New Doctor, new Tardis, new companion, new writing, new music, new ethic and new brilliance. If myths and fairytales are the impulse behind this series then I am all up for that as this first episode of Matt Smith's tenure was near stunning. Gone are the Cardiff tics and pop-culture-on-a-budget nods and in comes a basic yet resourceful, wisely fresh and refreshingly wry new take on DOCTOR WHO - one which presents an awareness to WHO the movement, but more importantly, to WHO the TV series. The Tardis is gloriously televisual - a studio-bound, objet d'art cathedral of glassy tat and a throwback to the Davison years rather than the sombre greenhouse that was Tennent's pad.
Russell T Davies blueprint is evident throughout but already the Doctor is presented as less of a man with a life sentence of time and more of an intergalactic prince with alien senses, the confidence of experience and no guilt about scooping up a new assistant (and one whose history may well be 'very intriguing'...the DOCTOR may know more about Amelia Pond than he or us expects).

''It was ridiculous but it felt right: mad, alien, brand new but very old. A+ to the casting director. A+ to Smith.'

Some people need to get a life.... Not just Jeff.
Yeah, tit quota was non-existent. The Daily Mail should get in its time machine and take a look at Peri.

The episode had some terrific moments. I did like the new theme, especially after it gets through the muddy orchestration of the opening few bars - but really Murray, can we just drop the choirs from the incidentals?
Negatives first: flat out didn't like the new logo in the manner it which they are using it. DOCTOR DW WHO. Very unbalanced. The DW should be a closing credits logo not in the opening I think. Unfortunately, yet more story arc signs and portents nonsense! I really hoped Moffat would have dropped this garbage, but sure enough there it was wedged in towards the end. Why does EVERYONE in the universe (aside from the Doctor and a few humans) always know what's coming 12 weeks down the track? And praying to Santa?! Come-on I'm not a religious type but that just stood out as bizarre social commentary, Mr Moff.
Other than that - just plain wonderful! A fine balance between humour and mystery-adventure. Classic moment when he's nicked a fire engine and loved the idea of an unseen room in the house! Actually what did everyone think of the editing during those two moments in the episode where we are given a kind of snapshot recall of what the Doctor or Amy had seen? Reminded me a bit of Guy Richie's HOLMES there and I hope this will become a stylistic device throughout the series. Very nice.
Also nice was the village location rather than suburban London - although it would be nice if new Who could get out of kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms and hospitals! It's all rather domesticated and about as predictable as Pertwee turning up at a research facility to thwart a *surprise* alien invasion! Mind you the previews suggest this might well be the case...
I haven't checked this, but I thought the hospital bore more than a similarity to the one in SPEARHEAD FROM SPACE - in fact Smith getting his clobber from the doctor's change rooms was more than a nod in that direction! Thought Karen Gillan was also excellent and I will have absolutely no difficulty at all keeping my attention on her performance this year!
Looking forward to next week!

On a time and space continuum tangent (is that an oxymoron?) similar to wanting to get to Metebelis III but ending up on Skaro::
Talking of which, strangely enough, I was perusing my RSPB guide book earlier. You know on their website the tit species, because of playground humour, has to be circumnavigated when talked about now.
The old jokes of "I saw a pair of blue tits on the lawn yesterday. It was
a very cold day" does remain titillating though.
(Yes I've had a couple of voddies and coke, so what? )

MATT Smith may have just made his debut as Doctor Who but he's already been immortalised in plastic - TWICE.
The five-inch action figures of the 11th Time Lord have hit shops, with one showing Matt in his torn "crash landing" outfit - seen in Saturday's episode of the new BBC1 series.
Who are ya? ... kids play at being Doc in London
The other shows Matt's new look - a bow tie and tweed jacket - which was copied by young fans outside a toy shop in Brent Cross, North London, yesterday.

