It stops totaly. But I tried to play it on another DVD player and it worked fine.

That sounds more like a DVD problem rather than a layer change.

I've had a similar problem like this awhile ago, and someone explained that it could be due to one player using 2 lasers and therefore some DVDs may not play well (or at all) on them while the player that the DVD works on uses 3. Something like that, but I could be wrong.

But in this day and age I would not have thought such problems would occur anymore.

Some older or budget players (not saying you have either) can sometimes be tripped up by newer and more complex dvd's. I know that my older player used to have fits when I tried to play some DVD's with lots of extras and would occasionally 'hang' (although not too long) at layer changes. This may be what was causing the problem with the previous posters FRWL disc.
I'm just as inclined to think that some DVD's/players just aren't compatible on occasion.

Just a heads-up to collectors but I just bought the sets at Wal-Mart and in sets 3 and 4, they had mini-versions of the Secret World of 007 book. I already have the big book but the mini sets are kind of cute.

Is this Wal-Mart only?

By 'mini' is it like the book that came free with the Sin City extended/recut DVD? In that it's a smaller print version. Or is it just abridged?

Got sets #2 and #3 for Xmas (R1) and a funny thing about the bonus discs in set #3: the menus are all in Japanese! And every program you select has Japanese subtitles active by default. The actual audio is still all English language though. All 5 bonus discs in the set are this way & while I'm fine with it (I can read the katakana, which is what most of it's written in) it's still pretty odd! My Philips DVD player is region-free, so I don't know if these discs are actually Region 2 with USA labels, or if the menu content was somehow mixed up during mastering/pressing/whatever. Has anyone come across this error or a similar one?

Well oddly enough on some of them, right when I press Play to start the movie, a page of Japanese text flashes up, followed by the MGM/UA logos and the movie plays fine, no Japanese subtitles, just that one page at the beginning. :)

I've got to say that I've been very impressed with the Ultimate Editions that I've had the opportunity to watch. I've got the second collection (the one with LTK, DAD, TSWLM, AVTAK, and TB), and the picture quality in four of the five (haven't watched TSWLM yet) have been fantastic, as has the sound quality. These are definitely great improvements over the special editions.

Got my four sets for Xmas as well and I am loving them. :)

The thing that has really stood out for me is the detail. I have only been skipping around a few of them, but I am seeing things I never saw before. For instance, on the walls of Scaramanga's home are mounted butterflies, and you can actually see birds in the distance when Scaramanga's junk is sailing away as the credits begin to come up.

In TSWLM, you can actually see rust on the side of Atlantis. It adds another layer to these films and makes them seem fresh again. Things like that make you really appreciate the effort the filmmakers put into them.

The only real extras I watched were some on the DAF DVD and even found watching the effects work intersting. A couple of the deleted scenes not on the SE DVD were interesting. I remember reading the Wint and Kidd murder of Shady Tree in the script and it was fun to see how it was filmed. I also liked the unscripted moments with Bond and Tiffany on the circular fish bed.

And I haven't even gotten through to the LTK deleted scenes or Vol. 3 and 4 for that matter!

Couldn't agree more, Turn. I noticed several crows flying around Piz Gloria in different scenes that I had never noticed before in [film=99]On Her Majesty

I Watched TB , DN & YOLT over last couple days the picture quality is outstanding although I dont know if its just me it they seem to have lost that 60's cinematic feel. It seems too fresh like a 60's rectro film.

No...this is an issue with your DVD player, not the discs. I had the same issue when I played them on my region-free player, but they played fine on my R1 player.

So, does R1 Goldeneye have these ugly player-generated subtitles instead of the original burnt-in ones? And more importantly, is it cropped as R2?

Subtitles are burned-in.

As to the cropping, I'd read tons of gripes on other fora about the cropping. There have been many screengrabs posted on these sites, which seem to indicate noticeable cropping. I watched some of the Goldeneye UE last night, and I was pleased to note that the cropping seemed much less noticeable than it had on the aforementioned screengrabs. I'm not a techie, but I believe that screengrabs posted on the internet and channeled through a CRT computer monitor are not at all reliable indicators of what a given dvd picture will actually look like on one's television. The Goldeneye R1 UE looks fantastic IMO. A big improvement over the R1 SE.

In the same vein, I was very anxious to check out the R1 UE of OHMSS. I'd seen many screengrabs of the pretitles, all of which seemed to indicate a major blue-ing up of these scenes, and making it look as if the scenes had been shot day-for-night, instead of day-for-dawn. I'm very pleased to report that the blue-looking screengrabs were very misleading. There is a noticeable but quite slight darkening of these scenes, with a very light blue-gray tint. It is still very much dawn, NOT evening. OHMSS looks fantastic.

I love the R1 UE's. Just watched LALD and it was amazing.

They are probably the same as R2, only improved.

R2 were a work in progress sent to the pressing plant.

R2 people don't give a damn penny about their buying buying public and the product quality. Most R1 007 UE seems better than the R2, ie burned in subtitles in GE.

I believe the US DVD releases of GoldenEye were always the same as the ones the UK just got uncut (as we always had the headbutt scene for example).

Just got GoldenEye and Thunderball. The quality of Thunderball is quite incredible, but GoldenEye is abortive. Surely this film was cleaned up by a blind left handed deaf Himalayan green gnome with galloping gonorrhoea. Is this the work of a stalwart like John Lowry. The quality of this dvd is appalling, and trust this to happen in a Brosnan. lol

The explosion as the plane flies over the dam, and the opening titles look like only 80% of the picture is being displayed. There's grain and blur around the text, and as Loomis or SNF has mentioned the picture is so obviously cropped.

I could have done better with supa glue, stain remover and about

Accident or design? :)

Today I got round to taking my UE disks out of the box, and found the slightly slimmer DVD cases mean I can fit 21 Bond movies into the same shelf space that used to hold 20. Very handy, what with Casino Royale on the way. :P

Oh I see.....thanks...

On a sidenote....At first when these Ultimate Editions were announced I was so sure I wasn't going to buy them and I was all like "I don't need another collection since I already have the Special Editions" etc, but as the release date was getting nearer I kept reading these reviews about how fantastic these new DVD's are and how they were an improvement over the Special Editions. So I started to think to myself "maybe I will buy them", and then finally about 3 weeks ago I saw the boxes at my local store and they looked awesome. That's when I just couldn't resist and decided I was going to buy them. I got Volume 1 this week and next week I will get Volumes 2,3, and 4.

But now I don't know what to do with my Special Edition Collection...I was thinking of selling them or should I keep them? .... what do you guys suggest?

Keep them! Keep them! Seriously don't get rid of them until you've watched all the new ones. You won't be getting much money for them anyway and, based on the comparisons I've seen, some of the UE's (i.e., Goldeneye) are poorly cropped.

Oh yeah, and if anyone's interested, check out this list of all the comparisons: http://bulletsnbabes...f59c8f74a8ff719

Don't judge color based on these comparisons, but you can see the cropping and noise.

I don't know about that. I sold my Special Edition DVDs for over $140.
