Exclusive Interview: Gina Carano talks In the Blood

The most interesting part of the interview comes in the second-to-last question, in which Carano discusses her dream acting gig:

"I'm starting to get into the comic book space a little, which I think is just so absolutely fun. Just to dress up. I can't really talk about it right now, but there's some really good prospects about what we might do there..." - Gina Carano

-STAR WARS EPISODE VII might be pushed back to December 25, 2015.

The assumed summer 2015 release date for STAR WARS: EPISODE VII has been under scrutiny the last few months. I know a lot of people have been expecting it to get moved back because we have yet to hear any official casting news and shooting is expected to begin this winter. That is a tight schedule for an obviously effects driven film (just about a year and a half). The other train of thought, is that Disney already has THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON set for May 1, 2015 and it doesn’t make a lot of sense to release their two biggest films, just weeks apart.

Now comes a new rumor from Badass Digest that Disney is toying with the thought of releasing it December 15th, 2015. This would be a big change as every other STAR WARS film has been released during the month of May but it would give J.J. Abrams and company a few months of breathing room and maybe even more importantly, it would get it out of the crowded summer schedule.

I think this is big news. If it is pushed back to December 25th that only gives Bond 24 a month or two before its completely over shadowed by Episode VII.

There is supposedly an all-female version of The Expendables in pre-production that Carano and Katee Sackhoff are set to star in, if it ever gets going.  I wouldn't be surprised if that's where the Milla Jovovich rumor for The Expendables 3 came from as well.

-BEN AFFLECK is BATMAN.

The actor will replace Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne in the upcoming untitled Batman-Superman feature for Warner Bros., the studio announced Thursday.

Affleck becomes the eighth actor to play the Caped Crusader, following Bale, George Clooney and Michael Keaton.

“We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics’ most enduringly popular Super Heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some,” WB president Greg Silverman said in a statement.

Directed by “Man of Steel” filmmaker Zack Snyder, the Batman-Superman feature will open worldwide on July 17, 2015, with Henry Cavill, Amy Adams and Diane Lane reprising their roles.

“Man of Steel,” released this past June, has earned over $650 million at the global box office.
“Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry’s Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne,” Snyder said in a statement. “I can’t wait to work with him.”

The announcement of a Batman-Superman film was revealed last month at Comic-Con to much excitement of fanboys, who will surely be watching as the studio begins to assemble its Justice League.
The irony of Thursday’s news is that at one point Warner Bros. was interested in having Affleck direct the “Justice League” movie and his participation in this film will now spur interest if whether his casting means a possibility of directing that film.

The Boston native recently upped his Hollywood power when he won the Best Picture Oscar for “Argo.”

Affleck, repped by WME, can be seen next in Fox and New Regency’s thriller “Runner Runner.”

Star Wars Episode VII has a DP and will be shot in 35mm! Quint offers some thoughts on what the means for the new trilogy!

Published at: Aug. 22, 2013, 6:58 p.m. CST Share On Facebook Twitter

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. John Williams being confirmed to return is huge news that makes me happy. The announcement that the new Star Wars will be shot in 35mm is a bigger surprise and makes me even happier still.

At an ASC event in LA today regular JJ Abrams director of photography Dan Mindel confirmed he will be lensing Star Wars Episode VII and that he'll be shooting on 35mm, per Bobafettfanclub.com.

As much as I dislike the prequels and was burned so hard by Episode I, I will admit that the look of The Phantom Menace has held up better than the others. I like the tone better in Revenge of the Sith, but there is something to the quality of the 35mm used to shoot The Phantom Menace that makes it feel more like a movie and less like a video game.

Digital photography has advanced a lot over the last decade and it wouldn't break my heart if they shot the new Star Wars on the Red or Alexa as long as they got a good DP, but I can't deny that the news that they're shooting on film has put a big old smile on my face. It just feels right and also means they're not going to be shooting native 3D. There could be a post-conversion upon release, but the most important thing about them not shooting in 3D is that Abrams now has a lot more in-camera tricks he can do, like building real models and miniatures instead of relying on CG.

I've already been hearing that ILM has been secretly building up their model shop and that they might even be hard at work on secret awesome things right now and this only confirms that Abrams at the very least is aiming to go back to the roots of what makes Star Wars work: shot on film, scored by a genius composer and heavy on mind-blowing model work.

If he pulls this off the geek community will rejoice for years. We love a good comeback story, right?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ben Affleck's casting as Batman has led Warner Bros. to look for a new director to helm their adaptation of Stephen King's The Stand.

Thankfully, it seems like the "female Expendables" film is still in some form of preproduction.  There hadn't been any news on it for a while, so I had thought that maybe it had fallen by the wayside, but more casting for the film has been reported:

You're Next star Sharni Vinson joins the female Expendables

There's still a lot of casting left to do on the film, as the cast right now only includes Gina Carano, Katee Sackhoff, and Sharni Vinson, but at least it seems like things are beginning to get moving with this project again after there seemed to be nothing happening with it for a while.

How Ben Affleck got cast as Batman
Excerpt:

According to The Hollywood Reporter, talks began between Snyder, Warner Bros. and Affleck earlier this year. After completing work on Man of Steel, Snyder reportedly had an idea for a follow-up and the studio began to gauge interest from actors, including the rumored Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling. Affleck was open to the idea and began discussing the story and the character with Snyder and when he liked what he heard, negotiations began for him to appear.

Interesting, I wouldn't have thought Affleck would go in that direction after his recent success behind the camera. And with a project like THE STAND lined up for him, a major chance to further his career as quality director that now will be taken by someone else. Still, keeping my fingers crossed for him.

