The conditions aren't exactly looking great there!

Yep, it's been raining cats and dogs during the first day of filming. They'll use CGI for that too, I guess

Thanks, Marketto007! No, I wasn't there, but I read in the Italian press that the weather was really bad during the first takes

Now some more tidbits about the cars: the Italian fan site http://www.jamesbondwebitalia.com has its own podcast named BondTV, and the last one released today covers the Lake Garda filming, with an exclusive sneak preview of the cars on the QoS set (Aston Martins, and a Mercedes SUV)

Well, looks like this video confirms that the Aston Martin Bond uses is NOT the same one as seen in Casino Royale (not that that was ever a possibiliy; that car was written off) because the Astons all have identical regstration plates, which are not the same as the one in Casino Royale.

The best James Bond car ever. It hasn't got missiles, machine guns or ejector seats, but it's wonderfull. Well done MkB, WELL DONE!

So what are those strange bits underneath the car and the odd attachment we can see under the front bumper? Are these more camera position mountings or gadgets for the movie? Hard to tell.

Most likely it's either some kind of camera mounting so they can get shots of Craig driving, or it's some kind of rig that has been set up for stunts, like the compressed air cannon used for the car roll in Casino Royale.

The V8 Vantage in TLD is dark green?[/quote]

It's a dark greyish green or brown; I've stood next to the thing enough times and I can still never tell what colour it is!

There's a video on YouTube showing rehearsals with the Aston Martin, with a contraption holding the camera.
Nota: I have no sound on my computer, so I've no idea if there is a soundtrack on this clip, and I can't say if there's any spoiler in the soundtrack. Maybe someone else could confirm?

A-ha! Thanks for posting! Looks like that's why the side skirts are off. That's a hell of a contraption- is it getting shots of the bonnet?

Additionally, if Alfa is lighter, and having an engine half the size does suggest that possibility, then, specifically on a very curvy downhill course, it might have the advantage. The only thing I don't know is what is the weight bias on the DBS. Does anyone know?

Couldn't find an actual split, but did find this...

As with the DB9 and DBR race cars, the Aston Martin DBS benefits from the inherent characteristics of the VH architecture. The VH underframe consists of pressed, extruded and cast aluminium components, bonded together to create an immensely strong underlying structure. This structure means that weight is kept to a minimum, with the front-mid mounted engine and rear-mid mounted transaxle ensuring a near perfect weight distribution: 85% of the car's weight is positioned within its wheelbase.

Apparently it's 1695 kg
http://www.astonmart...ydon_vh/dbs.htm

The 159 is (I think) around 1740kg, although I think that depends on the spec (this is the V6 of a couple of years ago-not sure if they still make it but if they do I guess the Bond team'd be using the top of the range)

If the 159 is an Italian police car, then she's heavier than the standard model (the cars are armoured and have some other "gadgets")

Breaking news: early this morning (6:30 am), an accident involved the Aston Martin on the set of Qos. The pilot lost control of his vehicle, and the DBS fell into the waters of Lake Garda. The pilot has been saved by a rescue team of frogmen, and is now recovering at the Bolzano hospital, in the hyperbaric chamber.
The car has been taken out of the Lake with a crane (see photo below)

Best wishes to the pilot / stuntman, let's hope he recovers quickly.

Good news from Reuters Italia: according to Anthony Waye, executive producer of QoS, the pilot only has superficial wounds and should be released of the hospital at the end of the day.

It's a mark of the filmmakers' professionalism (not to mention the size of their budget) that they've got rescue and medical teams standing by, prepared for all sorts of contingencies. Nice to know that, while they're committed to giving us the most gripping edge-of-the-seat entertainment possible, they're taking care of the people involved in the production.

Indeed, Major Tallon!
According to the last news, the pilot, named Dan Frey, has been incredibly lucky. The car is said to have fallen down 20 metres before hitting the water, and sinking down 55 metres! Fortunately, he managed to get out of the car before it was too late.

It's a bit like the law, I'd imagine. Health and safey laws I'm sure require them to have emergency personnel standing by; it's not because Eon are rare amongst filmmakers because they actually try to prevent people dying or soemthing!

Good heavens- that's quite an accident. Glad to hear he's okay- this'll be making the papers big time, I'd imagine.

Not convinced about those figures, though- there's no way it sank 55 metres into the lake otherwise they wouldn't have retrieved it, surely? Although you do say that he's in a hyperbaric chamber, which seems odd- he can't have stayed in the car while it sank deep enough for that, can he?

Yes, I find the figures strange too, but I'm just reporting them (that's why I put it in the form "the car is said" etc: tip toe, tip toe )
I'm not familiar with hyperbaric medicine, so I'm not sure what are the conditions for such a treatment, but it might be that the pilot sank a few meters with the car before being able to get out (which is incredibly luck if he had suffered a 20 metres fall before hitting the water, he could very well have been knocked out). The first report said that frogmen rescued him, then another one later states that he came out of the car by his own means and was then rescued, on the surface of the water, by the firemen (and then, frogmen took care of the Aston, which makes more sense).
I think it's a bit early to have a clear, detailed view of the event, beyond the press reports. In the next hours / days some more precise facts should come up.

According to Badtaste.it, in fact it seems that the Aston Martin has smashed a barrier on a 20 metres length, then has fallen 8 meters down in the water, where the car sank 55 metres down the Lake.
Dan Frey managed to get out of the car before it hit the water (it's still unclear if he jumped or has been ejected during the fall). Fortunately, he just suffered from a superficial thoracic trauma, and should have been released of the hospital now.

Nota by MkB: then I can't see why the hyperbaric chamber came in the picture?
