Since this thread seems to debate the subjective merits of "looks" and "charisma", I'd like the people who find Daniel Craig unattractive or "unBondian" to give their opinions of how Sean Connery looked in both DAF and in NSNA.

View Post

A most valid question, Tony, but one must bear in mind that Sean was Sean, the ur-Bond, if you will, and he had that indefinable quality, that je ne sais quoi . . . Sean Connery had, and still does have, IT.

(And I have actually met, and spent time over cocktails with, Sir Sean, so I do know whereof I speak!)

Exactly what I said: I wish he does.

What does give him a chance mean? Let's suppose I don't give him a chance. Will he not make the film? Of course I give him a chance; it is not up to me, you know. I just have to.

So, what does give him a chance mean? Stop posting, maybe? Or lie about how I see him?

If you care to look at my posts (and not just mine) you 'll see that our criticisms are either on a fun base, or on a suggestion basis. I said I liked him as a chap in the PR, I suggested he could be an ambassador for Liverpool 2008, I recommended he should have sideburns, I hoped they did good promotion, and many more.

This is just trivial conversation, you know. It is just for fun, since it has no impact on the actual results. While I was waiting to see the announcement in the news, there were other issues on, a lot more important than who is to play a role in a film, no matter how I love Bond for 22 years or so...

View Post

Fair enough. Guess I was reacting to what an overall sense that people were prejudiced against Craig and not prepared to give him a chance by actually watching the film. Nothing personal...strictly business :)

View Post

Very pleased about this :)
pgram rightly pointed it out.. it's trivial conversation, just for fun. we are always joking and yea, in my case I don't see Craig as Bond.. but I always repeat he's a good actor.
And you got the point right Avl.
It's nothing against him as ACTOR... just to me he doesn't look Bond. But as I said many times elsewhere.. I don't wish failure to anyone.
I found he didn't do well as a professional at the press conference, but did find him funny as person at times when he was laughing during it...
and I still think he needs to make up for it, but he can do it without much trouble. It just takes the will to do it.
this said.. we're up from some seriously trivial conversation in here... noticed that junk piece I posted? (WHICH I ORIGINALLY SAW FROM SHRUBLANDS, BEFORE HE GETS MAD AT ME FOR NOT GIVING HIM CREDIT! :)) from the taxi driver...? that's just totally trash.. and very sarcastic.. but funny. :)
and did you see that hilarious Welshcat poster?? :)
now welsh, Felix said he needs the muppet.. you gotta send it over to him! :)

Of course nothing personal. Bond is a, you know, bond for us all, not a divide. And I understand that if someone is pro Craig he could be irritaded by all this negative posts. That is why I like this thread: you know what to expect before you read the posts. Up to now, I (and not just me) have been very careful not to post too negative posts in other threads.

But you can look at it another way. We (antiCraig) have to express our negativity somehow, so that it we are through with it by November 17, 2006 and just enjoy CR. IMO, even if the film fails (especially then), in a few years time it will be considered at least cult, and maybe classic.

Having said all these, boy is he ugly! :)

though I haven't had cocktails with Sean.. I actually kept away from him in Rome since a friend of mine experienced what we call "mano morta" (that'd be dead hand in english.. means when a man just places his hand on a woman..without having permission to! lol).. He's apparently a liker of the genre, the devil! (which is why he was so good at Bond LOL :))
Another friend of mine instead was vacationing in Bali in the same hotel as Sir Sean.. and he helped her out like a real gentleman when they were on a boat..and she was having sea sickness!! just HOW embarassing can that be?? lol :)

Do you think the producers will realise the mistake they have made and look at all these polls with Craig on 10-13% approval rating and get another actor before filming begins?

Remember Michael J Fox was brought into Back to the Future after the previous actor had began filming and the movie went on to be one of the biggest hits ever.

Could this happen with Casino Royale?

Bond Bug dear! the reason why I arrived here (since it was you citing my story).
honestly I think... not a chance that this would ever happen with Bond. :)
but if the film actually is disappointing at box office, then they'll obviously do something about it. right?? :)

Goodness, just how many other famous people does Craig manage to look like? Here he's Mackenzie Crook's twin. People have compared his looks to those of Christopher Cazenove, Sid James and Vladimir Putin. I thought he resembled Nigel Havers at the Bond press conference, while at other times his face reminds me of Mark E. Smith's.

Is this guy the most chameleonlike actor since Peter Sellers, or what?

After driving Brosnan out of business, he is going to do the same with Steve Martin as Clouseau. He, actually, looks the part more than he does Bond.

And then, just wait until the new Austin Powers is released....

Hey Alessandra, the roving reporter who travels through that most wonderful of train stations in Milano! I am thrilled if my dashing James Bond good looks and charm inspired you to become a CBN regular and I see you are already on nearly 350 posts!

Yes I think it unlikely that they would replace Craig before filming, but nothing is impossible. If they did, they would have to bring in Brosnan to satisfy the critics or go for young Bond to explain a sudden change of heart.

I remember Roger Moore walked out of the musical Aspects of Love. A humiliating situation indeed. I wonder if he could have pulled it off. I never worked out if he really didn't think he was good enough, if he was advised to go, or if it was a crisis of self-confidence.

Ale,

Peter Sellers' "French accent" as Clouseau is every bit as thick and bizarre in English as it is in Italian.

Ironically, Sellers wanted to play Evelyn Tremble/James Bond in the first Casino Royale STRAIGHT, as sort of a "Connery lite". The producers and directors had other ideas, which is why he disappeared from the CR One set so often (fits of disappointment).

I don't think Craig has that problem....Tell me, with the new Craig photos out, does your mother still think he looks like Putin? They're already camping out in St. Petersburg and Moscow, perfectly willing to wait thirteen months... :)

Since this thread seems to debate the subjective merits of "looks" and "charisma", I'd like the people who find Daniel Craig unattractive or "unBondian" to give their opinions of how Sean Connery looked in both DAF and in NSNA.

A most valid question, Tony, but one must bear in mind that Sean was Sean, the ur-Bond, if you will, and he had that indefinable quality, that je ne sais quoi . . . Sean Connery had, and still does have, IT.

As always, thank you both.

While "IT" is largely undefinable, we know it we we see it, or feel it...

My dad is the same age as Sir Sean, has all his hair, and cuts quite a figure at 6'4". My mom, though, would take Sir Sean in a heartbeat --- of course, being aggravated for 50 years may have something to do with it... :)

As long as we don't get bummed out that Daniel Craig isn't Sean Connery, we may be OK when we see the results.
