Craig played the obnoxious son of Paul Newman's gangster in the Sam Mendes film "Road to Perdition".

But it is whether Craig is capable of playing a villain, and I think he is. As did the film reviewer of The Guardian newspaper, Peter Preston. In his review of CR, he reckoned that Craigs success as Bond was in part because you could imagine him as a Bond villain as much as Bond himself - the old "duality" line, Bond the secret agent with an eye for the ladies on one side and the borderline psycho-killer - seen to great effect in CR's black and white opening - on the other side.

Peter Preston I think came up with one of the most remarkable comparisons of Bond with others - not other Bonds, mind you. He said Craig in CR reminded him of a mix of Robert Shaw's Red Grant of FRWL, and Patrick McGoohan's defiant Number 6 in "The Prisoner". I read this before I saw CR and thought "this is going to be interesting!" And so it proved.

Craig did mention that he thought they wanted him to play a villain in the Bond 21 project .. He is a perfect actor and he can plays any role you give him for sure .. They are definitely using his talent and ability to take bond to a new direction..

Craig was the villain in Road To Perdition (technically) as well as his appearance in Sharpe

If the films are to continue in the same style as now, then we need a Bond actor who one can imagine as a villain as much as a hero.

Fassbender would fit that bill (the X-Men films, "12 Years A Slave").

I'd rather have Fassbender than Hardy. Can't stand Tom.

After all the media hoopla - I'd be disappointed if it wasn't Idris Elba. I really think he'd be a marvellous choice. I know that his age (amongst, very sadly, other reasons) is putting fans off the idea - but I don't think it really matters. I actually think his age could help in someways. They could easily get three or four movies out of him.

I can't imagine the next guy being anyone else. I really want to see Elba do this.

Idris nor any black actor will ever play bond .. I cant see that happening even on my dreams !! No one can change the fact that James Bond is a white guy .. People like to talk about racist issues these days but the bond thing is something else ..

IMHO, not Idris Elba.  I tend to want to keep characters as much in line with the original author's intended vision of that character as possible.  Being a great actor at about the right age is not enough.  He needs to be, as much as possible, Fleming's Bond, not just in spirit, but in looks as well.  He needs to have Fleming's pedigree intended for the character.  I think this should hold as true as possible for any literary character even when and especially when that transition moves to a visual medium.

The same goes for many of the other actors suggested.  Too many of them look too much like "pretty boys"...too generic, too much like the next fashion model. Bond's face needs to have character, uniqueness, experience cut into the face.  I tend to visually prefer Craig, Connery and Dalton for this very reason.  Visually, I least prefer Brosnan.  No one perfectly fits the mold, but we need to get as close as possible in as many ways as possible IMHO.

"Media hoopla" should be the least of deciding factors in who plays Bond next. They sensationalize their stuff to sell papers or get cheap rating. Unfortunately after they throw enough crap at the wall, some will stick because people are easy to acclimate to even the most absurd notions. A black Bond is an absurd notion!!!!. And please don't even play the race card. Bond is a half Swiss/half Scottish guy. I wasn't even for the blond Bond, but at least that could answer the description. There are lots of black actors I like that could fit a suave action man perfectly. But name him something other than James Bond. Create a new line of movies. Agent 009 or something. Leave 007 alone. No black 007s! No woman 007! If EON bends to PC pressure and chose either as a future Bond I will stop watching them.

There will be a black Bond at some point. When, I don't know, but I would imagine that it's something that will happen in my lifetime. There seems to be too much of an appetite for it to not happen at some point, especially if another actor somewhere down the road captures the attention of the media and the public in the way that Elba seems to have.

The next Bond actor should be chosen on the basis of suitability for the part, not media hoopla. If Idris Elba is good enough, and I expect he is, then he'll be on the shortlist, but so will other candidates. But the choice should be down to those who know best - the film makers - and not driven by media campaigns, traditional or social.

Never mind all this talk about Idris Elba, Tom Hardy, Michael Fassbender and old Uncle Tom Cobbleigh and all! According to the front page of today's Daily Star newspaper, it's all sorted for Bond 7. Colleagues, I give you, courtesy of the Star;

David Beckham.

Yes, you may not believe it (I certainly don't! ;-)) ) but according to this red topper the ex-England football captain is in line to be the new James Bond! And just to prove a point, he has a full page picture on page one of himself in a cream tuxedo suspiciously like the one in a certain recently released film poster.

The British tabloid press - don't you just love 'em? ;-))

In terms of worldwide exposure, that's not a wholly absurd idea.

Even if it's a wholly absurd idea.

Yes, no more absurd than, say, Robbie Williams, who was also "mentioned in dispatches" as a future James Bond by the very same newspaper a few years back.

(Along with Sharon Stone as Bond's former lover turned villain, and Ewan McGregor as their equally villainous love child. With Mel C from the Spice Girls doing the theme tune!)

Homeland's Peter Quinn (Rupert Friend) is Fleming's Bond.

Friend could easily be bond tall and young.. British as well .. And the most important to me is the failure of the new hitman reboot.. Makes it easy for him to be cast as the new 007 ..

I don't see why a contemporary Bond couldn't be black, and I'd much rather see Elba than Tom Hardy, who I've liked as an actor, but didn't impress me at all as Mad Max. Elba won't get it, if for no other reason than his age. Even if Spectre proves to be Craig's final outing, by the time they get around to shooting the next one, Elba will be the same age as Moore when he started, and I can't see them going down that path again.

Rupert Grint then. Actually, Domhnall Gleeson could be interesting as the Doctor.

Right, off topic.

I actually don't think David Beckham is that crazy.  I wouldn't bet on it though.

My top choices on September 2015 are Aidan Turner, Henry Cavill, and Eric Bana.

And call me crazy, but I've also got my eyes on Kit Harrington.

UNBELIEVABLE!

I have suggested many actors earlier in this very thread that totally look the part and was attacked by those who demand that the actor mentioned was not a great thespian. Now David Beckham actually gets traction in this thread!!

UNBELIEVABLE!
