Sure it is, because it's not a different goal than "supporting the film." Music that supports the film well will also stand up on its own, just as great cinematography will result in images that are striking even when seen as a still photograph. It's not a composer's job to ensure it holds up on its own.

What do you like about it?
It's just fun, out-there (I kinda like the experimental stuff he does with flipping the recording backwards, speeding and up and slowing it down, even if it does get gimmicky at times) and the breakbeats work very well. Unlike CASINO ROYALE it's rarely boring, sappy, Barry-by-numbers (thankfully the horrible Jinx theme and "Going Down Together" are exceptions), half-hearted or holding back. It's David Arnold on steroids, not David Arnold on Prozac. He's not very interesting when he's trying to be subtle, so DAD plays to his strengths. Balls to the wall, kick-, anthemic Bond music.
Still not as good as Barry, Serra, Martin or Conti, but I dig it.
Not keen on all the backwards stuff (almost seems like someone who's bored of playing the Bond theme trying to find a new way to do it!); but I do like the I Will Return turn you hear throughout: nice quiet version in the hotel room track (I forget what it's called- plentiful mountains of desire or something?). Hopefully someday he'll release a full version. There's a really nice little action theme in the long climax cue too: where Jinx and Miranda are fighting. Shame it's so brief.

Of course the primary goal of any film score is to support the film. A composer should not be composing thinking about the track will sound in a concert context; he should consider how it will enhance the film. But a film is always best supported by compelling music.I guess that's just a difference of opinion. I'm certainly not going to say I don't prefer music that stands on its own - and, obviously, if it can, the film is probably better before it - but I still think the quality of film music has to be a secondary evaluation on its own, and a primary one in its designed context.

I'm glad that one can pull something positive out of that piece of crapWhat do you like about it?

I'm glad David Arnold did with his score.

Reminds me of Portishead, which is never a bad thing.
Smooth muted strings, jazz guitar and wire brushes on drums. Nice.

The soundtrack has released in Switzerland . Not like i live there anyways.
I agree with others. It's one thing to have different regional differences for CD sale dates or theatre showings. But, when Internet downloads (supposedly) are not the same date - you have to wonder if Sony has a clue.

EDIT: Komodo Dragon in its entirety is bloody cool, but the real bliss is at 30:35 for anyone who wants to skip ahead.
ADDITIONAL EDIT: James Bond theme "ingrained" everywhere. [Gigantic sigh].

You're probably right. Hard to tell with text. Thought it was an annoyed sigh. If so, my apologies Matt.I think that's a sigh of relief.

Lovely, thanks Shark.
I just love that 'Breadcrumbs' Bond theme. And 'Old Dog, New Tricks' is luxurious bliss.

Did I hear some of Adele's theme sprinkled in there or was that my imagination?
There does indeed seem to be a little.
I rather wish there was more though
Anyhow, from this listen, the score doesn't sound too bad.... although I also wonder if the cues selected here are all the highlights

If anyone is interested...I have the full skyfall soundtrack .
Legally, I hope.
Look, I hate to be a wet blanket here, but please, no piracy talk in this thread. I enjoy posting here, and I know you lot do as well. No, that's not a threat, just a warning that EON has shut us down in the past for stuff like this.

so, what's your impression of the full score?
EDIT: I've listened to the stuff on the site.... so I've heard Newman's Bond theme. It is indeed VERY similar to Arnold's... but without the oozing swagger (particularly the start anyway).
