It´s not like Newman tells the orchestra: oh, what the heck, just play something.
It is all well-thought out.
But to each his own.

The last score I heard that I hated, was Hans Zimmer's The Dark Knight Rises. So I'll wait to hear the soundtrack on Nov. 6th and go from there. I'm actually anticipating Newman's score for the film.

David Arnold never left. The guy's like The Thing. Just when you think he's gone, he assumes the body of another composer.

Clearly the two of us have completely different tastes ,I really enjoyed Hans Zimmer's tracks especially "Gothams Reckoning" and "Imagine The Fire" ,Obviously they wont suit Bond in the Slightest but still great tracks, Whats Your opinion on David Arnold's score of the Craig era ?It's just one particular moment/scene, let's wait until the score is released.

QOS was alright, but CR was dullest Bond score of the lot.

Of the whole soundtrack those were the two I enjoyed. Should've clarified that. It seems that in the last 5-10 years Zimmer's work has become the same. I thank Nolan for that. The last good score by him in my opinion is 'The Da Vinci Code', hell I'll even through 'Sherlock Holmes' In there.
As for my opinion, I liked the QOS score, one of my favorites, Casino Royale was alright, don't care for the rest. Just finally glad there's a new composer this go-around. Time to hear something different.
I used to think that Hans Zimmer would do a good Bond score, but as long has he's jocking around the Inception Horn, I'll pass.

I guess if you're an Arnold fan, that's Ok. But like I said, it's selling the house to move next door.

It's probably a bit early to be decrying it: we've heard a few seconds. Sure he sounds a bit Arnold there but there's a whole filmfull of other stuff to come.

Your right by saying that zimmer's work has become mostly the same ,I really really loved the scores of CR and QOS alot,I guess I just don't want to let go of Arnold I just like him too much , I love the kind of intensity he gives the action , regardless if anyone calls him generic.

There really is no pleasing some of you people, is there? 10 seconds of an action clip with heavy orchestral Bond theme use, and Tom Newman's already failed. No one was more nervous about his hiring than me, but Jesus. Can we be a little less message-boardy for once?
Hear hear! Bravo, MattofSteel!

Matt, I´ve been seeing this all over. About the new clip, about the tv spots, about the posters, about the song, ..., I mean, what´s up with people nowadays?? This is the best Bond effort in years! It´s all about us Bond fans and what do we do? We complain! Makes me wish there were no media. Back in the old days, we´d have newspaper cuts and that was all! Bond mania was huge and everything was taken as cool. Really?!? This all pedantic attitude towards wvery bloody thing makes me nauseous. Yes, this is a board. Yes, we discuss things and have opinions. But bloody hell! seems no one can enjoy anything anymore!!! To think we reacted badly to Cap. Tightpants and Silhouette and others. It´s as if everyone drank from the same rotten coulee. I´m starting to miss those guys, and that´s saying a lot. Oh, and before anyone says it, I´m not stating that criticism (especially well cunstructed one, like Shark´s) is bad. Just, please, don´t overdo just for the sake of it. Rant over. Do carry on.

My opinion exactly. It's just annoying, we're on a Bond fan site and we're seeing all this hate for Adele, Newman, etc. Can't we just be satisfied with what we have? (I'll admit, a little hypocritical in this case!) Hey, maybe it's not the greatest, or maybe it's the best, but IT'S BOND. It's kind of hard to be excited when you hear pessimistic comments.
Goddammit.

Than you should avoid discussion forums like the plague.
Both film fans and music fans are quite the opinionated lot and when music and film converge as film score fans ... they become film and music hyper-opinionated bastard's child.
The good of it is that you get to discuss things with those with common interests/knowledge and passions. The bad of it is as you (and others) have stated. Welcome to the Internet.

This film has unbelieveable potential- from story, director, actors, stunts, music,
etc. When the film comes out, I will see it numerous times, then make my own
judgements. I must say, I haven't been this excited about a Bond film since
YOLT and I was 13 at the time.

A-freaking-men. It's like:
"WE WANT SOME PRECARIOUS AND SUBJECTIVE MIX OF NOSTALGIC AND CONTEMPORARY w/ A DOSE OF DEFINITIVE BOND!"
"Here you go."
"WE DIDN'T MEAN THAT PRECARIOUS AND SUBJECTIVE MIX OF NOSTALGIC AND CONTEMPORARY w/ A DOSE OF DEFINITIVE BOND!"
(And I'll second my support of Shark's criticisms, if only because they're very technically informed and often thoroughly relevant to the discussion).
(Despite the fact that I'm about to lay into him here.)
You're forgetting the Arnold-esque strings and drum loop.
We can take this to the other thread if you'd like, Shark, but come the on.
Arnold-esque strings? What the hell are Arnold-esque strings? A guy playing a violin? What's Arnold have to do to use strings right? And what could Newman possibly have done wrong in those 35 seconds? So just because it's not a sweeping, romantic rendition of You Only Live Twice it must be bad?
It sounds heavily Barry-inspired, it's exciting, driving, and it sounds like Bond. I really could not give less of a if the drums are looped. Maybe that makes me a simpleton in taste. That's fine. That's why we have Bond movies, and why we also have symphonies.
There's criticism out of merit, and then there's criticism out of pure spite. It's this kind of sentiment that won't make ignoring the CBN boards during my two week October 26th -November 8th gap difficult.

Arnold-esque strings? What the hell are Arnold-esque strings?
I'll tell you exactly what Arnold-esque strings are. They're Newton-Howard-esque strings, which are also Silvestri-esque strings, and so on, if you get my drift.
In other words they're a trait of generic 21st century Hollywood action music. Low marcato strings pounding an octatonic ostinato (listen to Arnold's "Stairwell Fight") or one based around a tetrachord (set of four pitches) set such as in this case - C#-D-E-F, which hints at both the melodic minor, harmonic minor, octatonic scale, and the locrian mode. That also happens to be the four pitches of Arnold's 6-note NWAGB motif, heard extensively throughout QOS. Whatever it is, it's ain't Barry, and it doesn't sound much like Newman either.

I do agree that it easily could have been an Arnold snippet. There has been some Arnold-bashing by us as a group, over the years and it does seem a bit odd that the snippet, and therefore, Newman is getting criticized while simultaneously being praised for not being Arnold.
Example - I think the Adele song is pretty decent, but I'm not going to sit here and say that's it not derivative. The reality is, it's a 50-year old franchise and it's got to be an unbelievable challenge to try to be completely new in any department of the film without being guilty of straying to far away or not wandering far enough.
We are a difficult lot to please

I praised his hiring (can't speak for others), hoping he'd bring his own voice, not being Arnold-lite.
