I suspect this would officially rule out Cavill's Bond chances.

http://www.imdb.com/news/ni54673315

Meanwhile as for who I'd like to see get the job - it is very simple: the best person. Would I have picked Craig based on his previous roles + appearance after DAD? Almost certainly not, but look how it's turned out! The best person is more than likely going to be a complete unknown who doesn't have the baggage that other high-profile candidates mentioned here do! We are probably due an unknown surprise - but I suspect the studio would prefer "a name"! ;)

Why would that rule him out?

I think that, if the assumption that they're trying to make THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. into a franchise is accurate, that having Cavill in both another spy franchise as well as being the lead in the new Superman franchise would rule him out for being Bond.

I see, so because Cavill would be committed to a spy franchise in The Man From U.N.C.L.E, would rule him out of the James Bond franchise which also happens to be a spy franchise. Makes sense. Like how J.J. Abrams is already committed to the Star Trek sci-fi franchise, so he would be ruled out of directing the competing sci-fi franchise Star Wars. Oh wait...

Different circumstances.  Abrams isn't the face of the STAR TREK franchise.  We surely won't be seeing Chris Pine or Zachary Quinto in starring roles in STAR WARS VII, which would be a more fair comparison.

MAN OF STEEL alone is almost enough to disqualify Cavill from being Bond.  It's going to be a huge hit simply because it has Christopher Nolan's name on it, and regardless of how well he actually performs as Superman, he's going to become a major star by playing the part.  He'll be far too big for Bond after MAN OF STEEL, and even moreso after they release a sequel or two by the time Craig steps down from the role.  Add to that the fact that he'd be starring in a "rival" spy franchise (although how much UNCLE could rival Bond remains to be seen), and there's very little chance that Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson are going to bring somebody with that much baggage to the role.  They're almost certainly going to go for a similar approach to the last time, which would be to find a relative unknown actor who fits whatever direction they want to take the franchise in the post-Craig era.

I agree. I suppose Bond 7 is out there right now in the same point in his career as Craig was in perhaps his late 20's or early 30's. Successful actor but still only a extra or feature in smaller roles.

How about the old fashioned (Cubby) way and making The (new) Saint Adam Rayner Bond Nr.7 after the end of the show? :-)

Not much love for Adam Rayner here, I guess

Just throwing names around:

Damian Lewis - a redheaded  Bond, maybe too far off, I know.

Benedict Cumberbatch - now that I've seen him as the villain in Star Trek, I think he could pull off an action hero, and he's got the right posh image for Bond.

1000000% it will be Henry Cavill.

Doesn't matter if he is Superman.  He will probably do another 2 movies as said character and then make the move to Bond.

If the above isn't enough proof that this guy should be next Bond, i dunno what is.

He even talks about how he lost the role to Daniel, as the producers wanted an older Bond.

We'll see how it goes. Although I loved MoS. It was an interview I saw with Henry which made me go 'Please be Bond!'  I don't care how big he gets. I am sure that if he's asked once again to audition for the role he'd go for it.

I'm not sure Cavill's Solo/UNCLE affair will help him with possibly landing the Bond role now.

I still don't like to think Craig will finish with only 5 films. Its just kind of strange to think he will be out lived by over action superstars who started even before him like Hugh Jackman/Wolverine, Tom Cruise/Ethan Hunt: Mission Impossible and possible even Van Diesel/Fast & Furious. At the same time if they want to make a big transition to a much younger Bond in their early 30's it might be easier if Craig doesn't reach his 50's in the films.

By the time Craig steps down from the role there will be new blood to consider. Also having Cavill play Napoleon Solo and James Bond would be a little odd. I hope Cavill knocks it out of the park with his portrayal of Solo. Anyone here not familiar with Solo and his cohort?

There is lot assumption that Next Bond has to be younger. Why not an older Bond in his 50s ? This would make Craig eligible for some additional Bond and gives some interesting directions for the scripts

Yes, he would look the part but I suppose the flag in the sand with Daniel Craig is that they have gone for more than looks; based on the Stalin film (I never knew Stalin was an alien - explains much), I'm not sure Mr Cavill has much beyond an appealing look and it might therefore be a step backwards?

