An instrumental Bond theme? Might not be a bad idea. We could have had one for LTK with Eric Clapton. I imagine one reason we got one for OHMSS was trouble trying to include the title into theme lyrics, although Leslie Bricusse said he was willing to give it a go.

Back in the 1960s it was considered important that the theme tune included the film's title, hence "Thunderball" sung by Tom Jones instead of "Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" performed by either Dionne Warwick or Shirley Bassey. Octopussy broke that taboo.

I said earlier that the Sam Smith rumour was gaining traction, but that doesn't mean it will become reality. He could end up doing it, but on the other hand I wouldn't be at all surprised if a vocal theme for the next Bond is performed by someone few had thought of. Was Chris Cornell on anyone's tabloid media shortlist for the CR theme? Doubt it. Nevertheless, he got the job.

I remember before Skyfall came out a lot of people on here were talking about this. But it won't happen in this day and age. The public in general "demand" an established singer to do the theme, it's a big part of the film, more important than people think actually.

Adele's Skyfall theme was a resounding success, most people I spoke to liked it a lot, even adored it (me included), mainly because it reminded people of the big Bond ballads by Bassey.

While I'm sure the hardcore Bond enthusiasts such as my self wouldn't mind an instrumental, my feelings are that the "powers that be" won't even consider it. It'll be someone along the lines of Cornell, Adele, Sam Smith, Buble et al.

I think a theme as dark and dangerous as 'OHMSS' would suit Craig's Bond perfectly for a main title. But as said, it's not more about pretty much fixing a big name onto a Bond film, which serves itself as high profile marketing. Remember the buzz from Adele being linked to 'Skyfall'? It served as half of the excitement building up the film and song itself!

But yeah, Sam Smith just has a voice that really, really grates on me. It's a breaking, whiny....ugh, I just can't stand it. Getting wound up typing this as I can hear it in my head!! Aghh....

I fear they'll be too tempted to try and replicate Skyfall's success (why ask Adele back), so they won't stray too far from the hackneyed Bond ballad.

A shame to have that twice in a row, but hey-ho.

Still finding it incredibly hard to believe that Eon would consider Smith suitable. It's not often, if ever, that we all agree on anything unreservedly, but there seems to be census that Smith sucks.

I would really welcome an instrumental theme like OHMSS. it's something I had suggested for Skyfall too.

Thomas Newman, though, would not be capable of doing it.

David Arnold, on the other hand... (or even someone completely new)

I didn't know who Sam Smith was than I heard his song and said hell no. Bond films know how to pick unique songs I would rather have a song custom made like previous Bond films. First we will need to find out the name of the title.
As much as I liked Adele song in Skyfall honestly I wouldn't want to see here do another if I remember correctly she didn't want to and I dont want to push someone who isnt interested in doing it at first. Also lots of people claim Skyfall only sold big because of her which is a huge lie.

bring back Adele

I was introduced to Sam Smith when Naughty Boy featured him on the song "La La La" - nice song, very pop, and I thought Smith's vocals accompanied the track pretty well. Am I all for him doing a Bond theme? Possibly; why not?

I do think Jack White could do a decent instrumental theme song (ducks thrown rotten fruit ). The vocals were my least favorite thing about AWTD, by far.

I think everyone knows what my opinion of Adele's "Skyfall" is, but I'd 100% welcome her return to the franchise if it was down to a choice between her and Pharrell.

I'd never heard of Sam Smith, but gave one of his songs a listen just a few minutes ago.  Definitely not my first choice for Bond 24, but I'd prefer he get the job as opposed to Adele.

Same here. Surprised at the hate towards Smith on Cb.n. Latent homophobia? Likely.

Not really. I didn't know about his sexuality (in fact, I hadn't ever heard of him before this rumor surfaced), I simply listened to a couple of songs by him and didn't like them.

Ditto. Not everything is a politically incorrect conspiracy. But, hey, maybe Shark is right. I guess that's the real reason people don't like OHMSS. Peter Hunt directed it. And all that DAD hate? Put it down to Lee Tamahori's involvement. Skyfall bashers? Yep, it's 'cos John Logan wrote it. Now you know why people hate DAF: Kidd and Wint.

Excuse me while I roll my eyes.

I've found music in general to be an extremely touchy topic with many people. Tastes run in different directions and The War on Bad Taste ™ is never-ending and ubiquitous. Or so people prefer to think...

I remember a - thankfully small - number of people who thought they had to voice their opinion on Amy Winehouse even as the woman was no longer alive. Not a pleasant memory.

Speaking of which, anybody remember the Ghost / Roman Polanski thread? I seem to recall that getting derailed. Can't recall exactly what it was about Polanski or the film that got people so hot under the collar. Put it down to me having a senior moment.  :D :D :D :D :D

Looks like there might be an issue with quoting posts, as I just tried to quote a post and found it not to be working correctly, but just to put the record straight, I didn't make the accusation attributed to me in glidrose's post.  Not blaming glidrose, by the way, just wanted to clear that up since there seems to be a software issue with quoting posts.

I didn't say that you did.  When I viewed the post my name was attached to the quoted post above what you actually typed in the thread.  I wasn't referring to what you actually wrote.  I was just trying to point out a flaw in the software, as when I tried to quote a post in the thread, the forum software also attributed the posts that I had quoted to people who had not written them.

I don't normally buy the Sunday Mirror but I did yesterday, and when I'd got past the political sex scandal on the front page and a Tory MP jumping ship to UKIP thereafter - on page twenty we find "Rihanna spies 007 role". According to this item the said Rihanna not only fancies doing the theme tune, but also a cameo role ala Madonna in DAD. The report says Daniel Craig would rather like to see her in Bond 24 too.

Pinch of salt needed, do you think? ;)

Please, please, please no on the Rihanna thing. They gave her a chance to "act" in that Battleship film a couple years ago and it should stay there. Can't stand her voice, so no on the song as well. The Bond series should be past that novelty point by now. Adele at least has a powerful voice and should be around for years to come.

In Madonna's defense, she is Madonna and a standout artist. She's never been much of an actress, but her cameo never bothered me. I'd still rather have a star of her magnitude linked with Bond than somebody like Rihanna.

I hear more about Rihanna acting childish and going on cussing rants when she doesn't get her way more than anything else. Look no further than her recent fit when the CBS took her song out of an NFL pregame. I can't imagine a pro like Daniel Craig wanting to deal with that kind of crap on a Bond set.
