Indeed. Some media are writing up that Waltz is Hannes Oberhauser, but that's certainly not information from EON or anyone else, so I'd advise real caution on that. As Harmsway says, the best information so far is from the Mail on Sunday report - so we should assume it's the newly created Franz Oberhauser, until further notice.

Given Waltz's age, it makes sense that he'd be Hannes Oberhauser's son rather than Hannes himself, given Hannes' role in Bond's childhood.

Is it possible that a certain cache of Nazi gold bankrolled Blofeld's early criminal activities? Additionally, is it possible that Bond begins by investigating Hannes Oberhauser's death, previously presumed to be an accident, and now revealed to be a murder, and *that* is what the "cryptic message from Bond's past" mentioned in the summary refers to?

This is just vague ramblings here, but perhaps the subtext of SPECTRE will be the relationship between fathers (or surrogate fathers) and sons and their brothers, as with the maternal undercurrent in SKYFALL? Just throwing this around since people are mentioning Christoph Waltz playing Hannes Oberhauser's son-- Hannes, like Kincade being another father figure to Bond.

This shouldn't be surprising with Mendes's affinity for Shakespeare, and so many of the Bard's plays boiling down to this basic human drama, that goes all the way back to Oedipus killing King Laius.

It fits. After all, we've shifted from a maternal M to a paternal M. Makes sense that SPECTRE would stress the "surrogate father" aspect of it all.

I can definitely see that being a figure in the context of the film as well as thematically.

The whole name - Franz Oberhauser - is confirmed. The soundbites they officially distributed are named that way.

It really fits rather well and it harkens back to the original paradigm of the Bond films. St. George needs his dragon. Oedipus needs his Laios.

Exactly. And I hadn't thought it would be possible to recapture that vibe without actually going there. I was...mistaken.

Wonderful! Something to compete with the pool scene from Skyfall. Hope we get to see a dinner of sorts in that restaurant. Or a cable car fight.

Oh my god. The news is getting better by the day. Absolutely perfect location! I've been hoping that this will be some kind of spirutual remake of On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Among all the Bond films it's the one that would feel more suitable to a new generation. Even though the 1969 film remains a stone cold classic to me, it's worth thinking about how better it could've been with an already established Bond with a few films under his belt.

Lots more information here. There is a bit about Dennis Gassner choosing the Ice Q and cable car at Sölden instead of the Skywalk at Steiner, which is interesting and gives us a clue as to what they will be doing there. Remember that helicopter crash that was talked about.

Some other interesting notes:

  • Daniel Craig will only be in Obertilliach for three days of close-ups from 10th January, so that's predominantly second unit action
  • the Obertilliach sequence sounds huge, including gunfire, explosions, helicopters, snowmobiles - so may well be the finale
  • this boat builder has made 12 plätte boats especially for the film: http://www.boote-sal...ontakt-176.html
  • as previously suggested, Bond is likely to row one of the women across the lake in the boat

It seems from other reports that there will be a car chase along the the Ötztal Glacier Road and through the Rosi-Mittermeier Tunnel near Sölden. Some photos of the road in summer: http://www.soelden.c...ier-road-summer

From what I can figure out in various Austrian articles, the main cast will be at the different locations on the following dates:

  • 4-6 January - Lake Altaussee (assuming it isn't frozen)
  • 7-10 January - Sölden cable car and Ice-Q restaurant
  • 10-13 January - Obertilliach

Plus other bits of principal photography, depending on what the second unit is up to.

I read gunfire, explosions, helicopters, snowmobiles, ..., and I think: Oh God, please, no CGI! Those helis in Skyfall were ridiculous. Easily the worst part in the entire film, for me.

Still, sounds wonderful. 12 boats is a lot of boats. Dying to see what they do with them. A chase on the glacier road? First we´ve heard of it, right? Sounds like a lot of action so far.

12 boats, and Bond has to pass a test on the lake (as we heard before)? It's gotta be race.

The tunnel is called Rosi-Mittermaier-Tunnel? Funny, as she's a former German ski racer and Olympic Gold medalist.
