Since this has become the unofficial 'ageing action stars' thread, let's note that tonight sees the debut of the greatest reality show ever made :

STEVEN SEAGAL - LAWMAN !

10pm tonight on A&E.

http://www.aetv.com/...-seagal-lawman/

He's looking remarkably fit and thin. This should do wonders for his his plans to become a leading man and a serious actor.

Word on the street is that The Expendables will be represented in some form, whether its the whole film or just some clips at Harry Knowles' butt-numb-a-thon, happening today, I guess we'll know tomorrow night whether its true or not. It would make sense as Sly uses AICN as his unofficial connecting-with-the-fans outlet...

Could you clarify what that is? In any case, hoping for some news tomorrow!

It's a 24 hour film marathon he has in Austin every year, they usually get some juicy exclusives and premieres; this year so far they've seen Shutter Island and Kick-B), amongst others.

Edit - Oh for God's sake, it's the TITLE OF A FILM. How come we can't say it?

Kick-Censored. Now, there's a title with some oomph-pow-pow.

I guess so, looks pretty stupid to me. I guess Matthew Vaughn has left his Layer Cake days behind him.

Anyway, Expendables didn't make an appearance, though not for lack of trying on AICN's part apparently.

When's the last time in memory when a film's been as fiercely guarded as this one? Hopefully, by March one or two of the cat's whiskers will be let out of the bag.

Fiercely guarded, dodge? We've had a lot of production stills, set reports, a showcase trailer, and a production blog including a practical blow by blow account of the Sly/Bruce/Ahnuld scene. In fact I think I'd prefer if it were MORE guarded. Imagine if they kept Ahnuld's cameo a secret and you didn't know about it until you saw it on opening day!

Well, I must admit I'm actually rather excited about this one.

I'm a sucker for 80's action films... hoping for something similar here.

She was rumored to be in it at one point...as were Sandra Bullock, Ben Kingsley, Forest Whitaker etc etc.

Toward the end, it is indeed looking mighty fine. Or, as they say here in the South, maghty fahn. Let us all bless Sly for this great leak!

She's still listed on IMDb as being in the film, though months and months before her death, I seem to recall reading that she had been let go.

From what I remember she was cast at one point but then for whatever reason she left the project.

The only time she was mentioned in the production blog was this :

"The script went through a re-write and Brittany Murphy’s character was deleted."

Now it's possible that this is polite-speak for...other reasons they might not have wanted her in the film.

Now, listen up, all you apathetic fickletons! Sly's gone to the wall for you, so reactivate your drool glands:

January 5, 2010

Sylvester Stallone broke his neck while filming a fight scene in his latest movie.

The veteran action hero had emergency surgery and a metal plate inserted in his neck following the accident on the set of The Expendables.

The 63-year-old actor was filming a fight with wrestling co-star Stone Cold Steve Austin, 45, in the upcoming movie, but it was so realistic that Stallone ended up with a hairline fracture in his neck.

Stallone told FHM magazine: 'Man, it was seven guys, kicking each other's B), one guy tougher than the next. No joke, our stunt guys were begging for mercy.

'Actually, my fight with Stone Cold Steve Austin was so vicious that I ended up getting a hairline fracture in my neck. I'm not joking.

'I haven't told anyone this, but I had to have a very serious operation afterwards. I now have a metal plate in my neck.'

Urgent update to above:

Stallone proves his Expendables injury was real
Simon Brew

Never doubt Sylvester Stallone, as he provides X-ray proof of his broken neck sustained on the set of The Expendables...
Published on Jan 13, 2010

Last week, we reported that Sylvester Stallone had broken his neck while filming The Expendables, in a fight scene with Stone Cold Steve Austin. "Bull[censored]", called some corners of the Internet, claiming Stallone was making the whole thing up to generate publicity.

But, ladies and gents, Mr Stallone was reading. And he's now provided an X-ray of his neck to prove it was, indeed, broken. We B) you not. And we could not love this film more.

So here is the visual proof, which turned up in The Sun today. Either Sly is a dab hand with Photoshop, or he was in lots of pain.

We suspect the latter.

So, it's come to this now. Sly has to prove that he fractured his neck? Loomis probably started the rumor that the injury was bogus to derail the juggernaut that may derail Rocky and Rambo.

A very cool look at an unofficial poster, though the article--dated 1/15--still lists this as being Brittany Murphy's last film...and co-starring Danny Trejo!

Not related to The Expendables but on the 'ageing action stars' front noted "Seagalogist" and all-round B-movie champion Vern has called Universal Soldier 3/5/Regeneration "miraculous".

This definitely sounds worth checking out. A chance to see the acting chops that led JCVD to pass on Sly's greatest action movie ever made? Meanwhile, I continue to hope that...really, any day, Sly and the studio may see fit to throw just a couple of crumblets of information our way. Or that Harry or Vern will come up with a way to see an early cut of the film...

From Dolph Lundgren:

In playing opposite Stallone, Lundgren suggested that the two strike a strong visual contrast that plays well with audiences. “On film, there is a certain thing between us. We have a great screen presence together. He is Italian and dark. I am the blonde Nordic type. When we are together on screen, it looks very good when they cut back and forth between us. I realized that when I saw THE EXPENDABLES just on the monitors, when we were filming.”

Action auteur heaven.

Here's the trailer for the somewhat Expendables-ish The Losers mentioned earlier in this thread:

I have to say it shows its geek/hipster graphic novel roots far too much for my liking. And that finger gag at the end is B)in' done, man! Also I noticed one of the production companies is called "Weed Road". Did 14 year olds finance this thing? Still, I can see some guys getting a kick out of it.

Nothing very interesting here, IMHO. I see we get the requisite 90 pound girl beats the crap out of a burly guy scene. And that Jason Patric appears to have resurrected Alec Trevelyan's satellite dish. Still, it is at least commendable for being "old school" looking.
I wonder if 2010 will see a return to traditional guns & ammo style action, rather than the standard metrosexual man-boy fighting CGI monsters flick that seems to have become what "action" means over the last few years. Already in '10 we've had Denzel carving up dozens of goons in The Book of Eli, we've got Mel Gibson returning to full-on vengeance mode, next week sees the 80s-esque spy-buddy action flick From Paris With love, and later on, we have The A-Team and The Expendables. If some or all of these are hits, we might see some actual action return to the action genre.

The prosthesis--I mean, the prognosis--is good. If Travolta as Vin Diesel doesn't sink the groovy trend.
