License to Kill!

In terms of the Connery era, my favourite theme song is From Russia With Love.

For the Moore era I would go with For Your Eyes Only.

Wow, I don't think I can pick one definitive song. However, there are definitely a couple tiers as far as where the different songs sit.

"From Russia with Love," "The Spy Who Loved Me," and "Live and Let Die" stand in their own category at the top. "You Only Live Twice" and "Tomorrow Never Dies" get honorable mentions though.

The Spy Who Loved Me. If it counted (as it could have easily been used as the main title song in TND instead of the ending theme), I would pick "Surrender" because I think it's pretty much the best and most Bond-ian song the Bond franchise has had.

It was the main title until very late when it was switched for Sheryl Crow's song. But agreed, it is easily the better of the two.

I'm an unabashed fan of the 1960s Bond themes, particularly Goldfinger and Thunderball. Of the more recent themes, I'd say my favourite is "You Know My Name". (Although, of course, that view may change when I hear the theme tune for "Skyfall".)

And I wondered recently, and rather morbidly, which tracks I'd have played at my funeral. I'm tempted to say "We Have All The Time In The World" (not any more, I haven't!) and "You Only Live Twice" (more in hope than expectation, I think!) .

I voted A view to a kill, first Bond movie i saw, and the first tune i heard. I also really like : OHMSS, LTK & DAD (i know i'm in the minority here), but it's something totally different than what you would expect of a bond theme song. Can't wait for Adèle's Skyfall.

Where is the thread for ranking the main title songs? And the thread for ranking the title sequences? I couldn't find either. So I'm posting my personal rankings of main title songs here, excluding the James Bond theme from Doctor No as I don't think it can be ranked. My favourite is, of all the things, Garbage's "The World Is Not Enough". I don't care what anybody says, I love the song as much the movie. It has a spooky and mysterious feel to it, an unusual rhythm and interesting lyrics. I voted for it.

1) The World Is Not Enough - Garbage, David Arnold
2) All Time High (Octopussy) - Rita Coolidge, John Barry
3) The Living Daylights - A-ha, John Barry
4) A View To A Kill - Duran Duran, John Barry
5) Nobody Does It Better (TSWLM) - Carly Simon, Marvin Hamlisch
6) You Know My Name (Casino Royale 2006) - Chris Cornell, David Arnold
7) From Russia With Love (instrumental) - John Barry
8) Diamonds Are Forever - Shirley Bassey, John Barry
9) On Her Majesty's Secret Service (instrumental) - John Barry
10) For Your Eyes Only - Sheena Easton, Bill Conti
11) You Only Live Twice - Nancy Sinatra, John Barry
12) GoldenEye - Tina Turner, Eric Serra
13) Goldfinger - Shirley Bassey, John Barry
14) Die Another Day - Madonna, David Arnold
15) Thunderball - Tom Jones, John Barry
16) Live And Let Die - Paul McCartney, George Martin
17) Moonraker - Shirley Bassey, John Barry
18) Never Say Never Again - Lani Hall, Michel Legrand
19) Licence To Kill - Gladys Knight, Michael Kamen
20) Tomorrow Never Dies - Sheryl Crow, David Arnold
21) The Man With the Golden Gun - Lulu, John Barry
22) Another Way To Die - Jack White & Alicia Keys, David Arnold

The Living Daylights... I could listen to it a million times. It's so Bond and yet so sultry and 80s pop, I love it.

1) "The Name's Bond...James Bond" - David Arnold (the original Monty Norman arrangement is good, but too dated and overused throughout the Connery/Lazenby era. I like a lot of Barry's revisits to the main theme over the years, but this one is still probably my favourite)

2) You Know My Name

3) Nobody Does it Better

4) Thunderball

5) Goldfinger

6) GoldenEye

7) Licence to Kill (really growing on me in the last few years)

8) A View to a Kill

9) You Only Live Twice

10) The Living Daylights

Beware, for this list is tentative and ever-changing. I really loved YKMN something fierce (and I did in fact grow up with the series and I had all of the songs up-to-and-including TND from the time I was 8, so I'm not just a n00b). Maybe it's just a generational thing, but it seemed incredibly contemporary while utterly Bondian at the same time.

This isn't actually a main theme song, but I love the song "If you ask me to" by Patti Labelle. It plays at the credits of License to Kill and I think it is a beautiful song.

A View To A Kill.
The Living Daylights gets an honourable mention as it's also the first record I ever bought.

Incidentally, I prefer the alternate version of TLD, I also LOVE Blondie's For Your Eyes Only and still think its relevant enough to use today in the Craig era.

I love All Time High from Octopussy. The end of the teaser where Moore says "Fill her up" and the music starts is just perfect.

I can't say for certain which is my absolute favorite, as that seems to alternate between a few of the songs depending on the occasion. I'll do a top 5, though:
  • "Licence to Kill" - Gladys Knight
  • "For Your Eyes Only" - Sheena Easton
  • "The Living Daylights" - a-ha
  • "GoldenEye" - Tina Turner
  • "A View to a Kill" - Duran Duran

"Live and Let Die" is at the top of my list (but that has a lot to do with my even greater-than-Bond love for Paul & The Beatles.)

I also love "OHMSS (Main Title)", "A View to a Kill", "You Only Live Twice", "Nobody Does It Better".    OHMSS  & YOTL are my  two favorite Bond soundtracks, as well.

I like most of the themes, but there are a handful that I don't care for, particularly "Another Way to Die".  And I'm a huge Jack White fan; I'm from the Detroit area and have seen him in concert 4 times, and yet I still consider that song easily the worst Bond theme.  Well, maybe second-worst to "Die Another Day", but that has more to do with Madonna.  I think the reason I dislike "Another Way to Die" so much is that my expectations were incredibly high since Jack White was writing & performing it, so it was a clear let down when I first heard it.  Had Meg played drums, I'm sure it would have been tops on my list....

6 years ago I had 'A View To A Kill' as my favourite - and it still is, but 'Skyfall' is a good second, just knocking 'You Know My Name' to third.

Another Way to Die is a disaster all around. Poor writing, poor rhythm, poor melody. Nothing about it says Bond. Alicia Keys wasn't bad and she actually covered it by herself in live performances and it is much better. But the song itself is just bad. Too bad we didn't get Amy Winehouse's song....
