Poker???!!! What the ??!! Why don't we just put Bond in a ten-gallon cowboy hat and some Wrangler jeans?!!! I hope to god, this isn't true!!!
That's exactly my feeling on this development. I can't stand watching this stuff on TV, and I can guarantee that I won't enjoy watching James Bond play it either.

Though I think this points something of a dent in the young Bond playing cards in the 80s theory...obviously they could play poker but it's my understanding that Texas Hold Em wasn't really popular until recently (or at least until a few years ago). Nothing like a good pop culture reference to help the young'ns relate. (I'm 18, I'm obviously really old. I know that none of my friends knew what baccarat was until I explained it though.)
I like baccarat myself...but I guess Hold Em makes for an interesting scene - certainly a longer one. I don't really see Bond playing a game called Texas Hold Em but I guess it is a mission...This isn't really good or bad for me, just more or less expected.
All the same, good to have some news.
Nice job, CBn!

Guess it's not going to be as faithful as I'd hoped.

Wow, I'm still trying to get used to Bond at a card game where we won't hear the expressions "Banco suivi" or "Sept a la banc!" Now it'll probably be " Your bluffing!!" or " I fold!!" lol

Why don't we have Bond wearing a baseball cap, driving a pick-up truck and speaking with a Texas drawl while we are at it.

I expected more. This is seriously disappointing. The series is once again a follower instead of a trendsetter.

Yeah that makes me mad...I always speak French when I play cards since I read CR....now it'll seem so unsophisticated.

Yet another example of EON's pandering to that all-important younger audience. I can watch people play Texas Hold Em on television at any given time or at any Eagles club or VFW hall. Why would I want to see it on the big screen being played by the world's greatest secret agent, who has made his name at more exotic games?

The most disappointing news ever, except for the possible return of Pierce Brosnan. I seriously don't want to pay $8.50 to watch two things that don't interest me at all: Pierce Brosnan playing Bond and Poker.

I have no problem with this. I know people will figure they're just doing it because poker is so popular right now, but, the decision does make sense. If we're actually going to see the details of the play, more people know the poker rules than the baccarat rules, making it easier to follow. Plus poker takes much more skill than baccarat, which, let's face it, is basically glorified blackjack. It always bugged me that "Bond's game" depended so much more on luck than skill. And, more strategy means more potential drama. |
In any event, nice to have some news that has more validity than random people randomly speculating on random websites! Thanks, zencat.

A lot of us do. A lot of us also know how to play basketball or baseball. I don't want to see James Bond doing that. I want him doing something exotic or playing an exotic game, not something I can do or Ben Affleck or the guy who plays Screech can do on television. This is great news as I actually know how to play Poker!

While trying to thwart a nefarious scheme of altering the outcome of a reality show.
I'm reminded of Godzilla fandom who refer to the American Godzilla film as Gino (Godzilla In Name Only).
I guess I'll have to start referring to CR 2006 as CRino. Crino Royale if you will.

I know some fans will freak at this news, but I think this is a change for the better. This news excits me.
Zencat, why do you think this is a change for the better? I'm not disagreeing, I'm just curious as to why you think so... Is it because baccarat is a little esoteric for the average moviegoer?
Personally, I'm not sure how to feel about this. In the context of the story, it could work as well -- or better -- than baccarat. On the other hand, poker doesn't quite have the glamour and style that baccarat does. And, as other posters have implied, this does seem like an obvious attempt to cash in on the (already fading) poker craze.

Kinda sad. Learning the basics of baccarat and then reading about Bond playing against people was one of the strongest aspects of Casino Royale.
Oh well. It's no surprise...
