Right or wrong, the writer was saying that this is the first screen appearance Arnold's given since becoming Governor where he hasn't played himself.

That's not true, though. He plays a character by the name of Prince Hapi in AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS (2004).

Thanks for the clarification. I still retain my hopes that he returns to the screen.

Great artists are often misunderstood by their colleagues, even the great ones like Downey. I hope Mickey Rourke brings whatever it takes, as he has here, to Sly's film:

Hollywood actor Robert Downey Jr. was left baffled on the sets of upcoming movie Iron Man 2 when his co-star Mickey Rourke asked for pictures of his dead dogs to be held up on set during emotional scenes.

Downey Jr. has revived the superhero for an upcoming sequel, which will see his character pitched against villainous Whiplash, played by Rourke and he was fascinated by his co-star's unusual acting technique, because Rourke used photographs of his beloved Chihuahuas to help him portray tearful moments, reports dailyexpress.co.uk.

"He would have someone holding pictures of recently deceased pets off camera to make him feel sad or whatever for a scene. It was all serious stuff. I've never seen anything like it," he said.

Whatever it takes, Mick, whatever it takes!

This may be too much to hope for, but if the project happens...wowwwww.

Let it never be said that Mickey Rourke is one to shy away from a scrap. Fresh from action-packed roles in Iron-Man 2 and The Expendables, Rourke is set to play Asian warlord Genghis Khan in John Milius’ forthcoming biopic.

Whilst official confirmation has yet to emerge, Rourke sounds pretty sure the role is his, telling the Orlando Sentinal he’s keen to start work with Conan helmer Milius.

“I read his script and you know, the man is known for his tough writing,” says Rourke. “He wrote Conan and Dirty Harry and Apocalypse Now and it’ll be interesting to see how he works behind the camera. I’m playing Genghis.”

Sounds fairly promising to us, but how will Mickey’s creaking limbs hold-up against what promises to be a physically gruelling role? After all, didn’t old Genghis spend much of his war-making days on horseback?

Not a problem, as far as Rourke’s concerned. “I rode quite a bit, back in the day,” he says. “The horseback riding won’t be too much of a problem. I probably ride a horse better than I drive a car. There’s going to be some archery from horseback called for that I have to do, so that’ll be interesting.”

Naturally, an interview with Mickey can only go so long without taking a turn for the bizarre, and sure enough, he goes on to claim the apparent selling-point of the role was Genghis’ renowned affection for man’s best friend.

“One of the things I like about Genghis Khan was his love of dogs,” he says. “The Mongols used dogs in battle, and dogs rarely made it out of the battle. But in one instance, in this script, he orders his men (to), ‘hold the dogs back.’ He was looking out for the dogs. I like that.”

Warrior, rider, dog-lover…sounds like this one was tailor-made for Big Mick. With no official word on casting as yet, let’s just hope he’s not getting ahead of himself.

Genghis Khan, or Genghis Khan't? Let us know below.

Sly was sighted at the Iron Man 2 premiere...does this mean he's still trying to persuade the newly red hot Downey into doing his Poe thing?

You knew it was inevitable, but that doesn't stop it being hilarious and depressing/hilariously depressing when it happens; Fox get rolling on a "more realistic, darker, grittier" etc. Commando remake:

More realistic? So basically it's Taken then?

And how long before Sam Worthington is rumored to star?

I believe so. And, actually, a good way to get the film made with some substantial big studio backing would be to base the film on Matthew Pearl's historical/literary thriller, The Poe Shadow. Or find some other device to raise this from a literary bio into a tale of suspense--one that also manages to say something important about Poe.

I'll save my fanboy comments on that trailer for another thread. But there's room for both movies, Sly's film is a throwback/homage to the action films of the 80s. This film is a throwback/homage to the exploitation films of the 70s.

It does look like great fun, though perhaps unsurprisingly Alba is playing it way too broad. As much as I do try to seperate the art from the, un, "artist", I do kind of wish this had come out before Seagal's "troubles".

People still get excited about De Niro? B)

Ironically he comes across as the most stiff and least exciting cast member in this thing. I'd much prefer Al Pacino played his part. Can you imagine him in full Heat/Scent of a woman rage mode : "Make no mistake, we at at WAAAARRRR! Every time an illegal DANCES ACROSS OUR BORDER, it is an act of aggression against this SOVEREIGN STATE. An overt act of TERRORISM!"

I predict Don Johnson to be the pleasantly surprising scene stealer here.

It generally backfires hiring "classy" actors to appear in exploitation pastiches, because they're either slumming or hamming; at any rate they can't play it with the necessary straight face. DeNiro does look a tad hammy here, but I do think Alba absolutely massacres the (otherwise funny) "they crossed us!" line.

