MI6: 1“I once had an interview to join MI6”, he announces, to the surprise of everyone in earshot. Davey pauses, wonders briefly whether he is danger of breaking any state secrets, then shrugs: “I don’t think I’ll get into any trouble now”. Davey was a student when a letter inviting him to a – secret – London location arrived to discuss a vague-sounding Foreign Office role. He went for an interview, but a career as a real-life James Bond wasn’t to be.
“I didn’t go forward to the next stage. After the general chat about it, I decided that the key thing if you go into that profession is you can’t tell people about it. Your whole life is a bit of a mystery, even from some of your closest friends and family, for obvious reasons. I just felt I didn’t want to live like that. I was really getting into politics, and I thought… no, politics is for me. It wasn’t a rejection of MI6, it was more, sort of, excitement about political options. The reason I didn’t go for it was because I was into politics.”
