Any British female with a strong voice is OK with me, from Joss Stone to - yes - Shirley Bassey. Everything But the Girl has always been a favourite with me, but I don't know if they could do a Bond theme well.

To the fans, yes. But EON are hopping around this time - they've asked for demo tapes from interested artists, and they'll make a decision from there. They're asking for artists to come to them, rather than going to artists themselves.I thought Adele was the frontrunner, despite her throat problems.
And if Adele is to do the theme, then a lot will hinge on her availablity after her throat surgery.
That said, she's a great choice. I think this:
Plus this:
Would make for a near-perfect theme.

my dark horse pick would be Florence and the Machine.

Now that they've reformed, who better than The Stone Roses?

Kasabian is spot-on. A lot of their songs sound like Bond themes already.

It is only predictable as it is so apt right now. She is massive in the States, a homegrown BIG name, a cracking voice, young, sellable, completely in fitting for the required vocal soaring and very zeitgeist. I cannot see some Paloma Faith or random b-grader getting the 50th anniversary gig.Really? What a predictable choice, if true.
Though the title singer selection is the last piece of the Bond pie that has been left of field for years now (which is part of its random charm too).

You may be right. To my mind, though, she's apt in the same way as Shirley Bassey would be apt. I'd rather another Chris Cornell than another Shirley Bassey, but perhaps in the fiftieth anniversary year Eon can be forgiven for taking the easy option and picking an Adele to belt out a shameless showstopper.

Adele confirmed. has already written a new soundtrack and in the coming days will come into the studio with producer Paul Epworth, who previously collaborated with Plan B, Florence and the Machine and Cee-Lo.
I understood Adele was having (or has had recently) surgery for a vocal cord haemorrhage?
