It's funny looking back on one's old lists. How was there ever a time when I ranked GOLDFINGER (a good film, no question, but rather overrated) so highly?

Anyway, here's my current ranking of the Eon films:

1. CASINO ROYALE
2. THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN
3. DR. NO
4. YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE
5. LICENCE TO KILL
6. FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE
7. ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE
8. THE SPY WHO LOVED ME
9. DIE ANOTHER DAY
10. GOLDENEYE
11. THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS
12. MOONRAKER
13. OCTOPUSSY
14. THUNDERBALL
15. GOLDFINGER
16. DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER
17. A VIEW TO A KILL
18. TOMORROW NEVER DIES
19. FOR YOUR EYES ONLY
20. LIVE AND LET DIE
21. THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH

I find it interesting how far FRWL fell in your list from previous rankings with YOLT elevated so high. :cooltongue:

8.) TB
9.) GE

14.) DAD
15.) YOLT
16.) SWLM
17.) MWGG

My ranking in order best to worst:

OHMSS/CR (tie)
GF
DN
FRWL
TB

Giant Gap

TLD
YOLT
DAF
NSNA

Giant Gap

TWINE
TSWLM
FYEO
LALD
GE
DAD

Large Gap

LTK
TMWGG
TND
AVTAK
MR

Casino Royale and OHMSS tie because I go back and forth. OHMSS is closer to the book, has a better-John Barry-soundtrack and the best actress ever to play a Bond Girl as well as the ski chase. CR has the best actor to play Bond, a script that's close to the book and more serious than any other movie, and the African Rundown.

Based on previous discussions and your rankings in which you seemed to express a low regard for the Sean films (particularly GF) and our on-going discussion in which you are dubious on whether he could have played OHMSS properly. If you like Sean, but not his movies so much, what do you think could have been done to make them better? Or am I confused (not the first time).

This is a rough estimation, as my rankings change every so often, but probably not by much.

1) Licence To Kill
2) The Living Daylights
3) On Her Majesty's Secret Service
4) From Russia With Love
5) Goldfinger
6) GoldenEye
7) Thunderball
8) The Spy Who Loved Me
9) Live And Let Die
10) Tomorrow Never Dies
11) For Your Eyes Only
12) Octopussy
13) The World Is Not Enough
14) Dr. No
15) You Only Live Twice
16) Moonraker
17) A View To A Kill
18) Die Another Day
19) Diamonds Are Forever
20) The Man With The Golden Gun

A year and some weeks later, and not too many differences at all, aside from CR entering the picture and TMWTGG shooting up a few places.

1) Casino Royale
2) Licence To Kill
3) On Her Majesty's Secret Service
4) The Living Daylights
5) From Russia With Love
6) For Your Eyes Only
7) Goldfinger
8) Thunderball

10) Tomorrow Never Dies

There's always that bit of early admiration for the new Bond film simply because it is the newest Bond film. Seems to go away for some fans (many in the case of Die Another Day, I would imagine :cooltongue:).

I've only been highly critical of three of Connery's films - DR. NO, GOLDFINGER and DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER. That's three out of six. Based on that you thought I didn't like him?

And why should I want him to be in OHMSS, anyway? I am perfeclty happy with Lazenby in the movie.

I get why you don't like GF and DAF (although I disagree on GF) but what's not to like about him in DN? I think that's the one he comes closest to playing Fleming's Bond in.

I thought that Connery's performance in DR. NO was at best . . . mixed. At times, he seemed very natural. Other times, he seemed stiff. Especially in his scenes with Jack Lord. In fact, I would say that Connery's performance mirrored the schzophrenic nature of the movie.

Just curious, Publius. What stood out about TMWTGG to make you change its ranking? It's gone up and down and back up again in my estimation.

I don't think it's ever gone down, so much as others have gone up. Really, that's the case for most of the films in my rankings, with the likely exceptions of DAF and DAD.

With TMWTGG, I had only seen it two or three times when I made my first list (easily the fewest viewings at that point), and in retrospect I may have been harsh on it for being sandwiched between two of my then favorite movies, LaLD and TSWLM. I was definitely overcritical of its flaws, and although they still irk me, I've come to realize there's a lot of good hidden under the irritating camp.

Honestly, a bad title song, a weird [censored] plot, some of the worst acting to date, and in general among the most poorly conceived moments in the series (between sumo wrestlers and midgets and karate schoolgirls and allies abandoning Bond and...) are not the best way to package a movie. :cooltongue:

Also, (undeservedly) being bottom of the barrel back then didn't mean as much, since I don't think my dislike for DAD and DAF was as great as it is now. And although I credit Loomis for singing its praises, it was really my periodic Bond marathons that led me to reevaluate it. It helps a lot to see it as the lesser (but still good) half of a duology started with LaLD.

Having now seen all the films at least a dozen times each (far more in the case of my top five or so, save newcomer CR), I think my most recent ranking is much more accurate. If anything stands out to me, I wonder why I still can't bring myself to like Dr. No more than I do. I want to, as it boasts one of my favorite Bond performances and one of my favorite villains, but there's also way too much extra baggage there.
