I tweeted the guys at Art of the Title asking whether they'll do a a feature on the Skyfall titles and barrel, they said they 'might be working on a little something' and when I replied asking about whether it was actually Daniel Kleinman who designed the barrel for this, they said 'not sure but will ask'. I still have a feeling MK12/not Kleinman may have had a hand in this one...too much similarity to Quantum.

Let's be careful on the spoilers guys. There are people who don't want to know these things, even if it seems trivial to you it might not to them. We have a soundtrack discussion in the spoiler forums where this would all be a bit more appropriate.

The poll on this page is bs as its written with an intention by the author.
"Where do you prefer the gunbarrel to be?" or "Do you care where the gunbarrel is?" are much better questions.

Complete Skyfall Gunbarrel spoilers:
Spoiler

I loved the film by the way, some people are going a bit nuts and hyperbole as "Best Bond EVAAA!!!" and I even read online somewhere "Better than all the others combined!"
Steady there :/

but its *very* good and beautifully shot.

I was so excited to see the Gunbarrel at the start of the film, after watching the MGM and Columbia intros, my anticipation was building on it and was rather disappointed with it not being there! I didn't feel like it was a bond film until I saw the DB5, I was a great film and I prefer it to a lot of other bond films, but this one aspect would have made it so much better for me!

After seeing Skyfall in my opinion the placement of the gunbarrel is absolutely justified.

This. Could not agree more.

The poll should have a "don't care" option.

Same here. It makes the ending even more poignant and effective. Also, the beginning is not just starting with the film... EON seems to have decided to open the Craig Bonds with variations of the gun barrel.

I'm sure the movie's still great, regardless of where the gunbarrel is. But it's one of those things you expect at the start of a 007 film. Like the Star Wars theme and scrolling text, it's a staple of the franchise, and it gets you psyched for what you're about to watch. I can understand it's placement after the pre-title sequence in Casino Royale and at the end of Quantum Of Solace. It provided bookends to Bond's origin story. But that story's been told. He's earned his 00 status. He has become James Bond. He's earned the theme music and gunbarrel sequence in their proper places. And considering it's James Bond's 50th anniversary, you'd think they'd give us a traditional gunbarrel sequence at the start of the movie rather than the end. Nonetheless, I'm looking forward to the movie and Q's return to the series.

Not that the options above are particular representative, but "don't care" should probably be broken down into "I don't care where, so long as it is there somewhere" and "I don't care (about the gun-barrel)". Anyone selecting the last option should also get beaten by a large stick. :)

What about an option for those of us who'd rather not have it at all?

Haven't seen one I liked since Binder. It worked originally in part because of it's simplity (and how it was done, timed, etc), and I'm not sure anyone would have the restraint to just do it straight without trying to add their own "creative" (read "awful") CG "spin" on it. As a logo or "signature" at the end of the film, I guess it's harmless and kind of cool, but imitations rarely work because the imitator usually doesn't understand what made the original work.

I guess I'm in favour of the BB-MGW films differentiating themselves from the ARB-HS films wherever possible (while still remaining James Bond films, of course. "different, but the same", instead of "the same, but different", which may sound like semantics but is actually a major, and I think, positive, change in mindset and intent). Maybe someone new can come up with something new.

I'd love it in future if they just used the Binder imagery. It'd be a wonderful tribute to a man who defined so much of the Bond iconography to just use the photograph he took without embellishment.

it's hard to see what else can be brought to the origin story table for BOND 24.

Smithers,
Sylvia Trench,
Double-taking wino,
Jaws,
Gogol
Freddie Gray
J. W. Pepper

Then we'll finally have James Bond back.

No, then we'll have a Connery/Moore potpourri, just in time for Christmas.

And I thought Christmas only comes once a year... :P

What bothers me the most about the GB at the very end of the film is that the cinema's I visited to watch QOS already turned on the lights during this sequence. This REALLY ruined the iconic moment for me.

Agreed! Couldn't have said it better myself

Plenty of people in the cinema where I saw it stood up and started to leave before the gunbarrel started, and my girlfriend said to me, 'come on, let's go', I was like 'DOOD! WOT R U DOEN!? This is what I came here for.'

seems like they're inventing reasons not to put it at the start of the movie. Every time i see the GB at the end of QOS it just seems out of place, like taking out the intro to a song and putting it at the end.

The problem with having the gunbarrel at the end is that many people think the movie is over and start to stand up during this sequence. They also get restless because the movie is so long. That's exactly what happened when I saw Skyfall.

Having said that, the placement is indeed justified, but should be back where it belongs in the next film.

I generally prefer the GB at the very beginning (I mentioned it before in this thread). Saw Skyfall yesterday... It would fit very well at the beginning... BUT IMO the end of the movie would NOT work without it behind the last scene. But there can be only one gunbarrel...

I don't think it worked at the end of Skyfall as well as it did for QoS, no. The music was a bit disappointing in that it wasn't synced to the graphics.

And like others, I also had people standing up during it. Sort of diminishes the effect.

On reflection I would have stuck it on the beginning- I don't think it serves much purpose on the end and people aren't bothered about watching it at the end.
