I was reading this bloody thread you see, before I'd seen the film and decided to crach the bloody thing open and listen to it without having seen the film. I was also too quick to judge which was absolutely wrong.
One critic said Thomas Newman score fits like a glove in the Bond film. Whoever is reading this: believe me, that is an understatement.
Five stars and no less.
Hope he gets to score another one.

Got it. A gift from the radio where I was interviewed today in a 3hr Bond special.

SecretAgentFan, "more than in any Arnold score" is a very bold statement, I hope that's the case! There were some great "chilled out" variations in the film, but I've listened to the tracks which I thought would be those and I have only heard a couple of extremely subtle uses of it.
The tracks that set the scene and bookend them are great and very much what I was expecting and hoping for, but I'm not a fan of the full on action stuff. Most of it is overly bombastic with very few "rip-roaring" melodies.

I saw the movie on Friday. I don't know yet what to think of the movie. I'll go watch it again tonight.
As for the score I was pretty disappointed by it and I'll even say that it's doesn't help the movie.
The main reason for this is that the main theme is almost never used by Newman with is a real shame for two reason:
- we can say that the theme by Adele was ready months ago because she was pregnant recently and gave birth days ago. So how is it possible that Newman didn't use it more in the score ?
- the theme is really good (in my opinion) which increase the missing opportunity.
I can understand people not liking Arnold's score but at least, even when he didn't write the theme, he used it, or used the one he wrote to be fully developed during all the score of the film. That's what bond music is about, and specialy on the 50th birthday they are so much talking about....
Let's see if my judgement changes tonight....

Newman got this spot on IMO; it's a terrific score.

It's heard prominently in "Komodo Dragon" for when Bond enters the Macau casino, and again in an abbreviated version for the end credits.

Arnold infused QOS with his "no good about goodbye" theme.
There are some good tracks but the action tracks were a bit too bland for my liking.
Newman should have been able to insert Adele theme in Rhodes tracks. This is for me the essence of bond music and why it is so different from the other action films.
I don't say it's bad but it could have been better ;-)
Sorry: "in theses tracks"

But using that logic; QOS should have had "Another Way to Die" all through it and not "No Good".

The track "Old Dog, New Tricks" is on Itunes, but not on the CD, apparently...
Got it. A gift from the radio where I was interviewed today in a 3hr Bond special.

It is referenced once fairly prominently, which is more than Arnold did for either QOS or DAD (okay, so if I was the composer and those were the songs - I probably wouldn't have used them either, well maybe the catchy guitar riff which opens AWTD). "No good" technically has no connection with QOS (unlike say TND/Surrender) - as the song isn't used anywhere in the film, so it's not going to hold up as the most water-tight argument with many (myself included).
Arnold featured AWTD more in QOS than Newman did with Adele in SF.DAD didn't have a tune to incorporate and also Arnold said the track came very late and he had written much of the score before he'd heard it.which would explain that.regarding QoS,the string part that got used for No Good was just a theme in the film....it wasn't related to a song because the song wasn't written then...he just used the theme when he wrote the song much later

Just listining to the CD. Track 14 "The Bloody Shot" from 0:52-1:02 reminds me of a Scorepiece from NSNA.
Arnold´s cue is only there for a very specific reason in a very short scene - and thematically it makes total sense. Exactly like the position of the gun barrel. EON knows precisely what they are doing and one can only applaud them for their idea.
If so, shouldn't it be mentioned in the Booklet like those:
1. Score contains interpolations of the "James Bond Theme" written by Monty Norman
2. Track 13 (Skyfall) contains an instrumental interpolation of "Skyfall" written by Adele and Paul Epworth
No !

Yep, Itunes exclusive. Apparently there's not enough space on a CD.

It did have AWTD all the way through it!

Interesting how this score is really dividing listeners.
Seems to me like this one will fall into the Kamen's Licence to Kill / Serra's Goldeneye category of Bond scores...

Ah, finally a substantial review. Which is ironic, because it says the score is pretty blah. I could get an actual picture of the music in here. I haven't listened to the score yet, but that's the kind of review I'd expect.
I hate it when reviews are too vague.
Actually, having read this now, I might actually really like that score.

I don't know if you're into this sort of thing, but I'm interested in where you would place it in the pantheon of non-Barry scores, Shark.

Near the top, with Eric Serra's GOLDENEYE, George Martin's LIVE AND LET DIE, Bill Conti's FOR YOUR EYES ONLY, Michael Kamen's LICENSE TO KILL, and David Arnold's QUANTUM OF SOLACE.
