By the way, all Newman fans should check out his score for the new Spielberg film "Bridge of Spies", available today. The use of choir in this might signal how Newman uses the choir in SPECTRE.

Without giving too much away, can you tell us about one particular Spectre scene and how you wrote for it?
You know what, I don’t know what I can and can’t say! It’s too easy for me to give things away, let me think… ok so there is a chase scene of course, and the thing with chase sequences is they can be very conventional, right? You think they’re all the same, so it would be very easy to just write something conventional to go with the chase. There is one chase sequence in Spectre and I am so pleased with the piece. It would be very easy to overwrite and do this big loud, thumping piece but you’ll have to see what we did.

Interesting comment. I hope he's not talking about the Austrian sequence though, I was actually hoping for a very traditional chase sequence with that one.

Not forgetting. I just don't think it's likely to be that bit.

Nor do I, I think we might even get the choir back for that.

Hopefully Arnold will be back for Bond 25. Newman might be a better composer, but at least Arnold understood Bond and used the theme song in the score, something which Newman keeps avoiding (at least based on those samples).

I hope you appreciate how difficult it was for me - with my OC tendencies and all - to resist listening to that playlist posted above.
Fortunately I am even more OC about not listening to soundtrack music until after I've seen the film.

I've only heard the clip on 'Classical FM' - I'm soundtrack free until after the event too. :

Arnold is extremely passionate about the history and legacy of Bond music... Newman maybe isn't, and just sees it as another job to get through. (perhaps indicated by his re-using some of Skyfall's stuff verbatim... even in these samples, like in "Eternal City". Disappointing)

Keeping that level of consistency between different film scores is common in other franchises, but unusual for Bond. Newman definitely approached this film as though it was an extension of its predecessor.

Nearly finished the soundtrack now. I'm really dissapointed if i'm being honest. There's a few stand out tracks on there but most of it is either filler or reused Skyfall music. I really like Los Muertos Vivos Estan, and Vauxhall Bridge, Backfire, Hinx and that's probably about it. You know, i'm sorta sick of them timidly using the Bond theme throughout - just to remind us that it's an actual Bond film. Then when its finally blasting the credits are rolling. Pretty sick of it. I could get away with it in Casino Royale because he was supposed to be earning the theme, which I loved the idea of but nine years down the line? I mean, I completely understand that the Bond theme became overused in the Brosnan era but honestly, are they still that scared to use it? Stop dancing around it and bloody use it properly. Really dissapointed, and I hope there's some hidden musical gems in the final movie because if Craig does leave, then he would've gone his entire tenure without having a truly golden Bond theme moment. A real shame. Thanks Mr Newman.
I bet you that The Force Theme is all over the The Force Awakens.
I know that there are many different things that make up a Bond film, but they've been saying in Interviews about celebrating the Bond movies, and wanting to make the best Bond movie they can and it's as if they've been missing this ONE thing all the way down the line that they never ever address.

Listening to Snow Plane. Damn, what a fun, propulsive cue! Classic Newman brass chorales, and some juicy dissonances.

Too bad there's no Gunbarrel. Pretty curious to know what Newman's got going for that...
Los Muertos Vivos Estan is great though

Have a feeling there'll be a lot of music not heard on the album. Gunbarrel, helicopter fight etc.

I remember there was a slick bond theme for skyfall that was silva's capture not being on the soundtrack. Why they dont include everything is beyond me.....make zero sense. I sure and hoping the gun barrel theme will be a refreshing, original piece of music. The gun barrel better WOW me.

At least with the Gunbarrel, it's pretty easy to rip it from the film as there's not really any background noise getting in the way.
I'd love an expanded soundtrack though.
Snow Plan is excellent (and makes nice subtle usage of the Bond theme)

I really don't understand why Sony doesn't go ahead and release the score digitally in the US since its widely available overseas. The best defense against pirated versions is to go on offense and strike when hot. Just release it!

This 'music' is some of the blandest I have ever heard. I'm already annoyed I spent money to buy this thing.
After Skyfall my expectations were low but this is lazy, tired, uninspired underscore with barely a melodic moment to bring you out of the coma it induces upon you. Literally, I realise that notes strung together in any fashion can constitute 'melody' technically, but this score is utterly bereft of anything i would deem close to a memorable, interesting or even blandly safe 'proper' melody. Nevermind the Skyfall-isms when AT LEAST a third of the score is just electronic-y new age ambience, soaked in reverb and delay to presumably provide 'atmosphere'.
The wishy-washy strings of the barely there love themes at least are pleasant enough in an entirely forgettable way, but when the most stand out moment is an instrumental of one of the worst Bond themes I can recall, you have serious problems.
Forget Barry, Arnold, or any pick of composer that comes to mind, I genuinely believe I could conjure up something more stirring than this.
And yes, I know I have not heard it in the context of the film. At least it will be easy to ignore, if it even registers at all. I'd say bring back Arnold for sure, but at this point I'd take nearly anyone... A remote control Bond score? Sure. It can't get much worse than this.
Oh, and it was never going to happen, but I'd have loved to hear what Arnold was able to do with his Quantum theme in relation to Spectre...
