After seeing it a second time, I think they gunbarrel closing out the film works beautifully. No complaints here.

I saw it for a second time... and again loads of people started standing up as the gunbarrel started. I think the music doesn't help- it just runs on from the final scene into the gunbarrel and provides no real sense of occasion.

It just seems weird to have something so iconic as this sequence and to chuck it away like this. Doesn't work; people don't care about it at the end. It's job is to build anticipation- it doesn't work when the film is over and there's nothing to anticipate.

The Skyfall gunbarrel works at the end, for me at least. EDIT: The placement, I mean. Not necessarily the design which I won't get into right now.

Here's hoping Bond 24 has it at the beginning since we know now that Bond is back. Well, he never left.

Not having the gunbarrel at the beginning of SF really pissed me off because of all the hype with this being a classic Bond you'd have expected the classic gunbarrel. it works at the end ([Already warned you about this once. Do not put spoilers in the non-spoiler forum. Do it again and I'm afraid I'll have to give you an official warning] -JimmyBond) Sad that we have to wait another two years for it, maybe!

In QUANTUM and SKYFALL, the gunbarrel feels like an afterthought. Mendes has been frank about his intention to the put the gunbarrel at the beginning, and his sense that that is the proper place for it. He just felt it didn't work when they did sync it up at the beginning of the film, and so it got bumped to the back.

I still wish the gunbarrel had opened the film.

Would you mind not casually dropping spoilers around the place without using the spoiler tags? I gave up trying to avoid spoilers exactly because of posts like this, but there might be others still trying.

Skyfall's out in a lot of places so it may be easy to forget this, but not everyone has seen it yet. Let's be a little more considerate with spoilers in this forum. If you want to discuss spoilers, there is a spoiler forum for it.

When I saw the film last night, as soon as the final scene

ended everyone started to stand up. I was at shock because The gunbarrel immediately followed. Went to an IMAX showing tonight and was surprised the audience didn't stand up when the gunbarrel hit.

Upon seeing film the first time, I thought that it needed to be in the beginning. After seeing it again, I'm content with it at the end.

I just hope it's at the beginning for Bond 24

I think it actually feels pretty natural at the end.

I'm curious to see if Brocolli and Wilson are trying to start a new tradition by closing out their films with the gunbarrel.

Mendes and Babs say no. This was done only because when they tried it at the start, they didn't think it worked with the opening shot.

Saw Skyfall in IMAX yesterday and have to say that for me, it worked fine at the end. No one stood up or missed it occurring in the rush to leave the theater. Also, it was nice to hear applause at the end. All that said, I still prefer it at the beginning and hope to see it return to that spot for the next film.

Unfortunately, when I viewed it in IMAX, the theater turned on all the lights when the gunbarrel appeared. They then proceeded to tell us to exit throughout the entire Bond theme. Needless to say, I was absolutely furious. That is a $20 ticket. I'll sit through the entire credits if I darn well please.

If was Mr Mendes' creative consultant, I'd have just tapped him on the shoulder and said "Why not use the gunbarrel at the beginning, save the 007 fans dissapointment and start with a stunning shot of Istanbul so we know, straight away, where we are. Then cut to the hallway and cue the image of Bond after a few seconds."

If only.

Totally agree. It's really not that complicated. To have a film that is celebrating the 50th year of its lead character in its 23rd (official) movie, and the filmmakers decide to further do away with tradition and nostalgia of such an iconic moment that helped make their series so great is--to put it mildly--very frustrating and annoying.
.

I've been completely fine with the gunbarrels in the last few films. Actually, aside from being at the end of the film, I think the QoS gunbarrel is one of the better ones in the series (I like that he walks away after shooting). It also works well at the end of Skyfall as Bond's world is finally back to normal.

That's what everyone's been saying since Daniel Craig took over. The gun barrel where it was in Casino Royale was fine and made stylistic sense. I'd have preferred it at the beginning, but I can live with where it's at. Afterwards, everyone said that Craig saying "Bond, James Bond" signified that he was now the Bond we all know and love and the gun barrel would return to the beginning.

Two years later, Quantum Of Solace rolls around, and lo and behold the gun barrel is missing at the beginning again only to be found tacked on at the end in a thoroughly horrible use of it, both placement and execution. At the time we were told, this now bookends Bond's becoming the 007 we know and love and the gun barrel will be back at the beginning of the next film.