You are probably right about De Niro, he will probably give an above average performance at best, but it will still be nice to see him in it. I also agree with what you said about Alba, she will most likely be the most annoying character in the movie, from what I've seen in the trailer.

I agree with you. I suspect that the film itself would turn out to be one of the funniest actioners ever made (hopefully, at least some of the laughs will have been intended), but a terrific boon would be Don Johnson's getting some serious work. He's been punished long enough for having a large willy and really does have some decent acting chops. That said, Wikipedia lists a 2009 film of his entitled A GOOD OLD-FASHIONED ORGY, but there's no corresponding web page. Any news on that?

So it seems there's another Expendables-esque ensemble action project looming on the horizon, The Killer Elite, with Jason Statham, Clive Owen, Robert Deniro (y'know, the guy from those Fockers movies. Can he do drama?), Dominic Purcell (Prison Break - what up, dodge), and some others who may or may not be awesome :

We all thought Machete was the start of DeNiro's Brando/Island of Dr. Monreau phase but it seems it was more the start of a Burton/Wild Geese type groove.

Hmmm...I thought I'd read somewhere that it would be called THE KILLING ELITE, presumably to avoid confusion with Peckinpah's not-so-clasic TKE.

Now, this could be verrrry interesting, as we continue the Rourke Watch in the absence of any new news on TE:

Mickey Rourke will star in a currently untitled thriller to be directed by Tony Scott. The film, which has been picked up by Lionsgate, follows two New Jersey mobsters who are assigned to destroy a Puerto Rico crime lord's den, but find a young girl there when they arrive. The script is penned by Sexy Beast scirbes Louis Mellis and David Scinto, adapted from Buddy Giovinazzo's novel Potsdamer Platz, Scott is also set to produce through Scott Free Productions, with shooting planned for later this year in Puerto Rico amongst...

source: http://www.imdb.com/.../news#ni2506641

The trick seems to be deciding the order of release for Mickey's staggering output of projects. Next up should be THE EXPENDABLES, though completed films such as 13 may remain in the can for a while. Hopefully, with the success of THE WRESTLE, IM2 and TE, he'll be judged as bankable enough to release--at least--PASSION PLAY.

As this thread seems to be the unofficial repository for Machete news, Seagalogists everywhere should be pleased with this info from Robert Rodriguez :

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/45169

"In fact the main villain and Machete’s nemesis is a Mexican drug lord from a powerful cartel (played by Steven Seagal) that kills Machete’s family and runs him out of Mexico for being an honest cop, which is why Machete’s forced to work as a day laborer in the US.

Seagal’s character follows him to the US to kill him off when Machete starts messing up the assassination attempt that Seagal’s character funded. Seagal was so awesome we kept expanding his role on the set. The Big Final battle is Machete vs. Seagal and it’s amazing."

I'm worried, just a little. Why? Could these possibly be the most memorable quotes from the greatest action movie ever made?

Gunnar Jensen: [from trailer]
[about to fight Bao Thao]
Gunnar Jensen: Bring it, "happy feet"!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pirate leader: [from trailer] Drop your guns!
Lee Christmas: Fat chance.
Barney Ross: Why do they always say that?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Barney Ross: [from trailer]
[in the middle of a mexican standoff, a faint buzzing sound can be heard]
Barney Ross: What's that?
Lee Christmas: I'm getting a text.
Barney Ross: Excuse me?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dan Paine: [from trailer] Who sent you?
Barney Ross: [to the bald Dan Paine] Your hairdresser!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trench: [from trailer] Give this job to my friend here. He loves playing in the jungle, right?
Barney Ross: [sarcastically] Right.
Mr. Church: [referring to Trench, confused] What's his problem?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mr. Church: [from trailer] Only thing you need to know is the job's real, and the money's real.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mr. Church: [from trailer] You got a problem with that?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hale Caesar: [from trailer] What happened to you?
Barney Ross: I got my B) kicked.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lee Christmas: [from trailer] You know it's not easy being your friend.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lee Christmas: [from trailer] Ten seconds you won't believe what's gonna happen.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Barney Ross: [from trailer] What's wrong with this picture?
Lee Christmas: Everything.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tool: [from trailer] I promised myself, I'm gonna die for something that counts.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trench: [from trailer] Give this job to my friend. He loves playing in the jungle, right?
Barney Ross: Right.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lee Christmas: [from trailer] Are you crazy? You could've killed me!
Barney Ross: Your welcome!

Tell me, please, anyone that this is just a cruel, childish joke!

If you are right, then we can be grateful in a way. How many films have been partly ruined by having their best dialogue or scenes given away in the trailers? More than I care to remember.
