I just watched Goldfinger but I closed my eyes during the gun barrel. I actually enjoyed it just as much. I was too busy focused on the rest of the film to bitch about the gunbarrel like a moron.

I'd feel the film exaggerately incomplete if i did so.

A View to a Kill is definitely a better film than Casino Royale (and Skyfall btw) because of the gunbarrel.

A View To A Kill has a lot of issues that Casino Royale doesn't have and none of them are enhanced or fixed because of the inclusion of the gunbarrel at the beginning. lol

No and the opening seconds of QOS are superbly shot, edited and scored IMO and the impact would have been much lessened by the inclusion of the gunbarrel. I've also got a theory that it was only included at the end of that film too give it a final beat that it lost when then original coda was dropped.

I don't know why people get worked up about this kind of thing (like the theme song) it doesn't lessen the quality of the film in ANY way.

Quite. And only think what masterworks CITIZEN KANE and METROPOLIS could have been if only somebody had thought of a gunbarrel first. Even BATTLEFIELD EARTH could have become watchable by the mere inclusion of a few seconds of stylised gunbarrel magic..,

What is it with you people..the gunbarrel is a trademark of the Bond series.especially the official series. What's all this mention of Citizen Kane, Metropolis and a View To a Kill being better than Casino Royale because it has a gunbarrel.
The gunbarrel in the beginning is what seperates Bond movies from other movies. Casino Royale and Quantum will surely be different as it's a reboot of the series..we can understand that Bond is finally becoming the Bond we know.
This we can deduce WAS perhaps the intention of the film makers? But now it is business as usual and everything should be back as normal.

The Gunbarrel should be rightfully back for Skyfall in the beginning.

Perhaps this is the misconception, there is no 'business as usual' and no 'back to normal', the series evolved and will most likely continue to do so. We apparently mistake the Bond films for a TV series in its 23rd season and want to have the old titles sequence back.

The only 'rightfully' place for the gunbarrel is wherever the producers choose, it's still their property.

"Change" doesn't always = good

Bring the gun barrel back to the start of the movies. It's absolutely ridiculous that anyone would ever mess with it...

Neither does change necessarily equal 'bad'. Once more, there is reason to assume the director and the producers do things for a reason. If the result isn't successful with the general audience they will probably draw their own conclusions from it, perhaps even with the desired effect on the placement of whatever sequence we deem worthy of pronounced wailing. But I strongly doubt throwing tantrums will affect the chances of this happening either way.

I still maintain that the gunbarrel at the end is Wilson and Barbara's signature for their Bond films.

What about those 5 films they made with it at the start? :P

Let me preface this by saying I have NOT seen Skyfall yet but am putting two and two together. Could this mysterious 2 second sequence at the beginning be the New MGM logo which if memory serves me correct ends with the camera zooming into the eye of the lion. Could we then pan out of that zoomed in eye as it turns ice blue and becomes the above mentioned focus on Craig's eye/eyes? TIFWIW

My bad, just looked at it again and the logo STARTS with the zoomed in eye. Still I have a feeling it has something to do with the logo though and Craig's eye closeup.

I doubt that could be it Jazzy, as the MGM logo itself is just a different style, it's nothing to do with leading into the film itself....and I think MGM comes before Columbia on the intro, as it did for 'CR' and 'QOS'...

It's very exciting this gunbarrel talk I have to say when we finally see what is happening...!

I think there is a method to the gunbarrel madness. Since the Craig films have been a reboot something tells me (without seeing the film yet) Skyfall will fully shape Bond into the 007 we are meant to see going forward...sort of a prequel trilogy of sorts. My guess is Bond 24 will go back to the old style we all hold dear.

What nobody seems to understand is that we've had 5 Bonds with different styles, different stories, different directing styles, but everybody respected the formula knowing the correct place of its elements would establish even more the new actor as 007. Now, as I said earlier, Daniel deserves a normal Bond film. Many friends I've taken to the cinema or relatives who watched CR and QOS told me "Why no gadgets? why no gunbarrel at the beginning? this is no Bond".And, in a sense, I think they're a little right.

Why (if you want to make a serious Bond film) don't they do things like OHMSS, who had less gadgetry and fireworks but left the formula untouched?

And about MGM's new logo, I doubt they do that "zoom eye" thing you're saying for two reasons: 1) we've got Columbia after MGM and 2) it'd look too Chalie Angels-esque! And I really wouldn't want that US action superproduction opening style for Bond (I mean, connecting the MGM/Columbia logo with the film's actual action) NEVER in a million years!

Seriously?

I don’t know. I feel like there must be something wrong with the part of my brain that regulates my Quantum of Fandomness, in that I don’t seem to care one way or another where the gunbarrel goes. With all the things that make a Bond film what it is, I only have some feelings about whether a gunbarrel sequence needs to be present at all.

I came here to administer self-help, to find a rational argument that would convince me that I should care more. However, my experience here on CBn tells me that if a topic of such a specific nature has to run longer than 3 or 4 thread pages… reason has likely gone the way of the pogo stick.

I had forgotten about that. Quite inventive really, I always like it when they incorporate the logo into the film. Serenity did something similar with the Universal Pictures logo.

Some of you don't care where the gun-barrel is (or indeed even if we have one). Most people who do care all say seem to all say "at the start". Surely there is a case for creating a vote here - as I'm curious to see the results? Plus see how many Eon lap-dogs there are who take whatever they get served. :P ;)

As far as I'm aware none of us has an option, do we? So we're probably all members of the same lap-dog club, only some of us whine more about it than others.

Of the movie going population I am guessing the people that are passionate for having the gun barrel at the beginning of a Bond movie hovers somwhere under 5%.

What happened to...

Would you prefer the Skyfall Gunbarrel to be...
  • At the beginning, completely ruining the pacing of the film, and making the very first shot look strange as it follows such a needed tradition
  • At the end, after having it's change of position being well justified by the director, and symbolising the complete reboot completion.
It was the first poll I voted for.

I can't help but feeling that poll is a bit skewed. I'm sure if we were all EON productions we'd put the gunbarrel at the start, I know I would.

I think a better question would have been: "Does it bother you if the gunbarrel is at the end of the film?"
