It actually looks quite awkward. I suspect it's more of a hovercraft than a plane, since there is no clear wing structure. Although it does look like it could eject from the Tumbler.

EDIT: apparently it will be the Bat-copter.

The fake snow is pretty convincing, but I found it a little jarring to pull back from Joseph Gordon-Levitt all wrapped up amidst the snow to a gaggle of production people decked out in summer wear.

Wonder why they didn't just wait for actual winter (yes, I know; it'd probably be more difficult to get vehicles around in real snow) -- poor Gordon-Levitt must've been sweltering under all that... and I'd hate to see them go the Social Network route with fake CGI breath.

Because there is no guarantee that it will actually snow. The town I live in is nearly a kilometre above sea level, hard up against the Great Dividing Range. The temperature here regularly drops below zero degrees (Celsius, that is; Farenheit, like the Imperial measurement system, makes no sense). We're currently in the tail end of winter, and yet in the six years that I've lived here, it has snowed once. The same thing could happen in Pittsburgh.

And for all we know, they will be shooting in the winter, but because of the sheer amount of footage needed in winter settings, they have to create artificial snow in the summer just to make sure they get it all.

Pittsburgh is 512km from the coast. I'm just 136km, and most of the mountains in the aforementioned mountain range barely qualify as mountains. The point I'm trying to make is that artificial snow is being used in Pittsburgh for a reason. They could easily film in winter, but there is no guarantee that it will snow at all in Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh is 512km from the coast. I'm just 136km, and most of the mountains in the aforementioned mountain range barely qualify as mountains. The point I'm trying to make is that artificial snow is being used in Pittsburgh for a reason. They could easily film in winter, but there is no guarantee that it will snow at all in Pittsburgh.

I suspect all of that is moot, and that it simply comes down to the production schedule and making sure the film has plenty of time to prepare for its release next summer. Not to mention the film contains a number of big actors with other projects to get to.

I'm not so sure it can eject from the Tumbler--it looks too big relative to the size of the Tumbler to be able to do that. That is, unless, Batman has a new "Batmobile" in this film the size of the "Bat-Tank" from Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns".

I suspect parts of it will shift about. When the Batpod ejected from the Tumbler, it took the front two wheels and the central control unit. But most importantly, parts of the Tumbler shifted about during the ejection sequence.

If you look carefully at the Batcopter (I think it needs a new name; the Batmobile was, after all, renamed the Tumbler), the cockpit appears to be lifted directly from the Tumbler itself. And those two turbines look like they could sit behind the front wheels of the Tumbler. I wouldn't be surprised if the bodywork of the Tumbler can shift about to form the fuselage.

It's worth remembering that while we have seen three new Tumblers out and about, they're all new models. The most obvious change is that one of them has what appears to be a rocket launcher mounted on it. But I believe there are other, less obvious changes - like a shorter wheelbase, for one. I think we'll find that they're single-seater models, and can't really be compared to the original Tumbler.

Anyway, there is another video out there by subaruwrxfan that I just can't seem to find right now - but it does tell us a lot more about that's really going on:

The vehicle the batcopter is chasing is a Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (HEMTT), and this particular video shows Jim Gordon on-board. I don't want to say he's cowering, but he's clearly trying to cover himself since he's very exposed. My guess is that the scene goes something like this:

Batman intevenes in a jailbreak that sees the League of Shadows use stolen Tumblers to get Bane out of prison and somehow involves Selina Kyle. During the ensuring riot, Gordon is captured and placed on the HEMTT by Bane's army. Batman pursues, ejecting the Batcopter from the Tumbler at some point. However, Batman is unable to rescue Gordon, who is taken to the football field. Bane uses some kind of localised ground-penetrating explosive device to destroy the field, appeals to the citizens of Gotham to "take control of their lives", and then presents Jim Gordon as his hostage. Bane breaks Gordon's back, leading to the scene in the hospital from the trailer.

As for Bane's cause, I suspect he will play up to the ending of THE DARK KNIGHT: Gordon was happy to stand by and let Batman clean up the streets, but then the Joker rose up, Harvey Dent was "murdered", and suddenly Gordon couldn't control Batman anymore. And then when the public called for Batman to be caught, Gordon did not try too hard to capture them. I think Bane will lay Gotham's problems at Gordon's feet and possibly present himself as a new dark knight as a part of a scheme by the League of Shadows to destroy Gotham from the inside out.

Most of what you said sounds plausible, but I believe it was confirmed somewhere that the hostage Bane brings out at the football game is not Gordon.

I've heard both versions. Mostly from extras at the football scene. Some claim it's Gordon, some claim it's the inventor of the bomb Bane has brought out. But nobody seems to know for sure because nobody could see or hear the figure clearly.

I'm trying to avoid going too heavily into the spoilers (so I appreciate you guys keeping them blocked) but I do enjoy seeing some of the photos of things that don't spoil the movie, like the character costumes and the Batwing. I'm sure this will be great.

Looks like Batman is raining down hell from the aerial vehicle. Not killing, but stopping the army dead in their tracks - taking them out of the chase. And the picture of Hardy with the ticket was after the shoot. An extra in the crowd who came along for the day won a car. Lucky chap.

Looks like Nolan is going all James Cameron for this flick. THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, if nothing else, is certainly going to be the most epic film in the trilogy.

Ain't It Cool News is reporting this is the new Batcave:









It's the Salina Turda, a salt mine in Transylvania. It's known that Nolan was location scouting in the country, and these photos were shown before, though a lot of people believed they might be Bane's prison and not the Batcave.

Very convenient for Marion Cotillard, then; she was just on The Daily Show promoting Contagion, so the location was probably meant to accomodate press junkets she's doing for the film.

Oddly enough, though, TDKR wasn't even mentioned in the interview; damned if I know why.