Cue four years later and here comes Skyfall and guess what? No gun barrel at the beginning yet again! Once more it is placed at the end of the movie. This time it is filmed better than QOS but it still doesn't remotely look or feel right. And now everybody's saying "well next time the gun barrel will be at the beginning." I'm sure they're right, just as I was sure they were right the previous two films, but I can't help feeling I'm about to be suckered again.

Just put the damn thing where it belongs!

Well said!

I've just come from my 2nd viewing of SF and I can attest to the whole "getting up as soon as the dots start crawling over the screen" phenomenon. The place was only 1/3 full but at least half the people took that as a cue to actually leave the place. It seems inconsequential or part of the end credits or something of the sort (to some people). Worst of it all, they blocked my darn view of the screen so I had to crane my head every possible way just to see what was happening on the screen. It was so dissapointing and left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. Ugh.

My sons face was beaming with joy when the dots went across the screen, so that was very special to me, his first Bond film as well!

I took my 12 year old son to his first theater Bond on Friday. I think he has seen 3 or 4 Bonds in their entirety at home and bits of all of them considering I was just coming off 2 weeks of a BluRay marathon preparing for Skyfall. My son is not much of a moviegoer. For reasons I won't get into hear he prefers to be at home, doesn't like crowds or loud noises. So the movie theater is far down his list of things to do. I always ask my son if he wants to go see this movie or that movie. No matter how excited he is from the commercials he always seems to back out at the last minute.

This time, for Skyfall, I approached things differently. Instead of asking I approached it by asking what he thought we would be snacking on and how many people did he expect to be there. I remembered my first trip to see Bond in the theater. I remember seeing Octopussy in the theater vividly. I remember earlier movies I saw but this was special. I remember the gun barrel opening the movie and knowing I was seeing something different. Bond was bigger and more important. I wanted my son to have that same experience, those same memories.

As we sat in the theater he would get my attention during key parts of the movie. During the pretitle sequence he slapped my arm and said something that was drowned out by the action on screen. I still don't know what he said but I could tell from his eyes it was approval. When the DB5 appeared I could hear his "Oh, man!" drown out the Bond theme. But it was when the movie was over and the gun barrel came up and he elbowed my arm. i looked over and he had the biggest smile on his face as he pointed to the screen. It was then that I realized how important the gun barrel was. To me, I guess I had taken it for granted. In fact, I have argued in this thread that it didn't matter whether it beloneged in the begining or the end. But the gun barrel is more than a few seconds of filler. The gun barrel was that stamp. That validation that we were seeing something big. Something important. Something that will stick with you for a lifetime.

I wouldn't change a thing for Skyfall's gun barrel. Like Octopussy, I'll never forget my son's elbowing and that look on his face at the end of the Skyfall. I now, again, understand the passion for the gun barrel and if the masses believe it should be at the beginning I am 100% behind them.

But my son and I will always have ours at the end of Skyfall.

Loved it at the end - because - to me, the last two minutes of Skyfall are the first two minutes of every classic Bond film (post-title sequence). At this point, after multiple viewings the past four days, I'm ready to declare Skyfall my favorite 007 film. It edges out Casino Royale because of its return to form. The end (gun barrel included) is a large part of that.

I edited out his offending spoilers. I've noticed quite a bit of spoilers popping up in this forum lately. We've asked nicely that people be courteous of other's who have yet to see the film. We do have a spoiler section if you want to openly discuss some of the big secrets of Skyfall.

I've been flamed for this before, but I wish they would just stop using it out of a sense of obligation. These last two movies didn't really have a good place to stick the damn thing, and I would have preferred they just dropped it altogether, although I can see why people would want it for the 50th anniversary. Then again are we committed to this for every anniversary? We're only three movies removed from another significant anniversary, which was only five movies from another.

Personally, I'm always more happy to see "James Bond Will Return" than anything else. It's one of the few reassuring things in this world, if that makes any sense.

And on an interesting note, if we get the next Bond movie in 2014, it could be the first "normal" gunbarrel in 15 years.

Good point. The DAD gunbarrel would've been great in 3-D, but is just weird without it.

As long as it is there somewhere... It feels as if it is becoming an over-looked essential.

I expect it in the beginning of the next film for sure!
