I think we should do a second poll, to see how opinion has shifted over the past several months
I second that.

So let's do it already. Does anybody have the ability to make a poll? We could just call it "The Next James Bond--Redux", or something like that.

Let's not forget the fact that the original poll was made before Brosnan's departure was confirmed, and I remember a lot of people who refused to endorse any candidate but Brosnan. A lot of his fans may have voted for "none of the above" just to show their support, which probably explains why about a quarter of the votes are in that column.
Anyway, I would put these choices on the list:
A Clive Owen
B Hugh Jackman
C Dougray Scott
D Other celebrity
E Unknown actor
I've (1) tried to eliminate all the joke candidates like Hugh Grant, Robbie Williams, Colin Farrell, etc.; (2) taken out obvious long-shots like Ewan McGregor, Colin Salmon, etc.; and (3) removed the minor candidates like Jack Davenport, Dominic West, etc., who only end up garnering one percent of the total vote anyway.
The object is to include only serious, likely-to-happen candidates (namely, Hugh, Clive, and Dougray) by name, and lump in all the others under "other". If the "other" column is really high, we could rework the poll, but I doubt that would happen.
As you see, I also include a fifth choice, unknown actor, which refers specifically to a non-celebrity -- somebody none of us has ever heard of, like Connery before Dr. No.

I think the contenders are
Clive Owen
Dougray Scott
James Purefoy
Ioan Gruffudd
Gerard Butler
A total unknown, or rank outsider like Jack Davenport or Dominic West
Adrian Paul hasn't been a contender since the early 90s.
Colin Salmon and Robbie Williams were publicity stunts.
Colin Farrell has very clearly stated on the record that he does not want the role and does not regard himself as a suitable candidate for it (and suggested they get an unknown).
Christian Bale is Batman.
Ewan McGregor, Jude Law and Hugh Grant are world-famous movie stars, and as likely as Russell Crowe or Brad Pitt.
Hugh Jackman has just signed a massive deal with Disney to produce and star in musicals. While it's non-exclusive, the chances of him juggling this, the X-Men franchise and playing James Bond seem supremely unlikely. I think he has always been as likely as Ewan McGregor, Hugh Grant or Brad Pitt myself and that it's pure wishful thinking on fans' behalfs - but he could always be added to the list, too.

BONDING SESSION PIERCE Brosnan was his usual charming self when he caught up with his favourite gossip columnists. The dashing ex-007 star had us swooning (enough already - Ed) at the post-ceremony dinner. His date for the night was his son Sean, 19, who is studing acting at the Central School Of Speech And Drama in London. Lucky Sean was introduced to Miramax boss Harvey Weinstein - not something every drama student gets to do. Pierce - who very kindly said to Jessica when the flash on the camera took time to warm up: "I'll just stand here and stroke your back while we wait" - revealed he wasn't serious about tipping Colin Farrell as the next Bond star. "That was only a joke. I can't really see that happening," he said. "I think Gerard Butler would be great. Colin Salmon would be brilliant but they don't have the bottle. "I know what you're like - you'll say to the next Bond star that he's the best one ever. You won't be loyal to me!" |
