2. Dr. No
3. From Russia With Love
4. Thunderball
5. The Living Daylights
6. For Your Eyes Only
7. Goldeneye
8. Tomorrow Never Dies
9. Casino Royale
10. Goldfinger
11. You Only Live Twice
12. The Spy Who Loved Me
13. The World Is Not Enough
14. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
15. Octopussy
16. A View To A Kill
17. Never Say Never Again (It's a connery Bond movie, so I list it.)
18. Die Another Day
19. Diamonds Are Forever
20. The Man With The Golden Gun
21. Moonraker
22. Live And Let Die

For me, #1 & 2 are a virtual tie. Ultimately, I like them all, but some have too many moments that make you groan in disbelief (or disgust at such bad writing) - but I'd only say that the bottom 5 fit in that category.

It always amazes me how opinions differ on "the Best." I used to always assume Goldfinger was everyone's fave, but when I see what I consider some of the worst (Moonraker, Die Another Day) at the top of some people's list, it reminds me of what a complex and divergent world we live in. It's amazing anyone can agree on anything.

(You can also tell how old people are and what "Bond Era" they grew up in).

That said, here's my list:

1. Goldfinger
2. From Russia With Love
3. Thunderball
4. Casino Royale (James Bond is Back!)
5. Live and Let Die
6. Dr. No
7. Tomorrow Never Dies
8. The Spy Who Loved Me (Used to be higher, but hasn't aged well. Visually fun, not enough story.
9. For Your Eyes Only
10. The Man With The Golden Gun
11. The Living Daylights
12. Never Say Never Again (Blofeld's Cat's Re-edited Special Edition)
13. On Her Majesty's Secret Service (If Connery had starred, would have been one of the best!)
14. You Only Live Twice
15. Diamonds Are Forever
16. Goldeneye (Great first 15 minutes).
17. The World Is Not Enough
18. License to Kill
19. Octopussy (Bond battles an evil circus and becomes a clown?? OMG!)
20. Moonraker (Jaws turns good?)
21. A View to A Kill (Moore should have been put out to pasture way before this).
22. Die Another Day (I thought the franchise had died with this one).

Well, here we go again:

1. On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969, Hunt)
Tightly constructed, a knight's epic for the late 1960s- a tale of twisted chivalry and fated love. Chock full of Bondian detail, characterization and momentum, it manages to lure the viewer into a plot as outrageous as YOLT's, whilst at the same time bringing its hero down to earth. Endlessly exciting, surprises at every turn, and in the end... touching. John Barry's moody score manages to transcend the film to a level above all other films in the series. Stylish, kinetic cinematography. Lazenby manages to 'suggest' Bond rather than playing him, but he never becomes a 'weak link' - the film is just too good for that. Rigg is exquisite, the best Bond girl ever; Savalas is not Fleming's Blofeld, but he's definitely the best screen Blofeld. And as a bonus, a brilliant safe-cracking sequence.

2. From Russia With Love (1963, Young)
Because of Connery being so terrifically focused throughout, and because of the suspense building once we enter the Orient Express. The 'little chat' with Red Grant seems to last forever, but we sense the tension leading up to the fight- a slow-burn effect unequalled in the rest of the series. Robert Shaw is unmatched for physical menace among the Bond villains. Very good use of sound, especially when it is used less than you might expect. Bond is a killer and a seducer, but because of tight scripting we are aware of his emotions concerning his mission as a 'pimp for England' - there is no need to express Bond's feelings explicitly, as it is done in some of the later films.

3. Casino Royale (2006, Campbell)
It's good for all the reasons OHMSS and FRWL were good, and it doesn't end there; Bond wears his feelings more on his sleeve than ever before, but it works because of the 'Bond begins' concept (taking its cue from Fleming as much as from the latest cinematic trend for origin stories), and because of Daniel Craig's bold and unsentimental performance. The supporting cast (Green, Mikkelsen, Dench, Wright, Giannini, De Bankole) is excellent, as is Campbell's assured and stylish direction of the major set pieces (terror, gambling, torture, doomed love affair). Richly suspenseful and atmospheric, it also captures the 'old-world European feel' for the first time since TLD.

4. The Living Daylights (1987, Glen)
5. For Your Eyes Only (1981, Glen)
6. Goldfinger (1964, Hamilton)
7. You Only Live Twice (1967, Gilbert)
8. Thunderball (1965, Young)
9. Diamonds Are Forever (1971, Hamilton)
10. The Spy Who Loved Me (1977, Gilbert)
11. Dr. No (1962, Young)
12. GoldenEye (1995, Campbell)
13. Live and Let Die (1973, Hamilton)
14. Licence to Kill (1989, Glen)
15. The Man with the Golden Gun (1974, Hamilton)
16. Octopussy (1983, Glen)
17. Moonraker (1979, Gilbert)
18. Tomorrow Never Dies (1997, Spottiswoode)
19. Die Another Day (2002, Tamahori)
20. The World Is Not Enough (1999, Apted)
21. A View to a Kill (1985, Glen)

001. ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE

Brillaint, simply brilliant. An exciting, beautifully shot, well-written, well-acted action-adventure film. Lazenby often gets harshly treated, but neither Connery or Moore could've pulled off that final scene. He does very well for a newcomer. Rigg does a superb job as Tracy and is probably one of the most convincing 'Bond girls' of the series. Pleasance's Blofeld is great, much better than his predeccesor and his successor. The action, especialy the ski chases, are just fantastic. This is Bond at his best!

002. CASINO ROYALE

Without doubt, Daniel Craig gives the single best performance by an actor playing Bond. I can totally see him as the rookie Fleming's 007. I see this film as the OHMSS of the 21st century. Great action, great acting, and a powerful Fleming-based story. This is as brutal and violent as Bond has ever been. I've only seen it once, but with one or two more viewings, it may take my top spot.

003. The Living Daylights

The only really excellent Bond film of the 80s. It has a great dark, European Cold War feeling to it. Timothy Datlon owns the part. He drinks, he smokes, and he's a professional killer. This is Ian Fleming's James Bond, no doubt about it.

004. From Russia With Love
005. Thunderball
006. Goldfinger
007. Dr. No
008. Goldeneye
009. Licence to Kill
010. For Your Eyes Only
011. You Only Live Twice
012. The Spy Who Loved Me
013. Octopussy
014. The World Is Not Enough
015. Tomorrow Never Dies
016. Moonraker
017. Diamonds Are Forever
018. Live And Let Die
019. Die Another Day
020. A View to a Kill
021. The Man With The Golden Gun

Subject to change, (but not too much). I've broken the list into 3 categories.
1) Those I cannot live without.
2) Those I find as entertaining as I do flawed and irritating; watchable in moderation.
3) Those I can live without for long periods of time. Watch them very infrequently, and always clearly understand why so afterwards.

That's my "best-to-worst" ranking, though. If we're talking about the most entertaining Bond flicks, my top three would go:

1. THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN
2. MOONRAKER
3. DIE ANOTHER DAY

And I'm not sure how I'd rank them after that.

It's funny looking back on one's old lists. How was there ever a time when I ranked GOLDFINGER (a good film, no question, but rather overrated) so highly?

Anyway, here's my current ranking of the Eon films:

1. CASINO ROYALE
2. THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN
3. DR. NO
4. YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE
5. LICENCE TO KILL
6. FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE
7. ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE
