It's nice to see a film wrap over a year before it's due for release - to hone up the edits, soundtrack effects, re-shoots; really take your time to make something worthy and special.
Usually major films, ones with budgets over $100,000,000 do to allow the proper time needed for the extensive post-production process, ranging from visual effects to sound mixing and sound design to re-recording and to scoring.
King Kong was completed the same year of release which may sound scary considering how large that film is, but Jackson actually shoots and edits as he goes and plans practically everything so the post-production process is simple. Same thing with the bond films. Quantum Of Solace finished filming in July of 2008 if I recall, only three and a half months before it's release.
Fincher also usually shoots fast with The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo beginning filming in late November, early December 2010 and lasting up to May/June of 2011, and Post production lasting only four-six months.
Some films turn out to be great with long post-production time, or short time, it all depends on the script in my opinion.
