I personally thought that the "We are teachers on sabbatical...and we have just won the lottery" in Quantum Of Solace was one of the funniest lines in the series.

Really?

"Hola. Somos maestros en año sabático, y nos ganamos la lotería." ;)

Deadline did report that this would be a direct sequel to Quantum of Solace. I think we can be sure the organization will feature.

Where was this news?? This is new to me.

Good news, but here comes the grumble....

Can it be beyond the whit of EONs talents, and the millions invested in those creative talents, that, after all this time they can't anounce the damn TITLE with the press release!!!!!

Perhaps they don't have a title yet.

But be that as it may, I for one like the anticipation of a late-in-the-game title announcement. With DIE ANOTHER DAY it went down to the wire and got quite exciting. I'm happy to be kept in suspense until late summer 2012 as regards the title of BOND 23.

As for John Logan, he may have STAR TREK: NEMESIS on his CV, but consider some of his other titles: ANY GIVEN SUNDAY, GLADIATOR, THE LAST SAMURAI, THE AVIATOR, SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET.... He seems an extremely Haggis-ish choice, if you ask me.

In other words, he's a seasoned professional with a fairly versatile track record (he hasn't just written action movies or sci-fi capers) and a certain amount of critical acclaim (GLADIATOR won Best Picture), but not a household name (indeed, I had no idea who "John Logan" was until I did a Google search) or a writer with a very unique vision or style like Tarantino. To put it slightly unkindly, he seems a jobbing journeyman - a competent craftsman but not an artist. A hired gun on A-list productions. A solid and respectable choice, but hardly a brave one. Just like Haggis, really.

John Logan is a top writer and a very good choice for Bond, IMO. I directly know filmmakers who have worked with Logan and rate him very, very highly indeed. You don't get to work with top "A" list directors over and over again if you're just average.

Good to hear it's finally back on again.

Still not crazy about Mendes as director, though. While very well crafted, there's something cold and remote about his films and I'm not convinced that he can handle large scale action.

I'm not trying to diss Logan. I'm sure he's very good at what he does. All I'm trying to point out, really, is that he seems a pretty safe choice on Eon's part as opposed to a bold one, and that I see him as being very much in the same mould as Haggis.

And Logan can no doubt re-write at the eleventh hour (something vital for this sort of production and those he has already been responsible for). Plus he has playwriting form and has worked at the Donmar which has certain links to a director called Samuel Mendes. Never underestimate how small the industry is (!).

Well Eon sure did well with Haggis on CR - so it seems like Logan, with his credits and level of experience, is a fine choice -- but I guess only time will tell.

He is a really good screenwriter. My only concern is that he treats this the way he treated Star Trek: Nemesis, where he essentially threw a bunch of Trek cliches into a blender and whipped up a mess. If he does this job to the best of his abilities, however, it could be really good (bearing in mind that he had to deal with a Purvis and Wade story).

Safe is good for Eon HQ. Not in a bad, lazily creative way either. Safe can imply a sound working ethic, compatibiity, ability to work on a team, ability to work in a producer led series of films, capable of pulling a few rabbits from the hats at the eleventh hour... availability even.

Hooray!

I hope Logan will make up for the incredibly mind-numbing stupidity of Star Trek: Nemesis.

I feel the same way about Mendes' work. I guess we just have to keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best.

Does anyone else think this a strangely dry press release? I mean, nobody is looking forward to working with whoever, nobody is described as singularly talented etc, etc.

Just names and a date, can’t remember a Eon/MGM press release concerning this sort of stuff ever being so… well, un-florid.

Interesting.

True, but they're probably going to do a seperate cast press release at some point. That should be interesting, particularly the Judi Dench will she/won't she return story!

True. But when it was just being announced that Peter Morgan was joining the writing team we got statements like :-
“Peter, Neal and Robert are extraordinarily talented and we’re looking forward to working with the three of them,” commented Wilson and Broccoli. Peter Morgan is the award-winning writer of such films as… etc ect” As part of the press release. No such stuff for John Logan and Mendes.
Interesting change of tone.

So folk are disappointed there is are no inane platitudes in this press release?!

It's not a change of tone. Since when did a press release have any tone or detail?! It's meant to inform not entertain. It's hardly THIS IS YOUR LIFE.

Not disappointed, just noticed that the tone is very different to the usual. In the past we’ve hade “inane platitudes” such as “Peter, Neal and Robert are extraordinarily talented and we’re looking forward to working with the three of them,” commented Wilson and Broccoli. Peter Morgan is the award-winning writer of such films as… etc ect”

Not taken much notice of the Bond press releases myself. Or indeed any. They tend to not be from the mouths of those directly involved and are usually only part of the PR machine at best.

I like cold and remote. Book Bond is pretty cold and remote so I can see that working well for a Bond film.

Have been mentioned in a few myself and I have penned some for others. Any sentiment expressed is just part of the spin involved and the lack of it in this instance is - to me anyway - not that interesting.

Anyway...

I remember the press release for GE because it finally nailed certainty into the end of the six year gap from '89. It felt like big news back then in the pre internet days and had quotes from Cubby Broccoli amongst others, plus a brief biography on Brosnan. Happy to upload it if anyone's interested.