So far we've seen her raise a few eyebrows in a mini-skirt and battling aliens in a soaking wet shirt.
But Karen Gillan today defended criticism that Doctor Who producers were 'shamelessly sexing up' the long-running sci-fi show.
The model-turned-actress, 22, appeared on This Morning where she spoke about her new role telling hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield that the sexy looks are all part of the show.
Defence: New Doctor Who actress Karen Gillan said the sexy look of her character Amy Pond is just part of the plot
Interview: The model-turned-actress told hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby about the audition process and her debut on the show
After Holly Willoughby told her 'We think you’re the sexiest companion there’s been!, she said: 'She wears lots of short skirts…and it got a few column mentions! It’s interesting, it’s part of the plot and it’s not that bad.'
Following her debut at the weekend, Miss Gillan's appearance was labelled 'slutty' by a small section of fans who objected to her first appearance on screen in a policewoman's outfit with a tiny skirt.
In one scene her character tells the Doctor, played by Matt Smith, that her kissogram repertoire also includes nuns and nurses' outfits.
Newfound fame: Karen Gillan signs autographs outside the GMTV studios in London
No mini skirts here: Karen wore a more demure look for her appearance on the show
Gillan grew up in Inverness but moved to London to join the Italia Conti academy in London. During her first year she landed a role in Rebus.
She previously defended the mini skirt in the Big Issue.
'I mean, look down most high streets and girls Amy's age wear that. It's not that weird.
'Short skirts show that Amy is confident and comfortable about her look. You have to have confidence to wear something like that.'
Raising eyebrows: Karen Gillan in character, left, and, right, pictured at a photocall in Manchester to launch the new series of the show
And, this coming Saturday, her character Amy Pond, is seen battling aliens in a shirt that becomes sheer when she gets soaked.
No doubt, certain factions will accuse the show's producers of turning it into some kind of wet T-shirt competition.
Gillan also described the secrecy that surrounded her audition process.
She revealed: 'I couldn’t tell main reception why I was there, I had to go there and tell them that I was going there for something called Panic Moon which is an anagram of Companion.
'And then I wasn’t allowed to tell any of my family or friends that I was auditioning and then I had to keep it a secret when I got the role which was quite agonising!'
'To keep it from my mum – who is one of the biggest Doctor Who fans for two weeks was tough - I was allowed to tell her but decided against it, because I think she would’ve burst.
'She would’ve told somebody, she even has the Dalek bubble bath! But I just remember her face when I told her I got it…it was a picture, it was amazing.'
- Slutty, wet blouses? Jon Pertwee would turn in his grave, or at least reverse his polarity but then again he did have Jo in age of the mini skirt & Baker had Louise Jameson "Leela" (and in the biblical sense too)

Noted, but still, the policy's there so do bear it in mind if tempted to shovel the whole thing at us; a link really will suffice where a link is available. Acknowledged that it might not have been possible in this case, curiously.
In future, please email me with your points instead if putting other people through it. It derails their thread and isn't fair Jim.

In future maybe we could develop a policy of posting up any stories that are actually - heaven forbid - stories. This is publicity-circuit fluff and not that interesting. Ms Gillan herself knew full well it was a promotions slot for something that doesn't need promoting. She has hardly said anything different about her time so far on WHO, has she?In future, please email me with your points instead if putting other people through it. Some people like reading this stuff.
Again it's all relative. As shown one person liked reading the story.
Why not use the ability to just ignore a posted story that gives other people the chance to enjoy what you might not like?
It's all works out the same.
What I don't feel like or need right now is all this stuff again being made into a mountain.
Also this thread doesn't need it either.
Anyone who has anything to point out to me, please take it off here out of respect for others.

It's a thought, certainly.
Suggestions welcome on what pragmatic policy there should be insofar as reproducing this sort of stuff is (given that it's someone else's copyright - to which they are welcome - and more importantly we don't have their permission to reproduce it).
Just trying to avoid something uppity from the owners of this material, or their legal representatives.
Can understand why newspapers want to start charging for online content.

I expected a lot more of that sort of thing when Nu Who was announced.
