Drew "Moriarty" McWeeney posted further comments on CHUD.com's message board, which is sort of like AICN's board, except the users have coherent opinions and grammar skills (also, if you think opinion on DAD here is sour, you should peruse CHUD for a while).

Anyway, he's backed off the initial report somewhat:

I'm not personally sold on the Eric Bana thing, but I'm hearing from many places now that it's pretty much a done deal. Guess we'll see what happens if MGM does end up being sold. Time/Warner may have very different ideas about the series...

He also adds another intriguing piece of putative inside information:

Clive Owen will never be James Bond. MGM hates him, and KING ARTHUR didn't do him any favors. EON films hates him, and KING ARTHUR didn't do him any favors. It's time for people to let it go. And KING ARTHUR didn't do him any favors.

Interesting. Thank you for posting this, Bryan Harris.

And if I didn't say it before, welcome to CBn. :)

I think he's a good actor. I'd give him a chance and have an open mind...

...Bana stated in an interview that he "wouldn't do it" -- that's nothing he's thinking about, planning on, in talks about, etc. His agent also disavows any talks with Eon etc. So it looks like you have your work cut out for you. :)

Yup, I believe there might be a Quick News link about this. I hope this rumor dies down quick.

Dang! I was fired up for Bond 21 starring an unexpected hire,Eric bana...Now we return our attention to actors....who are either not interested (Owen) or too pricey and commited elsewhere(Jackman). And then there's too old and boring(Paul) or just plain bored(Brosnan) or too young(Farrel,Bloom,Ledger). Or too short/wrong(Farrel,Bloom,Ledger,Mcgregor) :)

I kinda liked the idea of Eric bana as James Bond...it showed boldness(had it been true) on thier part...I think he's got talent, charisma and a great voice for the role;he can be convincingly threatening/dangerous too. Watch the DVD extras on Black Hawk Down and the interviews...he hasn't had a chance to show his Bondian chops;he's played Americans in two out of three of his major releases. Anyway, I think it could work...Anyone else agree? :)

Bana did strike me as an interesting choice and would've liked to have seen how it turned out. He doesn't look like Bond to me, but that doesn't mean he couldn't win me over with his performance. Loved him in Troy.

Tarl, I agree with everything you said. Eric Bana would have been an interesting choice, to say the least. Let's remember, gang, Ian Fleming thought Sean Connery was wrong for the part. He wanted Cary Grant, who would have been great as Bond...in 1942, not '62.
Bana would have been an inspired choice on EON's part. But by now, we all know that they're not one to take chances. Ah well, I'll spend another few minutes imagining Bana as Bond. Then it's back to "Everything Or Nothing" on the PS2 for a 007 fix. The waiting game continues...

Frankly, I can't understand why this rumour filtered through more media than any other one, so far. It was reported on newspapers, radio, TV, magazines... all rather excessive for an unfounded rumour. I'm looking forward to the commotion when Bond #6 is officially announced.

Anyhow, I stumbled onto yesterday's paper at work tonight, and what do I find on the front page?

And here's the Page Two article...

I apologise that the bottom got cut off... the paper's too big for my scanner.

BOTTOM OF THE FIRST COLUMN:

Farrell were mooted.
Last week Brosnan finally ended rumours about his involvement in the next Bond film.
"That's it. I've said all I've got to say on the world of James Bond.

BOTTOM OF THE SECOND COLUMN:
in the footsteps of George Lazenby.
Lazenby starred in one Bond film, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Others who played Bond are Roger Moore and Timothy Dalton.

CAPTION TO THE MAIN IMAGE:
Australian actor Eric Bana, who is being tipped as the next James Bond

CBS's Morning Show also announced Bana as Bond this morning. Is this just a case of media feeding frenzy, where one outlet announces and the rest follow citing the original announcement? Or is there some truth to this rumor?

According to Bana himself, it's all rubbish.

Oh, I can tell you: it's the first new rumour that came up after that Brosnan interview.

The whole "Brosnan Out" sage was more or less ignored by German media until now. Some two months ago, there were some small reports about the possibility of Brosnan being fired, but not much. After that interview, it was in every paper, in every gossip TV show, heck, you could even read it in every teletext. And the same goes for this Bana rumour. Not a word about Jackman, and most of the other guys only get brief mentions (sometimes Jude Law and Ewan McGregor, and - those idiots - most of them jumped on the Geoffrey Moore story... :) )

But it's summertime and not much happening in the world at the moment, they need something to fill their papers. And Bond has always been good for that.... :)

Too true there Zencat. When I was a street paramedic I would read accounts of accidents I had worked in the local newspaper and wonder if I was at the right scene. Their information was that far off. They even once labelled a picture of a police officer at one scene as a "State Trooper" when you could plainly read his shoulder patch declaring "County Police" on it. Either they're brainless or just too careless. That's why I don't take for gospel anything of the media's political they all have an agenda, with Fox it leans mostly right, with the others it leans mostly left. You got to watch all of them and also scan the internet then make up your mind. It's a lot of work but worth it considering the alternative. (Rant over)

Anyway, back to the thread. So who knows who's gonna be the next Bond. Two weeks ago Julian McMahon was named (interestingly enough he was named this week as Dr. Doom in the Fantastic Four film) last week Brosnan officially called it quits (or did he?) and now Bana is James Bond, or he's not. To quote Dr Evil "Somebody throw me a frickin' bone here! I'm the boss. Need info!"

For those interested in an actual clip of Bana denying the rumor, here it is from the horse's mouth.

I voted "no" in the "do you want Bana?" poll, but had he been selected, I would have put my trust in him because I trust the people making the decision. I would say the same about pretty much all the contenders, except Ledger or Bloom. I didn't think he was out of the "acceptable" range; to me, the Bond folks have earned the right for that to be considered a wide range.

Spielberg Postpones Film Over Terrorist Fears

Legendary director Steven Spielberg has postponed his latest movie Vengeance because he's concerned it will become a target for Islamic terrorists. Production on Vengeance - about the successful hunt for the 17 Palestinians who attacked the Israeli Olympic team at the 1972 Munich games - was set to start in June, but the Jewish Schindler's List director is anxious because one of the terrorists has never been found. Spielberg's spokesman Marvin Levy told website Pagesix.Com, "Steven is getting script pages every day. Troy's Eric Bana is still set to star in the movie, scheduled for a 2006 release. But the postponement has resulted in Oscar-winning Ben Kingsley dropping out. There were a lot of sources for this movie from many mediums." ...

Perhaps they need more time for Bana to film Bond 21?

How utterly pathetic. This is precisely the kind of of scaredy-cat (yet at the same time monstrously ego-driven) mentality that saw MAD MAX 4 scrapped because Mel Gibson and co. were worried about filming in Namibia because they felt that "terrorists" might come and whack them. Utterly, utterly pathetic. :) :)

If true, of course (and the same goes for the MAD MAX 4 story). If nothing more than tabloid speculation, scratch my above rant. :)

I kind of like Bana's denial on the Teen People story in the main news section. This response kind of makes Clive Owen's responses to the Bond question seem warm and fuzzy.

Can't anybody appreciate having their name linked with the most successful series of all time any more? Troy and The Hulk didn't exactly burn up the box office.

Bana and Owen are the only ones who don't seem to like being linked to Bond. I don't see the problem except that some people don't want to believe them.

More positive (though vague) responses from Jackman, Law, McGregor and Gruffudd.

[It's getting a bit of a pet subject of mine, but Troy's worldwide box office has been very good. Van Helsing didn't do as well as expected but didn't bomb. King Arthur does appear to be bombing even in the UK]
