PB still has the best opening ever.
Agree. Have very fond memories of my first viewing of GoldenEye. His walk and turn has so much class! Besides, I loved the fact of the barrel design getting generated at the same time as he walks.

Mendes obviously wanted the movie starting with the hallway shot and didn't want to sacrifice it. So, all the power to the film maker's vision.

I know, DC's hand sticking out is completely out ! QOS one was beautiful. I wish they keep all the gun barrels at the end until Craig finishes the series…. but then again monotony isn't all that good.

I was quite disappointing when I noticed the gunbarrel design was very QOS-ish :(

How so?
The gunbarrel design could have been slightly better, but other than that it was great!

I want something in the style of the 1962-2002 gunbarrel, with the stylized design, not just an iris.

Hopefully, that was because it was at the end of the film rather than the beginning. I can't imagine a very plain gunbarrel at the beginning of the next film.

I'm hoping for a more traditional opening gunbarrel

I think the producers wanted to use the Craig era as a laboratory rat, trying to "experiment new things": Let's put a black and white teaser then the gunbarrel and titles. Now, let's put the gunbarrel at the end with a Hollywood-esque title card and start with a zoom in trough the Lake Garda. And now let's start with Bond's silohuette sneaking around and then the gunbarrel at the end... oh look, we can add there a 50th anniversary logo!
Let's get back to basics folks! Why reshooting Craig's gunbarrel three times with different suits, poses and designs? Why not stick to one decent pose, decent suit (not the grey one), and a less basic design? Adele's commercial showed Craig's gunbarrel with Binder's design...

Best one from DC is QOS. Looks very smooth. My gripe is the usual thing.... the fact DC didn't fire a prop gun was a little naff, just the sound effect was used when it clealry wasn't fired, and his arm does look a little stiff out there, it doesn't look like he's finished his pose, or he's trying too hard for that "Bond" look.
Best one we've had though from DC, I just hope things are more normal in Bond 24 but I can't hold my breath.

I had read posts about DC not firing the gun in the SF gunbarrel, so on my third viewing I was watching the sequence just for that.
Newsflash! He fires the gun. There's a muzzle flash as you hear the shot go off.

CR - first black and white gun barrel

Here's the one I mentioned earlier. Its not perfectly executed, but I think it would have looked great if done properly in Skyfall (either at the beginning or end, though I'd prefer opening the film with it).

Er, no there isn't.
DC's gun barrel firsts:
CR - first gun barrel not at the beginning of the film.
CR - first black and white gun barrel
CR - first gun barrel built into the story
QoS - first gun barrel at the end
QoS - first actor to walk off-screen in the gun barrel
QoS - shortest gun barrel
SF - first actor not to fire the prop gun
hehehe

Seen it for the third time. I think Mendes wanted the barrel at the beginning, and the proof is the grey suit. Why else would Bond use a grey suit in the gunbarrel sequence? Maybe his first plan was that Bond, after shooting to the audience, could walk across the screen as seen in the first scene. I mean, Bond shooting, then walking to the screen all in one shot. That'd been good, and original. Pity he opted for the end credits gunbarrel in the last minute, otherwise I'd loved Skyfall more than what I already love it.

I think I see what you're saying. Bond shoots in the gun barrel, then the iris instantly opens up on Bond walking towards the camera as the shot in the movie exists. That would be have been different, but kind of neat.

Exactly. Would have liked that way.

Just back from IMAX, my fourth and last view (equallying "Quantum of Solace"'s record).
Gotta agree with bonds_walther here. Bond shoots the gun. The gun flashing goes too quickly but is there indeed. Of course, you won't notice it in the phone cam screening recordings from the tube.

Sorry if this has been covered in this thread already. Mendes has said that he did intend to put the gun barrel at the beginning, but when he looked at the finished film he thought that it would be too odd to have Bond turn and shoot in the gunbarrel, then open the barrel up to see him coming toward the viewer with gun in hand. So apparently he saw the similarities as a liability rather than an asset.
