If everyone's favorite tax-challenged action star Wesley Snipes really turned down The Expendables, it may be because he had a legit reason; he's actually in a real movie, Brooklyn's Finest, with proper co-stars and everything!

With this and Machete, 2010 will see both Snipes and Steven Seagal back on the big screen B)

I will overlook Rihanna's ghastly tone-deaf warbling at the end (with amelodic interjections from what sounds like Jay-Z) and say that looks damn good.

Wow, this trailer looks hot. Do we actually get to see Richard get back into Gere? And Snipes actually acting again? Count me in.

And, on the subject of redemption: any release news on Mickey Rourke's 13 and PASSION PLAY?

Passion play is still filming I believe, and as for 13...hmm, maybe they're having a hard time marketing a movie about Russian roulette?

Anyway, The Expendables has been seen :

That negative review more or less comes across as a positive one to me, especially when he implies he would have preferred it had a certain someone written it instead.

Yeah, and I enjoyed how he said the film was anti-female after remarking that Charisma Carpenter needs to go to the gym.

He actually threw in a few more comments in the talkbacks, most notably that the violence is definitely R-rated.

Thanks for the links, dino. Sorry for the poor fool who can't relate to the Eighties films, needing an updated, watered-down film that's kind to the ladies, etc. A PC Expendables is not what I've been pumped to see, any more than I'd have wanted to see a PC Grindhouse from QT.

I suspect The Losers will be more this guy's bag; the 90 pound "kick-B)" girl these kinda guys seem to find so "like the most badass, hottest thing ever!!!", and lots of smarmy irony so that we can all feel comfortable knowing it's not the 80s anymore and we're more sophisticated with our Facebook, and reality TVs and live action toy movies.

Of course the film could well be rubbish but when he tries to use "a perfect film…for 1985" as an isult he suggests he doesn't understand the whole enterprise. And to complain about a film only appealing to one gender is bizzare; New Moon's lack of multi-chromosomal appeal didn't seem to stop it from nabbing the biggest opening day in US BO history. Besides, I think more women are into these kind of things than he realises. Not a ton, but more than he thinks methinks.

Methinks so too. And, you gotta admit, it will be refreshing to see an 80s-style male fantasy without a female sidekick as buff as the young Linda Hamilton staunchly coming to rescue the poor boys from their boy toys.

One more thing THE LOSERS simply can't bring to the table: certified Rourke stud appeal:

Mickey Rourke and Kim Basinger's 9 1/2 Weeks has been voted the film with the sexiest moment in cinema.

Wait, is 13 supposed to be a remake of 13 Tzameti? B) Do they just have to keep remaking good movies?

Anyway, I read someone's description of THE EXPENDABLES being almost terrifying because it's exactly what the human race would put on its bucket list if you told it that it had six months to live.

Can't wait.

Yes, it is indeed a remake, with the original creative force both writing and directing. I've never seen the original, which sounds pretty darned dark from the synopsis online. I assume they'll purty this up a bit. But no doubt the Rourke character will bite the dust. (Incidentally, Rourke looks whip-thin in the pix I've seen.) With the bigger projects Mick has lined up, in which he stars and doesn't co-star, he may well be hoping this one goes straight to video. Tell me about the original film, 00T.

I still think TZAMETI is quite effective in its original form and I'll be shocked if the remake proves superior.

Here's my review, Uncle Dodg. Lovely, dark B&W French thriller. Not sure where there's an ample opportunity to check it out unless it's in video stores nearby or you have Netflix. If you can find it for cheap on Amazon, go for it. (And if you don't like it, sell it to me. B) )

Thanks for that, 00T. I'll check it out a.s.a.p. I've no doubt that the remake will suffer from the Americanization syndrome.

Agreed. But I'll see the Nispel film, despite Nispel and Jason Momoa, just to see the Mickster put a cool spin on his part. I'm far more interested in what he can do with a load role in PASSION PLAY, hoping he's made the best of the chance to play more than a supporting part.

Also, a new teaming with Walter Hill might be worth a gander:

Oscar nominee Mickey Rourke will star in indie action-thriller St. Vincent, directed by Walter Hill for Occpuant Films and Secret Handshake Entertainment. Production is slated to begin later this year.

St. Vincent, written by Cameron Young, centers on a hit man returning to his former New York City neighborhood to finish off the botched killing of an informant. He's then forced to masquerade as a priest and finds himself taking the confessions of his target.

Rourke and Hill worked together on 1989's Johnny Handsome.

Sidebar: Curious about Hill. Anyone seen UNDISPUTED and is it worth buying?

Here's the trailer for the somewhat Expendables-ish The Losers mentioned earlier in this thread:

I have to say it shows its geek/hipster graphic novel roots far too much for my liking. And that finger gag at the end is B)in' done, man! Also I noticed one of the production companies is called "Weed Road". Did 14 year olds finance this thing? Still, I can see some guys getting a kick out of it.

Much of that trailer comes directly from the comic the movie's based on. The finger/gun gag at the end of the trailer being one such example. I think someone has done it since, but it first appeared THE LOSERS #1, written by Andy Diggle with art by Jock.

That trailer sold me on that film. The film itself does look pretty run of the mill, but I am excited to see Jeffrey Dean Morgan in another bad B) role (he was the Comedian in Watchmen, for those who still don't know ). Plus Chris Evans is pretty cool, not a great actor but he acquits himself in everything he's in.

I'm very excited to see Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Idris Elba in a movie like THE LOSERS. The source comics offer better action/adventure than most movies.

I may be the only person here who hasn't seen him in anything. But he seems to have been working steadily and I look forward to seeing him in action.

Let's all remain undaunted by this devastating news:

Sylvester Stallone and former Bond girl Denise Richards' Bollywood debuts have been panned by critics - they have both received nominations for worst movie performance at India's annual Golden Kela Awards.

The American stars appear together in Kambakkht Ishq (Unfortunate Love), alongside Superman Returns actor Brandon Routh and Bollywood regulars Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor.

But their performances have failed to wow Hindu movie critics and the 2009 romantic comedy has landed them dishonours for the Bollywood equivalent of the Razzies.

Already, The Expendables is giving some of its cast a much needed career boost. Look at the plum gig Eric Roberts just picked up :

Poor Eric. He really needs to fire his agent and stop grabbing the first next gig that comes his way simply to keep working.

On the other hand, this may be good news for serious fans of Mickey Rourke:

Hollywood hellraiser Mickey Rourke will no longer play Conan's father in the forthcoming Marcus Nispel remake of Conan, due to start filming in Bulgaria later in March.
Reportedly, his place will now be taken by Ron Perlman, best known for playing the part of Vincent in the television series Beauty and the Beast and the comic book character Hellboy in the two films of the same name.

In addition to Jason Momoa - long since cast as Conan - and Perlman, the cast of the film apparently includes Rachel Nichols, Stephen Lang as villain Khalar Singh (from box office smash Avatar), Bob Sapp and Leo Howard.

Rourke was initially cited as the choice to play Conan's father but, in addition to other movie commitments, the veteran actor has reportedly broken his arm in an arm wrestling match.

Naw, his testosterone level's just gone off the charts.

BTW...I've been thinking more about Eric Roberts' upcoming shark/octopus gig. He really should have held out for a film about a Roman gladiator who's transformed into an octopus. They could've called it SPARTAPUS.
