As long as they can make poker fit into the story well, intruiging, tense, all of the elements Casino Royale, I couldn't care less if they use Baccarat or Uno.

I honestly think that including baccarat, would be better, it would give the movie some sort of a classic touch. There are many movies with poker, not with Baccarat, it would be stylish and different.

Uhm ... I was about to reply to this news on page 1, a couple of hours ago, and now I have to wade through 4 pages ... the first sign that things finally start to happen outside of our minds :)

First of all, I don't really see how this one qualifies as a "spoiler", but there you go.
I'm not too concerned about the mere fact that Bond is playing Poker instead of Baccarat (rather strange thought, though), I'm (very) concerned about the entire silhouette that emerges from the shadows. The closer it gets, the more defined it gets, I'm less and less able (and willing) to see "James Bond".

This Poker thing is just symptomatic for an illness that plagues Bond since ... TWINE I think, and it's growing stronger. And strange enough, I can't attach a single word to this illness. Becoming ordinary, feeding the mass audience, humanisation of the characters ... all that belongs to this illness. It started with the Bond girls; they suddenly had to have a complex meaning for Bond (TND). Then it took over the villains; they had to be "psychologically interesting" and connected to Bond (TWINE, and in DAD even more). And finally, "it" got M.

Now, this may go far and beyond this news snippet, but that Poker news gave me a reason to say this.

I completely agree with Ty Hawthorne. We're not watching Bond to see our own world. 007 shows us our hidden desires and exotic places we'd love to go to. For instance, that's why I found TND visually so tiresome; because it shows me bloody skyscrapers. Even more: it shows me Hamburg, which I could visit today if I wanted to.

Mentally, I've arrived at a point where I think "What will they take from us next?" That COULD be a good sign because it's signaling that EON shakes things up a bit, but when I look at DAD, my answer to the question "Will it be successful?" can only be a big fat "NO".

Why don't they just produce *one* Bond film in the style of Thunderball or OHMSS? That would once and for all answer the question whether such a film would work today, something that EON always denied and they still didn't convince me. With Casino Royale, you've got your chance, your ONLY chance that's left (since it's the last Fleming novel that hasn't been adapted).
But that would require some guts and a will to take risks, and I'm afraid that's too much to ask for from Sony.

I'm terribly afraid that we'll get another schizophrenic DAD.

It might be new, it might be fresh and it might even capture some of our zeitgeist, but it's not Bond.

I'm getting a bit worried. Poker? I remember hearing the words "faithfull adaptation" at some point when CR was announced. Hmmm. Maybe its part of the whole "bringing CR up-to-date plan". Good luck to Martin Campbell.

EVERYONE plays poker!! That's why a Bacarat game would be so much more intersting, because I don't know how to play and neither does most of the audience....I can watch poker on tv twice a week! :)

I'm finding it hard to believe that this film will be a "faithful adaptation" of the novel like they keep telling us. All the reboot talk and now a James Bond-signature-staple (chemin de fer) is out with poker in it's place. The locations are off somewhere else which means I'm resigned to believe that Rene Mathis, yet again, won't appear (Mathis being French).

This sounds about as faithful as TMWTGG or DAF.. etc. Some may feel those to be better than the novels, but for Casino Royale - a novel that is obviously one of Fleming's finest, I was actually hoping for an actual faithful adaptation. I still hope we get it, but it doesn't look that way at all. C'est la vie....

I think that kind of change is good, because not alot of people (besides us james bond fans of course) know the concept of baccarat and would save a scene of trying to explain it. and since rumours have been speculating that it will take place in the Carribean, I think it would fit better.

People may complain, but it could have been worse. They could've got rid of it COMPLETELY.

No Fleming Bond novel has ever been faithfully adapted. Some, like FRWL and OHMSS are closer to the book than others (e.g. any 70s Bond movie which typically throws out everything but the villain's name and a location or two), but even these added extra plot elements and action/violence and explosions to make it more exciting on screen. Everybody knew that a verbatim adaptation of Casino Royale was never going to be on the, er, cards. The novel itself isn't long enough to make a 2 hour plus movie. If purist fans are going to be freaking out over cosmetic changes like this, then its going to be a bumpy ride from here on out. I really think people are emphasizing the wrong thing here; the point of the scene is not that they're playing baccarat, its that they're engaging in a psychological duel that will be won through a mix of skill, reading the opponent, and luck. The point is that this will still be in the movie; whether they do it with baccarat or poker is a minor detail as far as I'm concerned.

Hahaha...from a high society gentleman's game to a back-alley Vegas flash-in-the-pan. Maybe Dennis Rodman will play Mrs. DuPont. I can hear Le Chiffre now..."You're good, kid. But as long as I'm around you'll always be second best."

Or maybe instead of being a powerful French communist treasurer he is now a truck driver. Looking ominously across at Bond, beer bottle in hand, CAT baseball cap on backwards, he sneers and says confidently, "all in." The tension will be so thick you could cut it with a rusty knife.

Suddenly the idea of Daniel Craig as Bond is beginning to make sense....

ROTFLMAO!!! :) I can see it now.. Bond now drives a big 18-wheel semi, specially fitted out by Kenworth (who did the trucks for Licence to Kill). The music played over the poker scene will be Kenny Rogers singing The Gambler ( "You gotta know when to hold them...know when to fold them...know when to walk away..know when to run!") He now does his famous introduction " The name's Bond,...*spits out a big wad of tobacco then takes a swig of Wild Turkey* James Bond!!"

It's annoying how everyone suddenly thinks they're some big poker star or something. At least a lot of people at my college do. These whole poker fad is really bothering me. Bond shouldn't be playing such an American game, honestly. The original idea was fine, why do we need to seem him playing Hold 'Em?

Yes, I agree 100%. I love poker too and I play regularly on Pokerstars.net but I want Bond to play bacarat, or better yet, Chemin De Fer as it's refered to in the books.Let Bond play Poker in Bond 22 or 23.

What? Poker? I like the game, but come on, it's such a fad right now and such an obvious marketing idea. Where's the class of Baccarat? So he plays Texas Hold 'Em at a swanky casino wearing a tux? Why not just set the damn movie at an Indian casino and make Bond an American already?