The loss of Affleck behind the camera for The Stand is what makes the Batman thing really a curious move for Warner Bros.  Given the popularity of Stephen King, the epic nature of that tale, and the fact that Affleck is, after only a relatively small number of films, one of the best directors currently working in the industry, The Stand was something that I thought would be a huge deal for both Affleck and the studio.  In the grand scheme of things, Warner Bros. would have been much, much better off having Snyder cast someone like Josh Brolin in the role of Batman and keeping Affleck on board the adaptation of The Stand.  There was a lot of money to be made on The Stand and the potential for Academy Awards as well, assuming that Affleck brought the same level of quality to it that he has brought to Gone Baby Gone, The Town, and Argo.  That's certainly something that I would have preferred as a studio when there were other and better options available for Batman.  Now, unlike what we saw in The Avengers which had a pretty solid cast of actors, we'll be seeing two middle-of-the-road actors squaring off as the two greatest superheroes in comic history.

I would have loved to see Affleck´s version of THE STAND as well.  But I believe that Stephen King adaptations are still very tricky and not considered sure box office winners.  Especially a gigantic book like THE STAND which, IMO, cannot work as a single feature film and should rather be done as a mini-series for a cable network (see UNDER THE DOME).

Affleck, I speculate, would have left THE STAND for these reasons at some point (I would love to witness the budget meeting of this - and I am sure Ron Howard can tell lots of stories about the immense problems of mounting an ambitious King adaptation).

I would imagine that there would have been some discussions about having to make multiple films.  I think that, had they ultimately decided to turn The Stand into an epic trilogy along the lines of something like Nolan's Batman films or The Lord of the Rings trilogy that there could have been a great amount of money to be made and awards to be won.  That's something, while certainly a time commitment, I could see Affleck being open to, as it would no doubt raise his clout as a director should he be able to pull it off, which he certainly would have been able to do.

As for Ron Howards The Dark Tower series, his problem was that he was overly ambitious.  He wanted something like three films and at least two seasons of a TV show to bridge the gap between the films.  That's just far too much for any studio to commit to right out of the gate.  Plus, at one point he was dealing with NBC, whose involvement generally indicates indecision and incompetence when it comes to high profile projects.

I never understood that plan, far too complicated and daring - not to talk about expensive - to take off. It would have meant you'd have to follow both the films and TV series to get the full story, all over a number of years and with guest appearances of both casts in their respective counterparts on screen and TV. Just negotiating the contracts would have been a nightmare, with every box office result and TV rating a further possibly lethal hurdle for the entire project. Just take a look at HIS DARK MATERIALS and THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO to see how easily even a decent production can end up floating with its belly up. Now think of what kind of impact a weak episode - or a weak season - of the TV series might have had on the whole thing. It's really quite incomprehensible for me how Howard, who isn't exactly a newcomer, could have come up with that pitch.

True, a very difficult concept to pull off - but still intriguing to me.

In the end, I would think that THE DARK TOWER is definitely HBO material, especially after GAME OF THRONES.

It's really an impossible concept to pull off.  A movie franchise cannot depend on a television franchise to fill in the gaps for it in that manner.  There's just too much uncertainty in the TV market for such a plan to be pulled off successfully.

I'm not really sure that The Dark Tower could be pulled off as a tv or movie series.  It's hard enough adapting a single Stephen King work, but with now eight Dark Tower novels currently on the market, I would imagine the task of doing the source material any kind of justice would be nearly impossible.

You'd probably first have to drop all ambition of doing the entire run, all books. And of doing them chronologically. Instead, pick just one book, DRAWING OF THE THREE ideally, focus solely on its story, not the big picture, and try to land a hit with that. If you get this past the studio and beyond the make-money-like-it's-going-to-be-outlawed-tomorrow mark at the B.O. you can start thinking about the next one. And forget about including it all, it's impossible; would probably still be impossible with an HBO quality production. The best King adaptations had to cut - MISERY dropped most of the 'addicted-to-write' backstory that made Sheldon's fate so fascinating in the book, HEARTS IN ATLANTIS is only about a quarter of the book (and would technically belong to the DARK TOWER series) - sometimes substantial parts. THE DARK TOWER, in order to function as a film adaptation, will probably have to do the same.

Hopefully this doesn't mean the end of Jeremy Renner's Aaron Cross character (I know the article said that they're continuing on with it, but it's Hollywood, so you never know).  While The Bourne Legacy had its fair share of flaws, I'd much rather watch Renner and Rachel Weisz continue their story arc than watch another outing by Greengrass and Damon.

Though I didn't particularly take to Renner's spin-off I very much liked the idea his character was essentially not after his drug-enhanced super-fighter skills but didn't want to drift back to the semi-retarded cannon fodder hick he's been before landing in the claws of his country's more ingenious military/intelligence scientists. That was a charming little twist on the Bourne franchise and the uber-human killer genre as a whole, nifty.

That said I suppose a return of Damon will immediately mean an end to Cross as a lead character in his own films. We've learned more about Cross in one film than we did about Bourne in three, Cross' story is practically told. While Bourne's initial motivation is still not even scratched. Seems like Renner's fate is to get the roles of the - more interesting - support characters that are dropped sooner or later in favour of the blander headliners.

Haven´t seen the Jeremy Renner-Bourne - but IMO another Damon/Greengrass film does not excite me.  Another shaky-cam chase thriller with Damon surviving even worse battering, jumps and crashes without permanent damage?

Of course, since Damon´s ELYSIUM not really set box office on fire, he will be lobbying for another BOURNE or any franchise he can get his hands on.

Greengrass will hold out until his Tom Hanks movie opens.  If that one´s a success he will probably decline.  If not... BOURNE FIVE.
