Adele:

Not sure if you guys down-under got to see the recent Brit Awards held here in London but arguably the performance of the night came from Adele signing 'Someone Like You"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZtUjFJvYkA

Compared to other acts that night who relied on gimmicks and controversy to enhance their performance Adele proved all you need is a decent pianist, a great song and a voice to rival Dusty Springfield.

Nope, we don't get coverage of the Brit Awards down here. And even if we did, I probably wouldn't watch it. Between the Grammys and the ARIAs (the Australian equivalent), music awards don't hold too much weight. In fact, I hadn't even heard of Adele until I saw ads on television for her album 21. I wouldn't normally have paid attention, but they kept plugging her as a best-selling artist, which I found odd because I'd never even heard of her (and because the Australian charts are dominated by lowest common denominator bubblegum pop like Katy Perry and Ke-dollar-ha). So I Googled her in my downtime, and found Rolling In The Deep, and she struck me as a good chocie for a Bond theme because I think she's one of a handful of artists that could legitimately perform a theme song in the vein of Shirley Bassey. A lot of artists try to replicate Dame Shirley's sound, but they almost always come across as trying to be something they aren't. Adele, on the other hand, resonates with me as one of those performers wo could pull it off, primarily because she has the right voice and because her work is already of a similar calibre. A Bassey-esque number would be consistent with songs like Rolling In The Deep and Someone Like You.

I would like to see Rihanna or Katy Perry sing the title song as long it is in the tradition of John Barry/Don Black/Hal David and not a watereddown or overtracked crossover song to be played on top-40 radio, e.g cut out the synthazied drummachine, make it a truly orchestral song. I also would like the hear elements from the soundtrack in the theme song, unlike the last soundtrack and put the song on the OST!!!!. I think David Arnold is on the right track though.

You want a song by Katy Perry in the vein of the finest John Barry?

They're about as opposite as you can get. Perry makes bubblegum pop for the lowest common demoninator audience. Everything about her, from her music to her wardrobe to her "bizarre" personality and stunts are carefully chosen for her by marketing gurus intent on selling as many albums as they possibly can. She is the poster girl for manufactured pop music. How else would they take the child of devoutly-religious parents and put her in a music video where she sprays whipped cream from her breasts and mimes sex acts? Go and watch the video for California Girls (I refuse to spell it any other way) if you don't believe me. And have you ever seen an interview with her? She's incredibly stupid. Like stupider than a chipmunk. Having Perry do a Bond theme would be like asking Justin Bieber or Ke-dollar-ha or Rebecca Black to do it: a bullet in the head for the Bond franchise and its credibility. I don't often give out negative reputation points, but I'm afraid you earned it for that suggestion.

Rihanna, on the other hand, has the musical chops to pull it off - but I think she's a little close to Alicia Keys to be offering her the gig now.

MUSE & Adele

Why not copy other soundtracks (like Top Gun) and have several songs by several different artists?

I think THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS soundtrack was very good, with solid contributions by A-ha and The Pretenders.

But they were all written by John Barry and produced by Swing Out Sister's Paul O'Duffy. Barry worked all three themes into the score, and O’Duffy did the drum loops/hand claps/synth bass on cues like Necros Attacks, Ice Chase, Hercules Takes Off etc...

Because of that there was good consistency.

It would be great if they could get a current superstar to sing a GOOD song. Believe it or not...if it was produced right Lady Gaga could be a great choice. I just hope they go back to something classic, done by a single female performer!!

Are you suggesting that David Arnold is not capable of doing something similar?

I dunno. He tried it for TWINE by writing both the Garbage and Scott Walker songs. The later was very disappointing, if you ask me. A waste of Walker's great talents.

Alela Diane has the voice to do a Bond song. Do you know her ? Although she mainly sings with an acoustic guitar only (which is not very Bondian, is it ?), I think her voice timbre, for its part, is very Bondian, and it also sounds a bit wild. Desire is my favourite Alela's song (but they are all amazing in my opinion), and the link is here : http://www.deezer.com/listen-10188819

Arguably two of the greatest Bond songs - GOLDFINGER and WE HAVE ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD, featured an acoustic guitar as an accompaniment.

Yes I agree, but there is not only a guitar and a voice in Goldfinger and We have all the time in the world, there is also brass and strings instruments for instance. If you listen Alela's song The pirate's gospel, her most famous, you will only hear a voice, a guitar, and hand claps. And I think it's not very Bondian. A track like Gypsy camp in From Russia with love lets us hear a classical guitar, but it has also an orchestration, and I don't know if there is one track in all James Bond films with only an acoustic guitar, but I could be wrong.

Now there they're back, I'd love to see The Darkness (with Arnold) have a go at the next title song. Big, bombastic orchestration (with a dash of melancholy) and lots of guitar.

Something akin to Daylights would be the ultimate for 23 - a contemporary title song for the main titles and a more classic song for the end, both worked into the score. Both could be 'sold' as songs for the film's promotion. Because it's the fiftieth anniversary the film could even have a unique title sequence for the closing credits as well.

If she's still alive, they should try and get Shirley Bassey to sing another one. I think that would be quite fitting as she'd be the ONLY performer who'd done as many theme songs as she did. And Bond 23 will mark the 50th anniversary of the 007 franchise.

I actually think GaGa would pull off something decent.

In a conversation recently, I compared Lady Gaga to the Red Death. If you're familiar with Poe, you'll see what I mean.

Same could be said for the majority of bands/singers mentioned here if we're being honest- anyway just an idea, they would never even be in the running- Adele would be probably great- no doubt it will be someone hot and unoriginal

Couldn't name one person. There's too many artists out there, but I'd like it to be a woman performing solo. The two title songs of the Craig era haven't been bad, but they are average/okay at best. I'd like something along the lines of "Surrender" from TND and "Nobody Does it Better" from TSWLM.

Hell, if you're gonna use Cinematic, you might as well get Fontana Bass to sing the title track as well. B)

I think Adele's a no-brainer. Especially since she's on XL Columbia Records, which is part of Sony Music. Give her some decent production & songwriting- that's not beholden to the title of BOND 23 and this would be lovely.

I'm not saying I'm picky when it comes to who sings the title song for a Bond film. I just want the song to flow with the title sequence.

I'd love a big ballad, like Sheena Eastons "For your eyes only" or Carly Simons "Nobody does it better".

My big tip would be Kylie Minogue. I reckon she'd be great for a Bond theme.
