we are in the Star Wars universe we all really want to see more of.
And I think it's so brave they don't need to show the original cast from the OT in quick glances. They've sold us with the new, more unknown cast already and they certainly look more than able to carry this.
Bloody brilliant if you ask me. And that final few moments with the Falcon and the main theme? THAT is Star Wars man....I can't WAIT!
Posted 02 December 2014 - 03:37 PM
I would say obvious CGI is the way the Falcon looked. It looks too skinny. I know the new one is CGI, but couldn't they have scanned the original model?
oh well.

I agree with this statement.

I'm giddy over the fact we have anything at all at this point, over a year before the film opens!

So I just watched the trailer again and noticed what could have been a lightsaber strapped to Daisy Ridley's speeder-like vehicle when she first gets on it... thoughts?

I've seen that in an article, they though it might be Luke's and the forcing is telling her to return it...
Posted 02 December 2014 - 10:19 PM
I thought it looked more like a long handled lightsaber, which was a thing in the Expanded Universe.

You mean this? I know in the Expanded universe that there's long, very long handle lightsabers, but I don't think this is one.
