What about SMERSH?

That's a key element in the novel, are the writers going to change that?

View Post

SMERSH is a collective of anarchist hackers and Le Chiffre is not a person but a sentient computer virus gone out of control that Bond has to beat at shove ha'penny (or whatever this is) to prevent it taking over every frickin' computer in the world muh-hah-haha.

Well, I've read considerably more stupid things this afternoon...

View Post

Aw shoot, there goes my movie ticket. lol.

We should stop giving them ideas, or SMERSH will be the next satellite.

The news on Casino Royale just goes from bad to worse...two weeks ago i was excited about the movie...now with this horrible attempt by the producers to appeal to Joe six-pack, I couldn't care less.

Don't jump the gun yet. Maybe this news is only a possibility. After all, everything is subject to change before the cameras begin rolling.

How could you not see this coming. They have stated numerous time that they are wanting to make a more realistic gritty James Bond. I know I live no where near England but Poker is the game of choice at many Casinos now days. Bond playing Poker is fine. Sure it is different than the book but so is a fifty year old on his first mission. (if Brosnan is back.) The game being Poker instead of Baccarat is a realistic change and we get this reaction? This is not a big deal.

True, it may be realistic. On this logic, "plain" is the word I'd use.

I don't think this will hurt the movie in any way, however if no one else likes it then sucks to be Eon for even hasving the idea in the script.

There's still time to it to change in the plot, or could I be wrong?

I agree 100%. We've gone from Daniel Craig as James Bond playing Baccarat (sp?) to Pierce Brosnan as Jimmy Bond playing Poker. Honestly, why would I want to pay $8.50 to watch celebrities play Poker at the theater when I can turn on the TV and watch hours upon hours of the same thing for FREE. Wasn't that always Cubby's big thing with actors, why have someone as Bond if they can see him for free on TV. I think the same thing shoud apply with the card games. I know that I can't turn on the TV and watch Baccarat, but I can watch Poker 24/7 if I chose too (which I won't).

It doesn't seem that terrible, but I just don't see the point. All the latest Bond rumours have been pretty disappointing. I was excited by the prospect of a younger Bond and a change of pace, but every rumour since then has been boring. I'm done believing any rumours at all, whether or not they've been "confirmed". I haven't seen the sources, I don't know where this is coming from, so I'll wait for EON to say something definite, thanks. I think a lot of people are just getting impatient and making stuff up. How else could a "Brosnan/Cavill" rumour get started?

This is one of the more horrifying things that I've heard lately.

For God's sake, this GUTS the tension of the casino scene from the novel, not the least of which is the scene of Bond going bust and receiving aid from Leiter's own personal "Marshall Plan."

Baccarat is far more about betting, meaning what to bet and when, and the "blackjack-esque" component of the game is almost secondary. The tension of the game and quite honestly, the class of it, is what makes it perfect for Bond. Poker is a fantastic game, one that I play weekly, and yet it's not one that I ever foresaw for OO7 in any capacity.

Bond is ESCAPIST entertainment. He's supposed to do things that we don't, as a rule, GET to do (women, cars, gadgets, high-stakes gambling, etc.). Putting Bond into our worlds, instead of letting us enter HIS by reading the books, seeing the movies, etc. is in my mind, a mistake.

Good post. *This* is the heart of the problem, surely. Most people have played poker (even if not this particular version). Most people have not played baccarat, which has an air of elegance and sophistication and mystery to it.

I really don't care if they use baccarat or poker. As long as the scene is enteratining and intruiging, and is set in a fancy casino I'll be perfectly happy.

Would it not be an exciting twist if Bond brushes up on his Baccarat skills so he can clean out Le Chiffre only to have him change the game to Texas Hold'Em a game Bond is somewhat unfamiliar with. Bond would have to learn the game as it was being played and Felix could even come along and help him as he's from Texas and it would make sense that he had played the game. :)

Big mistake. Should have kept the original idea. They are just trying to wrangle in new fans because [what they are replacing it with] is so big right now.

Phase one of destroying what should be a good film: Activated

'nuff said. Way to go the route of Jim Bond. When you Americanize Bond, you fail. Good job EON/Sony.

I'm still not fully convinced of poker in CR, but I did recall Connery played a video game in NSNA. If we'd had CBn then I wonder what kinds of reactions that had gotten.

Nice.

I think the writers will have to do something dramatic like that to make this work. But I think it can work.

Maybe.

I hope.

As long as they can make poker fit into the story well, intruiging, tense, all of the elements Casino Royale, I couldn't care less if they use Baccarat or Uno.

Bond could play ping pong with the villain and I would still find it exciting. It's the confrontation and the duel of wits, not the actual game being played.

Once again Bond bandwagoning (on a bandwagon that's already collapsed too), instead of leading.

Incredibly dumb. :)

This would make a perfect Gilbert Goffried What the *beep* moment on VH1:

" James Bond playing poker!! What's next? 007 giving up vodka martinis for wine coolers??!! Hey, Bond producers....WHAT THE *BEEP*!!! "

(anyone who's seen the I Love The 80's Strikes Back series on VH1 will know what I'm talking about)

But it would still be nice for Baccarat to be in CR, just for the sake of the book.

That's exactly my feeling on this development. I can't stand watching this stuff on TV, and I can guarantee that I won't enjoy watching James Bond play it either.

We agree on something!
I like to play poker, but I have zero interest in watching others play it, and it pisses me off when ESPN wastes time showing Poker games instead of Baseball, Football and Basketball!

I know this may seem like the James Bond version of blasphemy, but I have no interest in watching some long :) card game in a Bond film!
I certainly understand that a card game is a major plot-line of the Casino Royale novel, so I understand that certainly there will be a card game or two in the film. But I will be bored out of my mind if it is a really long scene!

Not to sure what all the complaining is about. Bond cashing in on contemporary fads that can make them look really dated in the future is not new *cough* *cough* LALD, TMWTGG, MR, AVTAK, LTK, etc. Or even NSNA :)