I appreciate he was playing a real-life figure (although Man of Steel's grasp of Soviet history seems a bit shaky, and where was the moustache?) rather than a fictional hero but I wasn't particularly taken with him.

My favorites for the role after Craig departs are still Rupert Friend & Max Brown at this point, but having watched The Fall recently, the name Jamie Dornan might be an interesting name for the future. Definitely a good actor with potential. (Though most of the pictures online will give the impression that he's just a model.)

I could be wrong. But I can't see Craig staying beyond two more films. He's not that much invested in the role, and I got the sense from interviews he did for SF that he was getting a bit physically tired from doing the films. Craig is pushing 50 and I suspect that he's the sort of man who would like to go out on a high.

There's an interview with Henry Cavill in this months Interview magaziine. And he actually talks about how much he loves Bond. Re-watching MoS the other day. I think he could pull it off.  Much like Craig's Bond, he comes across as a nice guy with an edge. Or a man who is good because he chooses to be good, as opposed to giving into his dark nature.

Of the current group of actors that have been suggested, Rupert Friend is my favorite for the role as well.  I remember reading somewhere on these forums a while back that he gave a very good audition for Casino Royale.

The problem with this clip is Cavill hasn't really shown much charm in his acting, and the most charming man in the world can't necessarily act.

This is my problem with Cavil too. He may well turn out to be a great actor  with great screen charisma and 'charm'. But so far i've seen just a little screen charisma, nothing that exhibits charm and he's yet to take on a role (that i've seen) which tests/develops his acting chops.

He's great as the 'leading-man cypher' in 2 dimensional action dramas, but good Bond movies require a little more depth to bring Flemings work to life, or else the character can easily become a run of the mill cypher.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that Cavill yet has a facility for these attributes in reserve.

Victoria Beckham wants David Beckham to be the next James Bond.

While David - who retired from soccer last month - insists he has no plans to become an actor, Victoria thinks her spouse of almost 14 years is the perfect man to take over as 007 when Daniel Craig steps away from the role.

David said: "I have some friends who are actors, Tom Cruise is a very good friend of ours. But I don't think I have any plans to become an actor. I'm not sure I'd be very good at it."

During a joint interview with Chinese news station CCTV, Victoria interrupted to say: "I think you would be really good at acting."

After turning to the interviewer and saying: "Don't you think he'd be good at acting? I think you'd be great!" she added: "I think he should be James Bond! He'd be a good James Bond!"

Jason Statham
The star of films such as The Transporter, The Italian Job, Crank, War and The Expendables has that perfect balance of rugged good looks and kick ass fighting skills that you would want out of James Bond.  Who needs suave when you can beat a man to death with his bare hands and we all know that Statham wouldn't have any problem getting any on screen Bond girl that he wanted.

I couldn't imagine a worse choice.

I wouldn't go to the cinema to see Statham play Bond. I wouldn't buy the DVD. I wouldn't even download it. I would just wait the necessary number of years for the next Bond to come along. Then I would try to forget it ever happened.

I pray the Bond producers never go down the rugged, "kick ass" action hero road...

... oh wait. I think they already did.

Cavill IS signed for Napoleon Solo and if U.N.C.L.E. does well there will be another. Once he establishes himself in the role it would be like having Damon take over Bond after being Bourne.

Who knows, you just might end up liking U.N.C.L.E. enough that it won't matter that he's not playing Bond.

The problem with this clip is Cavill hasn't really shown much charm in his acting, and the most charming man in the world can't necessarily act.

Let me be frank here.  While I don't find DC as Bond slick or polished like the other Bonds (with the exception of Dalton who  reminds me of an accountant) I do find him more likeable. Mostly because he comes accross as friendly and sincere. As opposed to a phony. After I saw CR I thought to myself that it's a good thing that he did not try to be charming a la Brosnan or Moore because he would have just looked silly.

I loved DC in CR because while he was kind and friendly with Vesper, when she started what I call 'the woman nonsense' he just cut right through that and put his foot down.  I honestly think that Craig's charm for Bond works as him being kind and affable and of course being able to fill out a nicely tailored suit. I think that kind of charm can work for the right actor playing Bond and it is not neccessary for him to be as slick as Roger Moore.
