Aussie star Bana chosen as next James Bond: report
Sat Jul 31, 6:57 PM ET Add Top Stories - AFP to My Yahoo!
LONDON (AFP) - Australian actor Eric Bana, star of films including "The Hulk" and "Troy", is the surprise new choice to take over as James Bond, a report said.
The beefy 35-year-old had beaten off competition from British actors such as Jude Law and Ewan McGregor to take over the role of the super-spy in the long-running series of films, the News of the World said.
Current Bond, Irish actor Pierce Brosnan, has stepped down after four films following a row with producers, the Sunday tabloid title said.
Bana was still negotiating with the series producers but they were hopeful he would take over for the 21st title in the series, due to begin filming later this year, the paper cited an unnamed "insider" as saying.
"Eric is the guy they want but he has a reputation for being demanding. They want to modernize Bond and turn him into a youthful, suave and modern hero to compete with the likes of Spiderman and Keanu (Reeves) in the Matrix," the source said.
Bana was formerly a popular comedian in Australia before grabbing attention in 2000 film "Chopper", in which he played a real-life character, a famous -- and famously violent -- Australian criminal, Mark "Chopper" Read.
He has subsequently appeared in a string of US blockbusters, most recently playing Hector in swords-and-sandals epic "Troy".
The James Bond films, based on the novels of Ian Fleming, have proved hugely successful ever since the first title, 1962's "Dr No", in which Sean Connery took the lead role.
* I say

BUT to be FAIR! We will see if it was Pierce OR Cubby's Kids that made so many crappy ones because they took over on Goldeneye.
DAY ONE: Hire John Glen for Eric's First 007 film

Clive Owen has the look. Hugh Jackman has the look. Even James Purefoy - but Bana?? No way!
However, if Bana does get the part, I will certainly be willing to give him a chance. Who knows, he may surprise me. At least I could derive a little peverse pleasure from the fact that Moomoo's Hugh Jackman ramblings were proven wrong

Only watch Bond films do you then?.Watch this man in 'Chopper'.......Great film and a great performance.
The man can act.........
For me,if not Jackman(the fav),my personal choice would be Butler, who I think has the looks, height, build, charm, toughness etc to be the best since Connery...........

I say give Eric Bana a chance before you crucify him.
I've read quite a few posts here from fans saying that they won't go see the next Bond film if Bana is Bond. Personally, I think that your curiosity will get the better of you.
Let's wait and see...assuming AICN is correct.

He's not absolutely unsuitable, and anyway the proof of the pudding etc blah etc yawn. Interesting performance in Black Hawk Down, too. Ah well, they're going to need someone.

With Jim, not suited to the role idealy, however it could be interesting. Anyone who's seen the real Chopper and the flick knows Bana is good at what he does.

Was it? What was said?Interesting, same thing reported on oz's Channel 9 news tonight at 6.
I missed it, but caught their news bulletin a bit later, but it didn't mention it. I thought they'd do something on it, since it's their main news story at ninemsn at the moment.

IT'S incredible! Hulk star Eric Bana is to supermutate into James Bond, leaving a string of 007 wannabes green with envy.
Aussie Eric, 35, who shot to fame as the buttonpopping monster, is to take over from Pierce Brosnan as the suave spy with a licence to kill.
He beat British actors Jude Law, Orlando Bloom and Ewan McGregor and fellow Aussie Heath Ledger to the coveted role.
Shooting
Eric is still in negotiations with movie bosses, but producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson are confident he'll be the star of the 21st Bond movie.
Thought to be titled The Man With The Red Tattoo, it sees 007 on a mission to save the world from a killer virus. Filming could start as early as September.
An insider said: "Eric is the guy they want but he has a reputation for being demanding. They want to modernise Bond and turn him into a youthful, suave and modern hero to compete with the likes of Spiderman and Keanu in The Matrix."
Brosnan, 50, announced he was quitting the role this week after starring in four Bond movies.
Our source said: "Rumour is he fell out with the producers after demanding more money."
Brosnan complained back in March that he hadn't been asked to play 007 in the 21st film.
He said: "They know where to find me if they want me. I'd love to do another bit. If not, I won't be out of work. The producers asked me back when we finished the last Bond film.
"I think now there is a sense of paralysis and they're not quite sure how to proceed.
"But I'll always be James Bond because that is a role you live with for life."
Melbourne-born Eric shot to fame in Chopper, Black Hawk Down and Troy, but it was his role in The Hulk that catapulted him to superstardom.
Fantastic
Even though he was a relatively new face as far as Hollywood was concerned, director Ang Lee never had anyone else in mind to play Bruce Banner.
He says: "I always wanted Eric. I'd seen him in Chopper and thought he was a great actor. He was fantastic in Black Hawk Down and was always my choice."
Eric is married to TV publicist Rebecca Gleeson and the couple have two children, five-year-old son Klaus and two-year-old daughter Sophia.
Their daddy is about to become the man with a golden future...

First Picture

Second Picture

Third Picture

And I can't say as I have been too impressed with the other candidates. I would have respected the choice of Hugh Jackman because of his popularity, but that would been a serious trade-down from Brosnan.
Bana, on the other hand, I could get excited about.

I just saw the same report. I just made this thread: Eric Bana IS James Bond/Fox News - 8/1/04Fox News just announced that Eric Bana was the new James Bond as well. Said the information was coming "out of England". No more specifics but gave the caveat that it might be a ploy to get Brosnan to sign for less money. Anyway, not impressed. saw the guy in the Hulk, thought he and the film were awful. And he doesn't look "Bondish" enough. Ah well. Maybe he'll be the kind of actor who wants to be James Bond for a while and not just do Bond so he can do the "important films" and be a "serious actor" That would be welcome.

I remain convinced Jackman is signed as Bond. 99.9% convinced. If Eon comes out next week and confirms Bana as Bond, well, I'll have to eat a hell of a lot of humble pie.

The whole affair is very depressing. I hope and pray Eon stop this charade and announce the new Bond. Do it before the sale of MGM to Warner or Sony. This has gone on way too long. Any respect I had for Eon and the Broccoli's has long gone. It would appear they really couldn't give a damn. They remain silent and love all the press attention. Very, very sad.
