It still sounds like it's going to be a bit of a trial to sit through but their marketing is certainly very striking.

I have to say, I don't get the complaints over the running time. As Loomis said in another thread, "It's not how long a movie is, it's how long a movie feels."

It's a personal thing - I have come to dislike having to sit in a cinema with a lot of restless infants and disruptive teenagers and mobile phones and (continues like this for several minutes of old fartery). Anything over two hours of that, regardless of what's up there in front of me, is unutterably vile. I expect one of the few times I will go to the cinema this year will be Quantum of Solace. I did like Batman Begins, though, so I'm not totally averse to a bit of Bat and will therefore catch it later - although I do wonder about those who would mythologise a comic book.

I'm just curious, but how long is THE DARK KNIGHT supposed to be? I had heard a while back that they were talking about 3 hours, but then I thought that I had heard that the estimate had been made that it wouldn't be close to 3 hours.

I do have to agree with the quoted post, however, that if it is a 3 hour film, then I'll probably pass on it until it reaches DVD. THE DARK KNIGHT was to be the one film that I was going to see in theaters this year, but at three hours of the unnecessary annoyances that one runs into at the movie theaters, it's just too long of a running time to try to ignore those problems.

Roughly 2 hrs, 45 minutes. It's just a loose estimate, given that we know it's somewhere in between 2.5-3 hours.

Sounds like they're definitely packing in quite a bit then. Wonder if it will remain at this length or be edited down towards something closer to 2 hours/2 hours and fifteen minutes.

We've known it would be about this length for quite some time.

Nolan has refused to edit it down any more, so it's remaining at this length.

Besides, the story wouldn't fit in a 2 hour, 15 minute film. THE DARK KNIGHT has tons more story content than BEGINS, and BEGINS was longer than 2 hours, 15 minutes.

Works for me then. One thing I'm especially looking forward to in the film is that it can get right into things, rather than have to explain how Bruce Wayne became Batman, as Begins obviously needed to.

If I recall correctly, Begins was right around the 2:15 mark (perhaps 2:20 or so).

Yeah. It's going to need that time, too, given the amount of material THE DARK KNIGHT has to cover.

Yeah, BEGINS was 2:20.

I've always loved the relationship between Bruce Wayne and Alfred, and I thought Begins really brought that to the foreground.. I'm really looking forward to seeing Michael Caine in this role again

Yeah, I loved Michael Caine as Alfred. One of the best things about BEGINS.

It's going to be bitter sweet watching The Dark Knight on July 18th.

It still is amazing that this movie was in the can so long ago and that there's still more than two-and-a-half months left to go before it's screened for the general public. I'll be surprised if the pirates don't get a hold of this movie well before its release. And i'm still completely blown away that the studio has taken the risk of it getting into the scummy hands of the piracy set given its unusally long~ish post production period where, it would seem, it'll be just collecting dust while waiting patiently to be shipped off to theatre owners.

Makes no sense, really. Warners knew that Nolan would called it a wrap by December and that everything would/should have been "done" in four to five months. And knowing that Indy's KotCS would be out on May 22nd, they should have gone for June 6th or (the latest) June 13th because recent history suggests a very short span for movies to bag their money and run. Wall-E's out June 27th which would have given TDK 2 or 3 weeks to haul it in and continue it's long legs through the rest of the summer.

I have to agree with you to some extent on the Batcycle, although I'm more indifferent to it than against it. I'm not, however, too fond of the two new posters that we've seen in the past few days.

I don't like the poster much at all. Definitely not as striking or dramatic as the other posters. It looks like something I'd see for a Michael Bay film. Meh.

But as far as the bat-pod goes, it's not pretty, but it's that way because of its function in the story. It's supposed to be clunky and makeshift in appearance.

The Harvey Dent one is great. Those not particularly familiar with the character probably won't get the careful suggestions in this picture (only one-half of his face is visible, and the "I Believe in Harvey Dent" badge suggests the coin), but for Batman fans, it does wonders. Great foreshadowing.

Agreed! I was wondering what they would do with the marketing campaign after Heath Ledger passed away. I'm glad they're leaving in the references to the joker but adding some nice hints toward the next film

Now that you've said this, I do see all of that in the poster. Looking at them a bit more, the three individual character posters are OK (not great, but OK), but the one with all three of them isn't.

Yeah. The concepts I really like (ala the Dent poster). I just don't think that the actual photoshop work is at all convincing. They have the quality of fan posters, not of official releases.

I have that same feeling about pretty much all of the posters for THE DARK KNIGHT that we've seen so far. They all look like fan art that don't look as though they've been created by a professional studio. Hopefully Warner Bros. will release a good poster before the film is released, but I haven't been overly impressed with any of them thus far.

I also think that the viral marketing that they've been using is starting to wear a bit thin now. It was a refreshing way to generate buzz for the film more than six months before it was supposed to be released, but at this point in the year, it's growing a bit tired and it would be nice if they would move towards a more traditional advertising campaign for the film.

I can't go that far. I adore the first three Joker-themed posters (especially the one with the Joker leering behind the foggy glass, which couldn't be improved), and the latest one of Batman standing in front of the burning building also strikes me as pretty damn good. They certainly run circles around most blockbuster poster work these days.

But it's kind of pointless to complain about the viral campaign since it's nothing more than a gift to the fans. It's not there to advertise the film, since it's just marketing to the group that was already locked-in as viewers. It's just Nolan saying, "Here... I know you're anticipating this, so have some fun while you wait."

The traditional advertising for THE DARK KNIGHT has already been going on, in the poster and trailer campaigns, and will certainly kick into high gear with lots of TV ads once we get closer to July.

I'll give you the Joker posters from a while back as being very good, but those are the only posters that have really been good, IMO. The one with Batman standing in front of a burning building did absolutely nothing for me, and neither does the new one with him riding the Batcycle.

How many posters does a movie need?

Still, when they're this good....

Mind you, the bike one seems to me more Judge Dredd than Batman, although for all I know the Bat's on a bike the whole darn time in the comics. Still, I have no doubt that THE DARK KNIGHT will be a rather better film than JUDGE DREDD.

Sorry, Tarl, but even as a Stallone fan I find JUDGE DREDD unwatchable. Had plenty of potential, that film, and actually the cast as a whole is pretty top drawer, but it's just a trainwreck of a movie. Possibly Stallone's very worst, which is saying something.

To be fair, some of these are from foreign markets outside of the U.S.

Batman has a bike in the comics that he uses occasionally, depending on the circumstance. But the bike in THE DARK KNIGHT has a very specific purpose.

Still, I have no doubt that THE DARK KNIGHT will be a rather better film than JUDGE DREDD.

Wouldn't take much.

I know  but I still think Tango & Cash is perhaps his worst movie("stop or my mom..." doesn't really count as he musta had temporary insanity). When is Rambo out on DVD?
